    Notes: ZnO films were synthesized on GaAs substrates at different growth conditions by pulse laser deposition. High-purity (99.999%) oxygen was used as the ambient gas. The pressure of the ambient oxygen gas for ZnO film growth was varied from 20 to 50 mTorr, and the growth temperature from 300 to 450 °C. ZnO films showed very strong bound exciton peaks located between 3.37 and 3.35 eV. The full width at half maximum of the bound exciton peak is less than 5 meV. These results indicate ZnO films on GaAs substrates can be used for optical devices such as light-emitting diodes. The other significant properties of textured ZnO films on GaAs substrates are described. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of surface passivation of undoped p-CdTe(100) by (NH4)2Sx treatment was investigated by using photoluminescence (PL), photoconductivity (PC), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). After sulfur treatment for 2 min, the acceptor bound exciton (A0, X) peak increases greatly in the PL spectrum, and the minority-carrier lifetime of CdTe becomes the longest value in the PC measurement. The XPS spectrum for untreated CdTe shows the additional peaks on the right side of two main Te peaks corresponding to the Te 3d core levels, and these additional peaks are related to TeO3 with binding energies of 576.2 and 586.5 eV. After sulfur treatment, while the intensities of the Te 3d core levels decreased gradually, those of the TeO3 peaks disappear. In addition, the S 2p core-level spectra for sulfur-treated CdTe show the peaks at the 161.7 and 162.8 eV, which are attributed to a CdS formation at the surface of CdTe. These results indicate the sulfur effectively dissociates the native oxides from and neutralizes the dangling bonds at the surface of CdTe. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract In order to increase the wettability between carbon fiber and aluminum matrix, pure nickel was applied as coating on carbon fiber. And scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the microstructure of the coating, fiber and matrix. The tensile tests of carbon fiber and aluminum matrix were done to examine how the behavior of nickel layers with variation of applied pressure make an effect on the mechanical properties of composites. As the applied pressure increases, nickel layers were resolved into the aluminum matrix and ultimate tensile strength of the composite decreased. This was due to premature fracture of the reaction layer acting as a surface notch.

    Notes: A two-stage fed-batch process was designed to enhance erythritol productivity by the mutant strain of Candida magnoliae. The first stage (or growth stage) was performed in the fed-batch mode where the growth medium was fed when the pH of the culture broth dropped below 4.5. The second stage (or production stage) was started with addition of glucose powder into the culture broth when the cell mass reached about 75 g dry cell weight l−1. When the initial glucose concentration was adjusted to 400 g l−1 in the production stage, 2.8 g l−1 h−1 of overall erythritol productivity and 41% of erythritol conversion yield were achieved, which represented a fivefold increase in erythritol productivity compared with the simple batch fermentation process. A high glucose concentration in the production phase resulted in formation of organic acids including citrate and butyrate. An increase in dissolved oxygen level caused formation of gluconic acid instead of citric acid. Journal of Industrial Microbiology & Biotechnology (2000) 25, 100–103.

    Notes: Summary The productivity of continuous ethanol fermentation has been increased using fixed bed reactors where a high density of yeast cells was maintained on a packing of wood chips. Two different systems have been used: 1. A tubular reactor which produced alcohol solutions containing up to 13.5% (V/V) ethanol. High CO2 retention and a poor mass transfer between bulk medium and immobilized biomass prevented production rates higher than 2.2 g/l·h. 2. A multistage reactor where a better utilisation of the reactor volume led to improved performances. Solutions containing 132 g/l of ethanol (16.5% V/V) were produced with a productivity increased up to 4.8 g/l·h. A better distribution of the active biomass and a lower gradient of alcohol concentration between support and bulk medium are possible reasons for this improvement.

    Notes: Xylitol, a functional sweetener, was produced from xylose using Candida tropicalisATCC 13803. A two-substrate fermentation was designed in order to increase xylitol yield and volumetric productivity. Glucose was used initially for cell growth followed by conversion of xylose to xylitol without cell growth and by-product formation after complete depletion of glucose. High glucose concentrations increased volumetric productivity by reducing conversion time due to high cell mass, but also led to production of ethanol, which, in turn, inhibited cell growth and xylitol production. Computer simulation was undertaken to optimize an initial glucose concentration using kinetic equations describing rates of cell growth and xylose bioconversion as a function of ethanol concentration. Kinetic constants involved in the equations were estimated from the experimental results. Glucose at 32 g L−1 was estimated to be an optimum initial glucose concentration with a final xylose concentration of 86 g L−1 and a volumetric productivity of 5.15 g-xylitol L−1 h−1. The two-substrate fermentation was performed under optimum conditions to verify the computer simulation results. The experimental results were in good agreement with the predicted values of simulation with a xylitol yield of 0.81 g-xylitol g-xylose−1 and a volumetric productivity of 5.06 g-xylitol L−1 h−1.
