Summary In adult maleSchistocerca, injections of physiological quantities of extracts of corpora cardiaca reduce flight speed. Injections of dipalmitin also reduce flight speed but this effect can be prevented when extracts of corpora cardiaca are injected with this diglyceride. Studies inLocusta have shown that the resting metabolism of the flight musclein vitro is markedly influenced by extracts of corpora cardiaca. Extracts of glandular lobes, or a partially purified extract containing adipokinetic hormone, reduce the respiratory rate of intact dorsal longitudinal flight musclein vitro when trehalose is the only substrate provided. However, these hormonal extracts stimulate the oxidation of dipalmitin. It is maintained thatin vivo, adipokinetic hormone has two major sites of action: fat body lipid is mobilised as diglyceride and the flight muscle is stimulated to utilise lipid in preference to carbohydrate.
