Notes: Apparent specific volumes of two, previously well-characterized, polystyrene fractions were determined at 25° in solvents offering an interesting display of polymer/solvent interactions. Adaptations of differential pycnometry techniques permitted a sensitive detection of the small density differences between solvents and solutions, allowing four significant figures in the apparent specific volumes at concentrations as low as 0.20%. The measurements unambiguously confirm the solvent and concentration dependencies. The solvent dependency at high dilutions also confirms the anomaly that the extremes in polymer/solvent interactions causing very good and very poor polymer solubility yield higher values for the partial specific volumes of polystyrene than obtained for the intermediate range of interactions. The concentration dependency permits indirect approximations of the functions, ΔH̄1 and ΔH̄2 vs. poIymer concentration. The deviations from athermal mixing are greater and more irregular than anticipated, and are shown frequently to complicate both experimental and theoretical studies of the properties of dilute solutions. The thermodynamic behavior of dilute solutions of polystyrene in butanone appears to be particularly complex.

Notes: An attempt is made to outline the mechanisms of “anomalous” vapor diffusions in films of organic glasses. The predominant factor appears to be the diffusion medium's need to relax stresses generated by the osmotic swelling. Diffusion-induced localization of swelling and drying can create severe compressive and tensile film stresses which promote irreversible changes in film properties. Retardations and accelerations of vapor transport can result from these stresses and strains. The very irregular film swelling and vapor absorption kinetics of the system, phenol Novolac resin-water, are reported. These reflect both the rapid and slow mechanical response of the relatively brittle, low polymeric films. Isotropic surface microfracture obtained under selective conditions of initial drying are described. The circumstances of this fracture characterize an interesting example of a vapor diffusion-controlled “crazing.” Although a full understanding of the total behavior is not yet available, the general findings offer a fusion in perspectives of vapor diffusion and tensile fracture in organic glasses.

Notes: The slow growth and recovery of tensile microfractures in films of organic glasses create an apparent tensile creep-enhancement of the coefficient of penetrant diffusion. These effects, although of a greater magnitude, are strikingly similar to those found by McAfee with Pyrex glass. This situation encourages the notion of progressive submicrofracture in inorganic glasses. The advent of increased porosity under tension suggests a role of localized vapor absorption in the environmental-stress crazing and in the “anomalous” vapor diffusion in organic glasses. It becomes increasingly apparent that progressive breakdown is a critical consideration in the mechanical behavior of viscoelastic solids.

Notes: Automatic recordings of the rates of sorption and desorption of gases are obtained by measurement of the volume of the ambient gas under conditions of constant pressure and temperature. The apparatus, which approaches microgram sensitivity, is applicable in the field of diffusion of vapors in polymeric solids (and in obtaining the permeability coefficient). It is especially suited for rapid detection of rate changes and provides operational conveniences for extended measurements. Although exhibiting an over-sensitivity at low pressures, the apparatus does not share the load-sensitivity limitations of quartz spiral techniques. As a detector of the kinetics of gas evolution or consumption, the apparatus shows promise of application in other fields of research as well.
