Abstract The solar cycle induces strong periodicity in processes underlying monthly rainfall totals. Seasonally varying parameters of rainfall distributions can be estimated with reasonable reliability from relatively few years of monthly data. The distribution of annual totals or maxima in terms of these varying parameters can thus be used to predict long term annual characteristics from quite short records. Specification of seasonal variation of parameters as a harmonic process simplifies the derivations. Ignoring seasonal variation in the rainfall process leads to incorrect estimates of long-term extreme rainfalls when using traditional methodology.
