    Description: We present an evaluation of systematic effects associated with a continuously rotating, ambient-temperature half-wave plate (HWP) based on two seasons of data from the Atacama B-Mode Search (ABS) experiment located in the Atacama Desert of Chile. The ABS experiment is a microwave telescope sensitive at 145 GHz. Here we present our in-field evaluation of celestial (Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) plus galactic foreground) temperature-to-polarization leakage. We decompose the leakage into scalar, dipole, and quadrupole leakage terms. We report a scalar leakage of ∼0.01%, consistent with model expectations and an order of magnitude smaller than other CMB experiments have been reported.     Description: Filamentous phage f1 exits its Escherichia coli host without killing the bacterial cell. It has been proposed that f1 is secreted through the outer membrane via a phage-encoded channel protein, pIV. A functional pIV mutant was isolated that allowed E. coli to grow on large maltodextrins and rendered E. coli sensitive to large hydrophilic antibiotics that normally do not penetrate the outer membrane. In planar lipid bilayers, both mutant and wild-type pIV formed highly conductive channels with similar permeability characteristics but different gating properties: the probability of the wild-type channel being open was much less than that of the mutant channel.     Description: Observations of individual virions in live cells have led to the characterization of their attachment, entry and intracellular transport. However, the assembly of individual virions has never been observed in real time. Insights into this process have come primarily from biochemical analyses of populations of virions or from microscopic studies of fixed infected cells. Thus, some assembly properties, such as kinetics and location, are either unknown or controversial. Here we describe quantitatively the genesis of individual virions in real time, from initiation of assembly to budding and release. We studied fluorescently tagged derivatives of Gag, the major structural component of HIV-1-which is sufficient to drive the assembly of virus-like particles-with the use of fluorescence resonance energy transfer, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching and total-internal-reflection fluorescent microscopy in living cells. Virions appeared individually at the plasma membrane, their assembly rate accelerated as Gag protein accumulated in cells, and typically 5-6 min was required to complete the assembly of a single virion.     Description: Fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma (FL-HCC) is a rare liver tumor affecting adolescents and young adults with no history of primary liver disease or cirrhosis. We identified a chimeric transcript that is expressed in FL-HCC but not in adjacent normal liver and that arises as the result of a ~400-kilobase deletion on chromosome 19. The chimeric RNA is predicted to code for a protein containing the amino-terminal domain of DNAJB1, a homolog of the molecular chaperone DNAJ, fused in frame with PRKACA, the catalytic domain of protein kinase A. Immunoprecipitation and Western blot analyses confirmed that the chimeric protein is expressed in tumor tissue, and a cell culture assay indicated that it retains kinase activity.     Notes: The recent economic turmoil in Asia has led to a wider recognition of the importance of corporate transparency and disclosures in financial dealings. The objective of this study is to provide comprehensive and up-to-date evidence of current practice and perceived effectiveness of corporate disclosure of listed companies in an emerging economy—Hong Kong. The study compares the perceptions of chief financial officers (CFOs) and financial analysts about a variety of information flow, disclosure and capital market efficiency issues. It also seeks to determine whether there is a perceived need for increased financial reporting regulations and to what extent this and other alternative means might improve market functioning. While both subject groups believed that a majority of firms only adopt a conservative one-way disclosure strategy and the existence of a communication gap, analysts perceived a much higher need than CFOs for increased financial reporting regulations. Neither group thought that enhancing disclosure requirements alone would suffice to close this gap. Instead, they suggested an improvement in the quality of the communication and disclosure processes through means such as choosing more appropriate communication media, formulating a more proactive disclosure strategy, enhancing investor relationship, and voluntarily reporting more information desired by users.

    Notes: Aluminum and nickel contact metallizations have been investigated on polycrystalline, randomly oriented diamond films of varying dopant concentrations. Hall measurements have been used to characterize the diamond films to indicate good control of dopant incorporation with carrier mobility comparable with those of the highest reported in similar films. Rectifying characteristics have been observed for both Al and Ni contacts provided the sheet resistance of the films is greater than 1200 Ω/sq. The thermal stability of these contacts have been investigated to 400 °C and Al diodes have been found to be electrically stable to such treatments. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A depletion-mode metal-insulator-semiconductor field-effect transistor has been fabricated from thin film polycrystalline diamond with a p-type (boron doped) channel and an insulating diamond gate. This device has been successfully operated at 300 °C displaying pinch off when in depletion and high levels of channel current modulation in enhancement. A transconductance value of 174 μS/mm has been measured, the highest reported value to date for this type of device. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Planar metal–diamond–metal photoconductive devices have been fabricated from free standing large grain (20–30 μm) polycrystalline thin film diamond. An interdigitated electrode design with spacings of 20 μm was used to produce effective UV photodetecting devices at bias values in the range 0.1–10 V. A methane-air treatment has been used to modify the structures such that unprecedented performance characteristics have been recorded (106 higher response to 200 nm than visible wavelengths, 〈0.1 nA dark currents); spectral features similar to those observed in natural diamond crystals have been observed indicating that the treatment used led to near ideal electronic characteristics from polycrystalline material. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
