    Description: In a RF produced magnetized argon plasma expanding into a larger expansion chamber, electrostatic modes propagating azimuthally in the direction of the electron diamagnetic drift and frequency greater than the ion cyclotron frequency are observed. In the radial direction, the mode amplitude peaks at a location where the radial density gradient is maximum. The modes are detected at axial locations up to 16 cm away from the entrance aperture. For fixed values of the neutral pressure and magnetic field, the mode frequency is found to be independent of the location at which it is measured. The modes exhibit drift wave characteristics revealing a radial structure with the azimuthal mode number m  = 1 at the lower radial locations ( r  ∼ 3.0 cm) while the m  = 2 mode is located in the outer region. Theoretical modeling using a local dispersion relation based on the fluid equations predicts destabilization of the modes with frequency greater than the ion-cyclotron frequency by electron-neutral collisions and exhibiting other drift wave features.

    Description: We report the results of sun-photometric measurements of Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) in India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) over the Arabian Sea along with synchronous Ocean Color Monitor (OCM-II) derived AOT estimates during December 12, 2009–January 10, 2010. Relatively higher values of Angstrom exponent (α) around 1.2 near coast and 0.2–0.8 in the India’s EEZ, observed during the cruise period, indicate the presence of smaller particles near the coast due to anthropogenic activities; and larger particles in the India’s EEZ due to advection of pollutants from Indian subcontinent via long-range transport. Results related to α and its derivative reveal four different aerosol types (urban-industrial, desert-dust, clean-marine, and mixed-type) with varying fraction during the study period. Surface radiative forcing due to aerosols is found to be 20 W/m2 over India’s EEZ. OCM-derived AOTs showed good corroboration with in situ measurements with a correlation coefficient of about 0.95. A reasonably good correlation was also observed between AOT and wind speed (R = 0.6); AOT and relative humidity (R = 0.58). The concurrent MODIS AOT data also agree well with those observed by the OCEANSAT (OCM-II) satellite during the campaign period.

    Description: ABSTRACT Role of the cloud parameterization scheme and critical relative humidity (RHcrit) for large-scale precipitation is examined for simulating Indian summer monsoon (ISM) by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) climate forecast system version 2 (CFSv2). The major biases of the model simulations namely dry bias over the major continents, cold tropospheric temperature (TT) bias and cold sea surface temperature (SST) bias are related to biases in distribution of clouds. This study evaluates the role of variable RHcrit to get better simulation of high level clouds and reduce TT bias and cloud microphysical parameterization to improve the meridional gradient of TT towards achieving better simulation of south Asian monsoon precipitation. Sensitivity experiments of CFSv2 with the modified RHcrit and cloud microphysical scheme compared to the control simulation show that while the RHcrit leads to some development of the cloud distribution and contributes to some progress of the dry bias over India, the cloud microphysics changes lead to a significant improvement of the cloud simulations. Particularly, revised cloud microphysics scheme coupled with modified RHcrit results in a much improved global distribution of cloud fraction with zonal mean cloud fraction being close to observation. This leads to significant improvement in the meridional gradient of TT leading to rainfall over south Asian monsoon region. The dry bias is not only reduced over the Indian subcontinent but also over other regions of global tropics such as the central Africa and the northern South America. The annual cycle of all India rainfall is in good agreement with observation not only in amount but also in the onset and withdrawal phases. Thus, modifications in the cloud microphysical parameterization scheme in CFSv2 have played a vital role in simulation of the ISM in particular. The sensitivity experiments demonstrate the betterment of the mean monsoon and may lead to help improve monsoon forecasts.

    Description: This paper reports the first observational results of aerosol characteristics over Pune, India (an AERONET site), using CIMEL Sun-sky radiometer. Here 5 years of observational data have been analyzed. The aerosol loading, in terms of the aerosol type and optical depth, undergoes strong seasonal variation over Pune with coarse-mode aerosols dominating during premonsoon season while fine-mode anthropogenic pollution particles result in boundary layer haze during postmonsoon and winter months. The daily mean AOD440 at this location ranged between 0.10 and 1.12, with the most frequently occurring value in the range 0.45–0.55. The overall mean for the 5 year period is 0.49, with a day-to-day variability of about 36.7%. The annual average of CWV over the region shows a fluctuating trend with a marginal increase in the last 2 years. CWV shows strong annual cycle with two maxima, one in the postmonsoon and the other in the premonsoon season. Ångström exponent (α) varies in the range 0.3–1.7, with large seasonal variability. The spectral variation of SSA has been found to be large during the postmonsoon season as compared to that in the other seasons. Real n(λ) and imaginary k(λ) parts of complex refractive index show contrasting spectral behavior during the observational period. The average asymmetry factor (g) representative of the total aerosol layer exhibits a distinct wavelength dependence with g = 0.70 (0.02) at 440 nm and decreasing to 0.64 (0.04) at 1020 nm.

    Description: Mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) and IDH2 are among the most common genetic alterations in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCC), a deadly liver cancer. Mutant IDH proteins in IHCC and other malignancies acquire an abnormal enzymatic activity allowing them to convert alpha-ketoglutarate (alphaKG) to 2-hydroxyglutarate (2HG), which inhibits the activity of multiple alphaKG-dependent dioxygenases, and results in alterations in cell differentiation, survival, and extracellular matrix maturation. However, the molecular pathways by which IDH mutations lead to tumour formation remain unclear. Here we show that mutant IDH blocks liver progenitor cells from undergoing hepatocyte differentiation through the production of 2HG and suppression of HNF-4alpha, a master regulator of hepatocyte identity and quiescence. Correspondingly, genetically engineered mouse models expressing mutant IDH in the adult liver show an aberrant response to hepatic injury, characterized by HNF-4alpha silencing, impaired hepatocyte differentiation, and markedly elevated levels of cell proliferation. Moreover, IDH and Kras mutations, genetic alterations that co-exist in a subset of human IHCCs, cooperate to drive the expansion of liver progenitor cells, development of premalignant biliary lesions, and progression to metastatic IHCC.
