    Notes: Abstract Grain boundaries in additive-free ZnO show different types of conductive mode contrast, depending on the electrical properties. Electron beam scattering patterns have been used to determine the misorientation of grain boundaries showing certain types of conductive mode contrast in order to correlate electrical properties with grain-boundary structure. No correlations were apparent using the coincident-site lattice model, but other criteria suggest that grain-boundary electrical properties may be crystallographically controlled. More detailed analysis will require the full determination of the grain-boundary plane.

    Notes: Abstract Disordered α-cristobalite which occurs extensively in bentonites, opals and particularly deep-sea cherts, has been previously interpreted in terms of a unidimensionally disordered structure in which cristobalite is interstratified with two-layer tridymite-like sheets. An alternative interpretation is that the structure is essentially tridymitic but that the sheets are stacked with random transverse displacement normal to the c axis, an arrangement similar to the translational, turbostratic stacking postulated for smectites. This interpretation was arrived at after a comparitive study of a silica phase in an Italian bentonite and a deep-sea chert, material which yielded an X-ray powder pattern almost identical with that of disordered α-cristobalite, but electron diffraction patterns and infrared spectra more consistent with tridymite. It is suggested that this type of silica, which has been described almost universally as cristobalite, is more appropriately referred to as disordered α-tridymite.

    Notes: Abstract The mineral macaulayite, which is thought to consist of layers equivalent to two hematite unit cells flanked by silicate sheets, has been investigated in the temperature range 4.2K–650K by Mössbauer spectroscopy. At low temperatures there is a close resemblance between the spectra of macaulayite and that of hematite in its weakly ferrimagnetic state. At higher temperatures, however, the spectra of macaulayite show two distinct magnetically-ordered components corresponding to surface and bulk iron in the hematite units. Superparamagnetism is observed in the spectra resulting from the microcrystalline nature of the sample. The Néel temperature of macaulayite is measured by extrapolation to be T N=750 ± 20K, substantially below that of hematite (T N=950K), even when the effect of possible aluminium substitution is taken into account. This reduction in the magnetic ordering temperatures is discussed in terms of the proposed layer structure of the mineral.

    Notes: Abstract High-resolution aluminum-27 and silicon-29 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of natural and synthetic imogolites and allophanes obtained using high-field“magic-angle” sample-spinning (MASS) techniques indicate that the imogolite and protoimogolite components of allophanes are characterized by sharp (≈3 ppm) silicon-29 resonances at −78±1 ppm from tetramethylsilane (in accord with Barron et al. 1982), and quite narrow (≈10 ppm at 11.7 Tesla) aluminum-27 resonances, at 5.2±1 ppm from Al(H2O) 6 3+ (in accord with Wilson et al. 1984). However, the spectra of natural allophanes usually contain significant intensity arising from a less well defined material, characterized by a broad (≈20 ppm) silicon-29 resonance centered at −90±2 ppm from tetramethylsilane, and a second relatively narrow (≈15 ppm at 11.7 Tesla) aluminum-27 resonance at 58.5±2 ppm from Al(H2O) 6 3+ . Similar characteristic spectral features are exhibited by a synthetic amorphous Si:Al (1:1) gel, and presumably indicate the presence of framework aluminosilicate materials in the gel, and in most allophanes.

    Notes: Abstract The remote electron beam induced current technique has been used to form resistive contrast images of the resistive barriers developed in 80°C thermistor materials. Linescans extracted from the images have been used to calculate the temperature variation of resistivity of selected interfaces within the material. It is seen that the major resistive changes are associated with only a few of the grain boundaries in this material.
