Notes: SUMMARY The polymer-metal ion interactions were studied by cyclic voltammetry. These were carried out with poly(acrylic acid)-Cu(II) and poly(vinylsulfonic acid)-Cu(II) systems at different pH. At low pH, the polymer was adsorbed on the electrode surface increasing the irreversibility of the Cu2+/Cu(s) redox system. At pH 2.7, it was possible to demonstrate that the interaction between Cu(II) and poly(vinylsulfonic acid) is basically electrostatic and with poly(acrylic acid) a complex formation also exists.

Notes: Summary The copolymerization of p-chlorophenylmaleimide (1) as electrophilic monomer with 2-methyl-2-oxazoline (2) as nucleophilic monomer without initiator in solution under different experimental conditions was investigated. Copolymers were characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The copolymer composition was determined from 1H-NMR spectra. Molecular weights ranged between 1700 and 5400 g/mol by vapor pressure osmometry.

Notes: SUMMARY The crosslinked poly([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethyl ammonium chloride-co-acrylic acid) was tested as adsorbent for Cd(II), Hg(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Cr(III), and U(VI) by batch equilibrium procedure. At pH 5.0 the adsorbent retained 74% (1.865 meq/g) of U(VI) with a maximum capacity of load of 2.7 meq/g (108 mg/g). The resin-U(VI) equilibrium was achieved around of 1 h which is considered adequate for a heterogeneous reaction. It showed a high selectivity for U(VI) respect to all the other metal ions both from competitive and non-competitive conditions. The recovery of the resin was over 65% by H2SO4 and Na2CO3.

Notes: SUMMARY The synthesis of two copolymers of poly[acrylamide-co-(N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide)] is described. Polymer analogous reactions have been used as well as direct radical polymerization. The two copolymers have been fractionated and ultrafiltered in the presence of Cu2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, and an excess of Na+. It has been found that Na+ ions do not interact with the copolymers. The effect of the different composition of the copolymers is noted in the study of Cu2+ and Pb2+, but there is no difference in the retention profiles obtained for the rest of the metal ions.

Notes: Abstract. The mathematical description of the retention profiles of metal ions by water-soluble polymers using the Liquid-Phase Polymer Based Retention (LPR) technique is discussed for the system poly(acrylic acid)-Ni(II), and poly(acrylic acid)-Co(II). Two experiences have been done under constant and variable conditions. The dissociation constants are calculated from the theoretical expressions of the experimental retention profiles.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Eigenschaften von Poly[1-(2-hydroxyethyl) aziridin] wurden im Hinblick auf die Komplexbildung für die Metalle Co(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Cr(III), Fe(III), Cd(II), Pb(II) und Sr(II) in wäßriger Lösung untersucht.
Notes: The metal complexing properties of poly[1-(2-hydroxyethyl) aziridine] for the metals Co(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Cr(III), Fe(III), Cd(II), Pb(II), and Sr(II) in aqueous phase were investigated. The LPR method is based on the retention of inorganic ions by soluble polymers in a membrane filtration cell and subsequent separation of low-molecular species from the polymer complex formed. The metal interaction with the hydrophilic polymer was determined as a function of pH and filtration factor. According to the interaction pattern obtained, Cu(II) forms the most stable complexes with the polyaziridine within the pH range 3 to 7. At pH 3, it is possible to separate Cu(II) from all other metal ions. Sr(II) is only slightly retained at the pH range investigated. At pH 7, all elements, except Sr(II), did interact with the polymer and were almost quantitatively retained.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Metallkomplexierung von wasserloslichem Poly[1-(2-hydroxyethyl)aziridin-co-2-methyl-2-oxazolin] mit Co(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Cr(III), Fe(III), Cd(II), Pb(II) und Sr(II)-Ionen wurde in wäßriger Phase mit der Methode der Liquid-Phase Polymer-Based Retention (LPR) untersucht.
Notes: The metal complexation of water-soluble poly[1-(2-hydroxyethyl)aziridine-co-2-methyl-2-oxazoline] with Co(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Cr(III), Fe(III), Cd(II), Pb(II), and Sr(II) ions was investigated in aqueous phase using Liquid-Phase Polymer-Based Retention (LPR). The study shows that all metal ions are complexed at pH 5, except Co(II) and Zn(II). In contrast to Sr(II), which showed only a slight interaction over a pH range of 3 to 7, 94% of Co(II) and 88% of Zn(II) were retained at pH 7. At pH 3, only Cu(II) and Cr(III) ions interacted with the copolymer with retention values of 76% for Cu(II) and 52% for Cr(III). Viscosimetric measurements of the copolymer were performed in the presence of metal ions at different pH values.

Notes: A crosslinked poly(ethylene imine), using epichlorohydrin as crosslinker, was prepared and subsequently modified in order to obtain the corresponding N-methylated, N-carboxymethylated and N-phosphonomethylated derivatives. The sorption characteristics of these functionalized resins were studied by a batch equilibration technique, for uptake of Cu(II), Fe(II), Fe(III) and uranyl ions from aqueous solution. Resins with tertiary amine or ammonium groups show negligible sorption for Fe(II), Fe(III) and Cu(II) at pH 1, in contrast with high sorption for U(VI), which is readily eluted with sodium carbonate.
