Notes: Summary The case histories of some active volcanoes in various parts of the world are analyzed from the standpoint of their being observations of point events in a time continuum. The eruptive histories of the three Japanese volcanoes included show trend in the rate of occurrence of outbreaks. The possible existence of trend in rate of occurrence of events was found for certain Lower Cretaceous bentonites of Wyoming. The data investigated for Etna derive from a period of persistent activity and here also trend in the rate of occurrence of ejections could be identified. The remaining volcanoes studied do not display significant trend in the rate of occurence of outbreaks over the time interval available. Various statistical tests indicate, that although some of the non-trend volcanoes may be fairly closely approximated as regards rate of occurrence of eruptions by the plausible Poisson model, none agree in all respects with the requirements of this process. The patterns of activity of volcanoes found to differ greatly from the Poisson model are complicated kinds of point processes, but owing to the shortness of the series available and their rather unsatisfactory accuracy, it is not possible to be explicit as to their precise nature. In order to elucidate some aspects of the analysis, a simulated series of outbreaks with exponentially distributed intervals between events was produced. The general scheme of analysis adopted has been firstly to test for trend; if trend in the rate of occurrence of events does not occur, the series have been tested for dependence. If there is no dependence between events, tests for agreement with a Poisson model have been carried out, with a negative conclusion leading to a test for agreement with some kind of renewal process. In order to provide a comparison with another type of natural phenomenon of a random nature, the earthquakes occurring in Fennoscandia over the period 1891 to 1950 were analyzed by the same methods. Perhaps surprisingly, the 322 shocks registered during this time (shocks≧3.0 on the Gutenberg-Richter scale) show an indication of trend with a tendency for a decrease in the rate of occurrence of shocks. The eruption pattern of Mauna Loa is thought to be approximately a simple Poisson process. The patterns for Semeru, Bromo and Peak of Ternate seem to be reasonably consistent with a renewal process model, but appear to differ from a Poisson process. The Indonesian volcanoes have several features in common, among these a high coefficient of variation for the times between eruptions. It is tentatively suggested that this may be of some genetic significance. It is possible, that the Indonesian volcanoes erupt in accordance with a pattern approximating to some kind of stationary point process.

Notes: [Auszug] The original material of the parthenogenetic species C. vidua was obtained from Lake Rnningen, Parish of Tby, Uppland, Sweden, on August 7, 1958. Throughout the experiments pH. and redox potential were controlled with a Beckman pH-meter (model N). The investigations were based on the ...

Notes: [Auszug] The close relationships in the floras and in the reptile associations of the Gondwanic continents have long been one of the mainstays of the hypothesis of the existence of Gondwanaland. It seems, however, that little attention has been paid to eventual biological similarities of a later age. The ...

Notes: Abstract A method of plotting data of more than two dimensions is used to analyze a paleobiogeographical problem relating to the lateral movement of continents. The method is suitable for the small samples common in paleontology; it seems to be effective in extracting more information of paleobiological and stratigraphical significance from the data than the usual graphical procedures of multivariate analysis. Brachycythere sapucariensis is a Lower Turonian (Cretaceous) species of ostracod found in the coastal sedimentary basins of Brazil (Sergipe), Gabon, and Nigeria. If the present positions of South America and Africa had been the same in the Cretaceous as today, one would expect the Nigerian and Gabonese individuals to be more alike than either of the African occurrences would be to the Brazilian ones. If, however, the drift interpretation of the origin of the South Atlantic Ocean is correct, Gabonese and Brazilian individuals should be more similar than either of these groups with Nigerian individuals. The results obtained do not disagree with the latter alternative.

Notes: Abstract A method is described for comparing and correlating borehole sequences using information from one or more physical logs recorded from the boreholes. The method is illustrated by a small worked example. Ways are described whereby constraints may be imposed on the comparison to allow the incorporation of relevant information, such as the presence of marker beds in the stratigraphic sequences. An account is given of the comparison of three boreholes in the Lansing Group of Kansas, USA, and there is a short discussion on the effects of filtering, standardizing, and weighting the logs.

Notes: Abstract Data on some living (salamanders and grasshoppers) and fossil (Devonian brachiopods) animals are analyzed by means of recently developed methods for the large-scale treatment of multivariate normality. Multivariate nonnormality was found to exist in all situations, even if the univariate deviations in the skewness and kurtosis statistics proved to be without significance for the most part. The effect of logarithmically transforming the data appears to be a mixed blessing. Apart from the fact that the investigator is removed one step from the biological relationships in his data by carrying out a transformation of them, the betterment in the multivariate interconnections with respect to normality tends to be slight, despite the general improvement in the univariate values. The relationship between sample size and the multivariate normality measures b1,p and b2,p are studied empirically.
