    Notes: The benefits and advantages that robots bring to the grinding and polishing of complex and awkward shaped components is reviewed. They are illustrated with examples from industries as varied as automotive and medical engineering. In the first of these, laminated glass windows for armed vehicles are ground on their periphery with a robot-manipulated grinding tool with high productivity and low part damage. In another, the technology to grind water tap bodies developed in Sweden is transferred to a South Korean company to improve output and quality. Finally, in the grinding of artificial knee joints, robots are shown to deliver the necessary levels of accuracy and surface finish as well as the production rates for one orthopaedic implant manufacturer.

    Notes: British toolmakers are not renowned for their investment in advanced manufacturing technology. In spite of this mould and die maker, Fletcher & Hamilton has taken the ultimate step and installed the first robotic EDM cell in the UK at its Cheltenham plant. This new facility was introduced following a BIMBO that has transformed the company into a profitable operation specialising in the manufacture of moulding tools for the caps/enclosures, medical and pharmaceutical industries. The philosophy surrounding this transformation is described together with the set-up and operation of the EDM cell.

    Notes: A report of exhibits at the Robot and Automation Show held at the NEC, Birmingham at the time of the 25th ISR. It highlights some of the new developments and products on show, leading with the description of a novel robot tube bender being exhibited for the first time. New products range from a 350kg capacity robot developed by Kuka to a high speed SCARA robot from Epson aimed at PCB odd form component placement applications currently dominated by Cartesian robots. Exhibits of software products emphasised the move to low cost PC-based systems aimed at small robot users and systems integrators without the resources of large IT departments, notably from Deneb and BYG Systems.

    Notes: Reports on the exhibits and exhibitors at Manufacturing Week, which took place at the NEC, 10-12 November 1998. It reveals that machine vision is the major attraction at the show with over a quarter of the exhibitors exhibiting activity in this area. A number of the companies who offer turnkey systems are highlighted; some include vision as an element in their systems while others are totally dedicated to application of the technology. The emphasis in the article is on applications with the predominance being for inspection. Brief case studies are given of inspecting automotive switches, a contact lens line, robot grinding of propellers and a seat belt retractor assembly system. Some new products are also described including a "control free" junction for Bosch twin belt pallet conveyors and compact fast camera with integral image acquisition and processing electronics.

    Notes: Highlights the investment made by Rover for the launch of its new executive car, the Rover 75. Discusses the reasoning behind the building of a completely new factory on the existing Oxford site that has double the output capacity of the one it replaces. It also has a much better quality potential, is very flexible and is designed for minimal environmental impact. Particular attention is given in the article to the new body-in-white facility, which sets new standards in robot automation and in the layout. These enable the plant to provide high productivity with a high degree of flexibility while meeting world-class expectations equal to those of Rover's owners, BMW.

    Notes: An extremely high-pressure jet of water is an efficient method of cutting soft materials, and combining the waterjet process with industrial robots is an economic alternative to the traditional punch tool method of producing complex-shaped components for car interiors, such as floor carpets, headliners and door trims. Applications are given of robotic waterjet systems installed in the USA, France and Iran as well as news of a new cutting box introduced by ABB-IR Waterjet Systems. A further development of the waterjet process is described in which the addition of abrasives enables aluminium castings to be fettled and cleaned.

    Notes: Graham Engineering, a UK company specialising in the manufacture of large complex components for high-tech industries has pioneered the application of 3D laser trimming and welding of stainless steel and other difficult-to-process pressings and fabrications. It uses a Prima Optima 3D laser profiler, one of the largest built by the Italian company, for this work and examples are described from the nuclear, aerospace, domestic heating and telecommunications industries. One of the largest is a nuclear containment vessel manufactured in 6?mm stainless steel, requiring over 18?m of laser welded seams produced in a single pass compared with a root and four capping runs required when TIG welded. Quality and strength are also superior to TIG. Other components produced in the Prima machine include mild steel pressings for an aerospace customer, satellite dishes for a telecommunications company and stainless steel hot water cylinders marketed by Graham Engineering company.

    Notes: A profile of Birkby's Plastics, a UK-based leading European plastic moulding company that has successfully completed a management buy-out. Birkby's supplies to the major automotive OEMs and Tier One manufacturers and to leading business machine OEMs. It is more than a standard trade moulder and has developed a number of innovative processes, such as in-mould welding (IMW) and in-mould textiles (IMT), which significantly reduce cost and improve product quality. IMW enables hollow vessel components to be produced complete within the moulding machine and IMT drastically cuts the time of manufacturing textile-wrapped car trim components. Robotics plays a major role in all of Birkby's operations and together with its process technology is helping the company to compete with low labour cost regions and maintain production in the UK.

    Notes: This paper reviews the Weldex exhibition held at the NEC in Birmingham in November 2003. Highlights of the show included VirtualArc from ABB, which is able to predict weld conditions using physics of the arc, the hybrid MSG-laser welding process from Cloos and a new spot weld-specific Motoman robot. Several manufacturers displayed off-the-shelf "plug and weld" cells including Cloos, Fanuc and Autotech Robotics. Servo controlled guns were also featured by Motoman Robotics and Rexroth Bosch. The latter also promoted its ultrasonic weld monitoring systems that integrate with Rexroth's medium frequency welding systems for high quality assurance spot welding. Finally, a new laser seam tracker from Micro Epsilon is described.

    Notes: Kuka Robotics - Automation celebrated 30 years of operation in the UK and a new name by holding an Open Week at its UK headquarters in Halesowen, at which a diverse range of products and application solutions were exhibited. On show was the RoboCoaster, the "world's first passenger carrying robot" aimed at theme parks and fair grounds, a quartet of co-operating robots, the rapid manufacturing process of surface metal deposition and a robot polishing cell for aerospace cover plates. Two new products from Germany primarily for automotive applications were RoboJig, a flexible robot tooling system for low volume and niche market vehicle components and SmartGrip, a modular "repairable" gripper system for large components such as body sides and underbodies.
