    Notes: Abstract This paper presents some recent experimental results on the dynamic snap-through behavior of a clamped, rectangular plate subject to thermal loading and intense acoustic excitation. The likelihood of snap-through oscillations is characterized in terms of boundaries separating regions of snap-through and no snap-through in the parameter space. Two scenarios are considered. First, using tonal inputs, the regions of snap-through are mapped in the sound pressure level—input frequency domain ((SPL, ω) plane). Second, random acoustic inputs are used, and the effect of varying the overall sound pressure level and frequency bandwidth are investigated ((SPL, $$\omega _{center} + \bar \omega $$ ) plane). Several nonlinear characteristics are evident and discussed.

    Description: Practical prediction of structural vibrations due to a turbulent boundary layer currently depends on empirical representations of the unsteady wall pressures. Improvements in these representations would be greatly facilitated if a simple, physically based model were available to test ad hoc assumptions and provide rigorous interpolation of experimental data. A possible candidate is the attached-eddy model, developed from Townsend's initial ideas by Perry and co-workers in the context of turbulence velocity spectra. This approach employs the superposition of contributions from individual eddies, of varying size, to yield its predictions. It is shown here that the same methodology can be applied for wall pressures, once the field due to an eddy has been obtained via solution of the governing Poisson equation. Comparisons with large-eddy simulation and experimental data, spanning a two-decade Reynolds number range, show remarkably good agreement, given the simplicity of the model. It is concluded that this approach has the potential to provide useful physical insight and, subject to its extension to a time-resolved form, improvements to existing empirical formulations.     Description: The Vibration Pattern Imager (VPI) system was designed to control and acquire data from laser vibrometer sensors. The PC computer based system uses a digital signal processing (DSP) board and an analog I/O board to control the sensor and to process the data. The VPI system was originally developed for use with the Ometron VPI Sensor (Ometron Limited, Kelvin House, Worsley Bridge Road, London, SE26 5BX, England), but can be readily adapted to any commercially available sensor which provides an analog output signal and requires analog inputs for control of mirror positioning. VPI's graphical user interface allows the operation of the program to be controlled interactively through keyboard and mouse-selected menu options. The main menu controls all functions for setup, data acquisition, display, file operations, and exiting the program. Two types of data may be acquired with the VPI system: single point or "full field". In the single point mode, time series data is sampled by the A/D converter on the I/O board at a user-defined rate for the selected number of samples. The position of the measuring point, adjusted by mirrors in the sensor, is controlled via a mouse input. In the "full field" mode, the measurement point is moved over a user-selected rectangular area with up to 256 positions in both x and y directions. The time series data is sampled by the A/D converter on the I/O board and converted to a root-mean-square (rms) value by the DSP board. The rms "full field" velocity distribution is then uploaded for display and storage. VPI is written in C language and Texas Instruments' TMS320C30 assembly language for IBM PC series and compatible computers running MS-DOS. The program requires 640K of RAM for execution, and a hard disk with 10Mb or more of disk space is recommended. The program also requires a mouse, a VGA graphics display, a Four Channel analog I/O board (Spectrum Signal Processing, Inc.; Westborough, MA), a break-out box and a Spirit-30 board (Sonitech International, Inc.; Wellesley, MA) which includes a TMS320C30 DSP processor, 256Kb zero wait state SRAM, and a daughter board with 8Mb one wait state DRAM. Please contact COSMIC for additional information on required hardware and software. In order to compile the provided VPI source code, a Microsoft C version 6.0 compiler, a Texas Instruments' TMS320C30 assembly language compiler, and the Spirit 30 run time libraries are required. A math co-processor is highly recommended. A sample MS-DOS executable is provided on the distribution medium. The standard distribution medium for this program is one 5.25 inch 360K MS-DOS format diskette. The contents of the diskettes are compressed using the PKWARE archiving tools. The utility to unarchive the files, PKUNZIP.EXE, is included. VPI was developed in 1991-1992.

    Description: A spectral formulation is employed whereby in-plane stress waves are synthesized from the superposition of components at discrete frequencies and wavenumbers. The summations are performed using the fast Fourier transform and the Fourier series, respectively. Because the components are discrete, the solution to problems (over the entire field) with completely arbitrary loading, both in time and space, is made tractable. Waves generated from a line load acting on an infinite and semiinfinite plane are first considered. A cascade approach is then adopted for the treatment of these waves incident on a free, fixed, and elastic boundary. At each stage, the results are compared with those obtained from the available classical solutions and/or finite element results. These studies will form the basis for the investigation of in-plane stress waves in multiply layered media.

    Description: Data from a sonic fatigue test of a blade-stiffened carbon/carbon panel is analyzed to determine the progression of damage to failure. The reduction in stiffness, as observed from acceleration measurements taken during the test, is correlated with the physical damage. Damage was measured through visual inspection, thermographic measurements, and through the novel use of vibration data collected using a scanning laser vibrometer.

    Description: A matrix methodology similar to that of the finite element method is developed for the analysis of stress waves in layered solids. Because the mass distribution is modeled exactly, the approach gives the exact frequency response of each layer. The fast Fourier transform and Fourier series are used for inversion to the time/space domain. The impact of a structured medium with multiple layers is used to demonstrate the method. Comparison with existing propagator and direct global matrix methods show the present approach to be computationally more efficient.

    Description: An equivalent linearization technique was incorporated into MSC/NASTRAN to predict the nonlinear random response of structures by means of Direct Matrix Abstract Programming (DMAP) modifications and inclusion of the nonlinear differential stiffness module inside the iteration loop. An iterative process was used to determine the rms displacements. Numerical results obtained for validation on simple plates and beams are in good agreement with existing solutions in both the linear and linearized regions. The versatility of the implementation will enable the analyst to determine the nonlinear random responses for complex structures under combined loads. The thermo-acoustic response of a hexagonal thermal protection system panel is used to highlight some of the features of the program.

    Description: A combined theoretical and experimental approach is developed to consider the small amplitude free vibration characteristics of fully clamped panels under the influence of uniform heating. Included in this study are the effects of higher modes, in-plane boundary elasticity, initial imperfections, and post-buckling. Comparisons between theory and experiment reveal excellent agreement.

    Description: As a structural entity of turbulence, hairpin vortices are believed to play a major role in developing and sustaining the turbulence process in the near wall region of turbulent boundary layers and may be regarded as the simplest conceptual model that can account for the essential features of the wall pressure fluctuations. In this work we focus on fully developed typical hairpin vortices and estimate the associated surface pressure distributions and their corresponding spectra. On the basis of the attached eddy model, we develop a representation of the overall surface pressure spectra in terms of the eddy size distribution. Instantaneous wavenumber spectra and spatial correlations are readily derivable from this representation. The model is validated by comparison of predicted wavenumber spectra and cross-correlations with existing emperical models and experimental data.
