Contributions to the Chemistry of Phosphorus, 114. 1,2,3,4,-Tetra-tert-butyl-1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)tetraphosphaneThe reaction of 1,4-dipotassium 1,2,3,4-tetra-tert-butyltetraphosphide, K2[PBut]4, with chlorotrimethylsilane yields the hitherto unknown title compound Me3Si(But)P—[PBut]2—P(But)SiMe3 (1), which is remarkably stable against disproportionation reactions. In solution below -30°C only one of the six possible diastereomers, 1b, (erythro/d,l/erythro), can be detected by 31P NMR spectroscopy. Besides, according to the exchange broadening in the room temperature spectrum, additional isomers exist in very low concentrations. The assignment of the low temperature AA′BB′ spin system to the isomer 1b results from the preferred trans arrangement of neighbouring tert-butyl groups as well as from the extraordinary large 3J(PP) coupling constant, which indicates that the lone electron pairs at the terminal P-atoms are directed towards each other. The configuration and conformation in solution below -30°C has been confirmed by a clear correlation to the structure of crystalline 1.
Notes:
