Notes: [Auszug] Paper-chromatography of water-soluble dyes is quite well known3. A large number of solvent systems have been devised for their separation. Generally these contain large amounts of water. In our experience thin layers of silica gel often flake off the glass supporting plate with solvent systems ...

Notes: [Auszug] Work from these laboratories1 has shown that oral dosage of tartrazine leads to the excretion of sulphanilic acid in urine. In contrast, parenteral doses result in the quantitative excretion of unchanged dye. Tartrazine is not excreted in bile2 and we therefore concluded that this dye was not ...

Notes: The desire to eliminate experimental artifacts due to the correlation of several independent time-resolved experiments has provided the impetus to attempt to perform several simultaneous experimental techniques on a single sample. The data acquisition system of an existing small angle x-ray scattering beam line has been adapted in order to accommodate the simultaneous operation of a second detector system in order to collect the wide angle x-ray scattering pattern. Electronic pulses received and/or generated by the data acquisition system enable control and communication with PC's controlling the sample environment. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: [Auszug] Fig. 1 The ethyl ester of tartrazine (lc, R1 = COOC2H5, i?a = H) and l-(p-sulphophenyl)-3-methyl-4-(p-sul-phophenylazo-)-5-pyrazolone (Id, R1 = CH3, R2 = H) were prepared by standard methods2 and isolated as their disodium salts. Dichlorotartrazine (le, R1 = COONa, R% Cl) was similarly prepared, ...

Notes: A differential scanning calorimeter with a temperature range of 77 to 873 K has been developed for use in combination with either time-resolved X-ray scattering or high-resolution energy-dispersive powder diffraction studies using synchrotron radiation. The first results of successful experiments are briefly described.

Notes: The high X-ray intensity of synchrotron radiation (SR) beamlines makes it possible to perform time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments. The information that can be obtained by collecting the wide-angle diffraction pattern simultaneously not only increases the information content of an experiment but also increases the reliability of the time-correlations between SAXS and WAXS (wide-angle X-ray scattering) patterns. This is a great advantage for experiments with a time resolution below the level of 1 s per frame. With appropriate instrumentation, this is a time domain that is routinely accessible for a large group of research fields. This has had a considerable impact upon the understanding of fundamental aspects of phase transformations. Not only fundamental processes but also more applied fields have benefited from these developments. In polymer research this has led to a situation in which it has become possible to simulate materials processing techniques on-line. With the advent of third-generation synchrotron-radiation sources (e.g. ESRF, APS, Spring8), it has become possible to develop SAXS/WAXS beamlines that will open up new research opportunities by utilizing the higher intensity, the tuneability and the higher collimation offered by these SR sources. However, some of the instrumentation limits in detector and sample environments that have become apparent in research on second-generation synchrotron-radiation sources still have not been appropriately addressed, which means that in some fields it will not be possible to take full advantage of the superior X-ray beam quality that third-generation synchrotrons can offer. A way in which these instrumentation limits can be overcome is discussed, and the instrumentation for a new bending-magnet beamline at the ESRF is used as an example.

Notes: A combination of two independent imaging area-detector systems controlled by a single data-acquisition system, provides a powerful system for X-ray diffraction studies of time-resolved phenomena over a wide q range, in samples with intrinsic or induced structural orientation. With this system we have observed a transient, tensile-stress-induced, orthorhombic-to-monoclinic transition in high-density polyethylene.

Notes: Summary Segmented copolyureas have been formed by RIM using a MDI-based polyisocyanate (RMA400) and mixtures of a polyether triamine (Jeffamine T5000) and diethyltoluene diamine (DETDA) chain extender. Hard segment (HS) content was varied between 35 and 65% w/w at a constant overall stoichiometric ratio of -NCO to -NH2 groups of 1.03. All the copolyureas were translucent and DSC confirmed their totally amorphous structure. The copolyureas were shown by dynamic mechanical-thermal analysis to possess a two-phase morphology comprising polyether soft segments of constant Tgs of −40°C and aromatic polyurea hard segments with TgH increasing from 215 to 236°C as HS content increased. The ratio of flexural moduli at −35 and 65°C, decreased from 4.9 to 2.2 at 65% HS, and mechanical integrity was retained at temperatures in excess of 250°C, with flexural moduli of 10MPa at 270°C. Tensile stress-strain studies showed the polyureas to range from semi-rigid elastomers to stiff plastics with moduli greater than IGPa. Postcuring significantly improves materials toughness at high HS contents.
