    Notes: Summary The interceluster organization of a two-dimensional colloidal system undergoing diffusion-limited cluster-cluster aggregation is considered. During this process the system evolves into a stationary, scaling state. In this state the organization arises from effective intercluster repulsion due to the mutually exclusive depletion zones surrounding each cluster. It is shown that in the scaling regime the relevant size of the depletion zones is determined by the separation between clusters, rather than the cluster size.

    Notes: Infection of several commercially important potato cultivars with Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) can result in systemic infection with M-type virus, which persists through generations of vegetative propagation, although spraing symptoms in the tubers rarely develop. In field trials of nine such cultivars it was shown that TRV infection can delay plant emergence and retard subsequent growth, reduce tuber yield and mean tuber weight, increase tuber numbers and the proportion of small tubers, increase the incidence of growth cracks and misshapen tubers, diminish dry matter content, and exacerbate after-cooking blackening. Each cultivar was affected differently, showing different combinations and degrees of these effects. Virus concentration in leaf extracts from individual plants was also highly variable. These, and other potato cultivars similarly susceptible to TRV, are grown on large areas of UK and European potato land. The implications of growing such cultivars for the seed, ware and processing sectors of the potato industry are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract An investigation has been made to determine the effects that additions of glue and antimony have on the electrowinning of zinc from acid sulphate solutions. In particular, the zinc crystal growth and cathode current efficiencies were studied in an attempt to establish a correlation between morphology and the nature of the additives. Operating conditions of 55 A ft−2#x002A; and 35°C were used for most of the experiments with electrolyte concentrations of approximately 55 gl−1 zinc and 150 gl−1 H2SO4. Additional runs were made at 40,75 and 100 Aft−2 at 30,40 and 50°C in order to verify certain trends. Primarily by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques, it was possible to categorize deposit morphologies according to the type and concentration of the additives. The general effect of antimony was to refine the grain size and cause the basal plane platelets to lie parallel to the substrate. Glue also caused some refinement, but caused the platelets to become aligned perpendicular to the substrate. Level deposits were obtained in the latter case, which would effectively prevent dendritic growths. A relationship between the relative amounts of glue and antimony in solution and the current efficiency was also obtained.

    Notes: Abstract A virus isolated from diseased tobacco plants growing in Macedonia, northern Greece, had host range and physico-chemical properties typical of a tobravirus. Although it was serologically unrelated to any of the ten tobravirus isolates tested, it reacted in spot hybridization tests with a probe derived from RNA-1 of tobacco rattle virus (TRV) strain SYM. Therefore, the isolate probably represents a previously undescribed serotype of TRV. Male, female and juvenileTrichodorus similis nematodes recovered from the rhizosphere of the diseased tobacco plants transmitted TRV in each of three laboratory experiments. In two of these experiments 50% and 54%, respectively, of the nematodes transmitted virus toPetunia hybrida bait plants, whereas only 18% transmitted virus toNicotiana tabacum plants in a third test. Ultrathin sections of the feeding apparatus of individual nematodes, which had transmitted virus, were examined by electron microscopy. Virus particles were observed, retained as a monolayer in the apices of the oesophageal lumen and as a group of particles within a matrix in the open part of the lumen.

    Notes: Abstract Isolates of the PRN serotype of tobacco rattle virus (TRV) were transmitted with different efficiencies by the nematode vectorParatrichodorus pachydermus. Virus isolates which belonged to other serotypes were not acquired and/or transmitted by this vector, nor were PRN serotype isolates which had been obtained from naturally infected potato plants and maintained by mechanical transmission in the glasshouse for several years. PRN serotype TRV isolates from the Netherlands or from Scotland were equally well transmitted by initially virus-freeP. pachydermus populations from either country. Allowing a naturally viruliferous nematode population access for 3 weeks to uninfected or TRV-infected roots resulted in an increased proportion of the trichodorid population transmitting TRV.

    Notes: Summary Infection with an M-type (particle producing) isolate of tobacco rattle virus (TRV) was detected in leaves and/or roots of some plants from 11 of 13 potato cultivars grown in soil containing viruliferous trichodorid nematodes. Virus was detected in tubers of 8 of 13 cultivars, although only two (Pentland Dell and Maris Bard) developed spraing symptoms. Six cultivars (Arran Consul, Home Guard, King Edward, Romano, Santé and Wilja) were infected with TRV without developing spraing symptoms. Plants grown from virus-containing, symptomless tubers became systemically infected with M-type TRV and produced symptomless infected daughter tubers. Virus was maintained through three generations of vegetative propagation, and the plants were sources for acquisition of the virus by trichodorid nematodes. Distribution of virus in both spraing-affected and symptomless tubers was erratic. Movement of symptomlessly infected seed tubers may be a means of dissemination of the virus and of its introduction to previously unaffected sites.
