Notes: The billiard system of Benettin and Strelcyn [Phys. Rev. A 17, 773–785 (1978)] is generalized to a two-parameter family of different shapes. Its boundaries are composed of circular segments. The family includes the integrable limit of a circular boundary, convex boundaries of various shapes with mixed dynamics, stadiums, and a variety of nonconvex boundaries, partially with ergodic behavior. The extent of chaos has been measured in two ways: (i) in terms of phase space volume occupied by the main chaotic band; and (ii) in terms of the Lyapunov exponent of that same region. The results are represented as a kind of phase diagram of chaos. We observe complex regularities, related to the bifurcation scheme of the most prominent resonances. A detailed stability analysis of these resonances up to period six explains most of these features. The phenomenon of breathing chaos [Nonlinearity 3, 45–67 (1990)]—that is, the nonmonotonicity of the amount of chaos as a function of the parameters—observed earlier in a one-parameter study of the gravitational wedge billiard, is part of the picture, giving support to the conjecture that this is a fairly common global scenario. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The stochastic theory of a nonlinear game is presented which incorporates some of the essential properties of living systems: metabolism, reproduction and mutability. The steady state distribution function as well as the complete time development are given explicitly. The second law of thermodynamics is generalized to a certain class of nonequilibrium systems. An order parameter is introduced as a measure of the system's internal organization. From the point of view of phase transition theory, the model exhibits a transition at the absolute zero of temperature, with critical behaviour showing up in the low temperature region.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The orthogneisses of the Spessart crystalline complex are derived from a granitic to granodioritic magma of S-type character which must have formed by anatexis of continental crust. It intruded into a relatively shallow crustal level, 410–420 Ma ago, at the Silurian. Trace element characteristics are consistent with a post-collision geotectonic environment testifying to extensional tectonics at the end of the Caledonian era.

Notes: Abstract The granodiorites and quartz diorites of the Fürstenstein igneous complex (Bayerischer Wald), the diorites of the Spessart crystalline area (including schollen of amphibolite, and schlieren rich in K-feldspar) as well as the diorites and hornblende gabbros of the central Odenwald igneous complex have been compared. 65 rock specimens have been analyzed for the major and minor elements Si, Ti, Al, Fe3+, Fe2+, Mn, Mg, Ca, Na, K, P, as well as for the trace elements Zn, Cu, Ni, Rb, Sr, Zr, Ba, and (semiquantitative) V, and Cr using X-ray spectrometric, flame photometric, titrimetric, and UV-spectrometric methods. 33 additional analyses (major and minor elements only) have been taken from literature. The rock types investigated vary from granodiorite to hornblendite in chemical composition. The averages of the three diorite areas plot near quartz diorite, diorite, and gabbro composition, respectively. This grouping is followed very clearly by the trace element content of Zr, Rb and Ba rather than the other ones. The bearing of the geochemical results on the genesis of dioritic rocks is briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The striking universality of the occurrence of Fibonacci numbers in phyllotaxis is analyzed. Geometric investigation shows that Fibonacci patterns are intimately related to the golden divergence angle along the genetic spiral. A simple argument is presented to make this angle plausible by considering inhibitory action in primary pattern formation. The various types of leaf arrangement are related to the spatial and temporal range of the inhibitory influences.
