    Notizen: Abstract. Spatial interaction (SI) is the process whereby entities at different points in physical space make contacts, demand/supply decisions or locational choices. The entities can be individuals or firms and the choices can include housing, jobs, production quantities, exports, imports, face-to-face contacts, schools, retail centres and activity centres. The first SI models can be grouped under the generic heading gravity models. Their main characteristic is that they model the behaviour of demand or supply segments, rather than that of individuals and firms. This article traces the development of these models from their inception in the early part of the twentieth century to the present. The key advances include the replacement of the gravity analogy by the more general concepts of entropy or information theory, a statistical framework commonly used in physics. With the arrival of the regional science paradigm over 50 years ago, a key challenge has been to broaden these models compared to those arising in spatial economics, thus arriving at a more inclusive probabilistic framework. These efforts are discussed here, as well as inclusion of geographical advances, embracing activities as generators of travel, time-geography, recognition of spatial interdependencies, and use of neuro-computing principles.

    Notizen: Abstract. This situation has been identified in the literature as the ‘self potential’ problem. In this article, integration over continuous space within the origin-destination zones is applied to not only compute the intrazonal flows more accurately, but also to evaluate the interzonal flows along shortest path routes meeting the interzonal links at efficient intermediate points. In particular, this general approach permits more accurate corrections to the conventional model, allowing, for instance, the usual approximations in determining average trip length to contiguous zones to be overcome. The eventual aim is to develop practical ‘rules of thumb’ for correcting the conventional analysis. This article also examines facility choice via alternative round trip routes, attempting to discern the influence of ‘intervening opportunities’ on the potential for multi-stop trips without having to fully identify the actual trip chain. Such intervening opportunities can only be properly considered along the alternative paths of the actual network.

    Notizen: Abstract For many bulk commodities, such as mineral ores, crude oil, building materials and food grains, the suppliers are increasingly in the position of being price-takers. This means that, in the short run, their main decisions relate to spatial choice of markets and setting of production levels within the currently available capacity. In this paper, an entropy maximisation framework is introduced to handle dispersion about the profit-maximising choice of markets and production levels by the suppliers. The model also uses information theory to implicitly account for certain rigidities in trading relationships resulting from non-price factors. Although demand functions must be provided exogenously, cost functions can be inferred from regional vintage production data, which in turn allow profit functions to be defined for each producing region or country. A unique and stable dispersed price equilibrium of the Walrasian type is established for this spatial system under quite general conditions.

    Notizen: Abstract In modelling trade competition for final products within a sector, the assumption of product homogeneity is often quite unrealistic. Even where the demand for different versions of the product can be attributed to relatively independent submarkets, considerable heterogeneity may still exist within each submarket. For each submarket, such as that for a medium-priced family car, it is assumed that more product heterogeneity exists between countries or regions than within them. Heterogeneity between regions is related to the existence of importers, acting as intermediate agents, who make trade-offs between cif import prices of goods and the willingness-to-pay by consumers. Aggregate spatial supply and demand functions based on plausible distributional assumptions are presented and estimated using a unified theoretical basis for each regional grouping of producers, importers and consumers. Conditions for simultaneous equilibrium for these three sets of agents are established, and illustrated via a small numerical example.

    Notizen: Abstract Interregional and international trade models have conventionally used an abstract exchange mechanism to generate the linkages between exogenous supply and demand functions defined in each region (country). This approach is compared with a procedure where spatial non-separable supply or demand functions for the agents who pay the transport costs are derived endogenously and the exchange mechanism eliminated. In both cases, trade is generated through direct bilateral contracts between buyers and sellers. However, differentiated finished goods are often traded with the active intervention of intermediaries, acting as both buyers and sellers. In such cases, an actual exchange mechanism is introduced to represent the price responsive behaviour of the exchange agents. The structures of the alternative models are compared with regard to their equilibrium properties and potential policy applications, for both mill pricing and uniform delivered pricing.

In interregional analysis, supply models are based typically on defined sets of ‘representative firms’ with given ‘averaged’ technological and cost coefficients, such that, when aggregated as identical units into both sectors and regions, they reproduce the total output of each sector in each region. Then, deterministic models obtain profit-maximising patterns of input demands and corresponding output, prior to aggregating these quantities as if the firms were truly identical and homogeneous. In this paper, the above optimisation models are replaced by a probabilistic framework, which nevertheless guarantees convergence to the above classical deterministic solutions in the limit. The models are estimated on ‘observed’ flows, technological coefficients and prices, and a CES function (optionally) handles substitution between primary factors. These new input-output models become explicitly price-responsive, allowing tâtonnement with spatial models of final demand.

    Notizen: Abstract Most recent attempts to improve the empirical performance of classical trade models by formulation of probabilistic models of the DSPE (Dispersed Spatial Price Equilibrium) type have concentrated on determination of flows of a single commodity. However, a further challenge is to develop consistent probabilistic multi-sector spatial input demand functions and the corresponding spatial supply functions as part of an eventual probabilistic spatial CGE (Computable General Equilibrium) framework. In this paper, we derive short-run aggregate spatial input demand functions as the generators of the spatial supply functions, introducing via entropy some distributional assumptions about the average behaviour of the ‘representative firm’. In order to remain compatible with entropy principles, all demand functions are derived in a form guaranteeing compliance with a probabilistic accounting framework, calibrated on observed quantities, costs and prices. Firstly, the paper develops dispersed spatial input demand functions using various classical production functions, such as Linear and CES, accounting for the transport costs and tariffs incurred by the supply of intermediate inputs. It then formulates dispersed interregional input demand functions based on multiregional input-output production functions, transcending the normal relations connecting input and output via constant coefficients, with solution via a price-sensitive iterative adjustment technique. Finally, guidelines for an extension to a long-run analysis are sketched.

    Notizen: Abstract. In this paper a random matching model is elaborated to characterize bilateral interregional human face-to-face contacts. The bilateral contacts can be realized only when both parties agree to meet each other. Thus, mutual agreement is the core of our contact modeling. Spatial distribution of bilateral contacts can be described as the results of random matching by potential meeting partners. The failure in agreement of meeting is the major source of inefficiency in human contacts among regions. The paper provides a random matching scheme to describe the generation mechanism of inter-regional human contacts. The paper concludes by illustrating some numerical examples showing how changes in transportation costs can modify the inter-regional interactability in terms of the face-to-face contacts.
