    Description: Active faults in the upper crust can either slide steadily by aseismic creep, or abruptly causing earthquakes. Creep relaxes the stress and prevents large earthquakes from occurring. Identifying the mechanisms controlling creep, and their evolution with time and depth, represents a major challenge for predicting the behavior of active faults. Based on microstructural studies of rock samples collected from the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (California), we propose that pressure solution creep, a pervasive deformation mechanism, can account for aseismic creep. Experimental data on minerals such as quartz and calcite are used to demonstrate that such creep mechanism can accommodate the documented 20 mm/yr aseismic displacement rate of the San Andreas fault creeping zone. We show how the interaction between fracturing and sealing controls the pressure solution rate, and discuss how such a stress-driven mass transfer process is localized along some segments of the fault.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: To study the relationship between the plasma concentration of stiripentol (STP), a new antiepileptic drug, and its inhibitory effect on the formation of carbamazepine epoxide (CBZE) in epileptic children treated with carbamazepine (CBZ) either alone or in combination with another antiepileptic drug. Methods: Minimum plasma concentration of antiepileptic drugs was measured before initiation of STP therapy (day 0) and on days 28 (STP 60 mg⋅kg−1⋅day−1) and 84 (STP 90 mg⋅kg−1⋅day−1) by HPLC. Results: The CBZE/CBZ plasma concentration ratio decreased exponentially with increasing minimum plasma STP concentration (r = 0.80). The asymptote of the curve allowed the calculation of the minimum plasma STP concentration required to obtain the maximum inhibitory effect, i.e. 6.7 mg⋅l−1. Conclusion: The inhibitory effect of STP on CBZ metabolism expressed as the CBZE/CBZ plasma concentration ratio is dependent on STP plasma concentration, with a maximum effect at an average of 7 mg⋅l−1. The present data suggest that in order to evaluate the anticonvulsant efficacy of STP as add-on therapy, the minimum plasma STP concentration should be maintained above 7 mg⋅l−1 and the dosage of CBZ should simultaneously be decreased in steps by more than 50% to minimize the change in CBZ plasma concentration.

    Notes: Abstract We investigate the potential of a high-energye + e − collider (e.g., CLIC,E e +=E e −=1 TeV) for determining trilinear and quadrilinear vector boson self-interactions in various vector boson scattering processes which can be measured in reactions of the type $$e^ + e^ - \to (e^ + e^ - ,ve^ - ,\bar ve^ + ,v\bar v) + VV'$$ . Our analysis is based upon a recently suggested single parameter Lagrangian model for vector boson self-interactions incorporating globalSU(2) weak isospin symmetry broken by electromagnetism and a minimal increase of vector boson scattering tree amplitudes as a function of the energy. The results are compared with theSU(2) L ×U(1) Y predictions for the cases of a light and a heavy Higgs boson. We find that the crosssection for the production of a vector boson pair,VV′, is very sensitively dependent on the magnitude of the single free parameter, κ, the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of theW ±. The cross-section changes by approximately one order of magnitude, even near production threshold, if κ is varied by one unit around theSU(2) L ×U(1) Y value of κ=1.

    Notes: Abstract We develop a simple and realistic strategy to identify the theoretical origin of aZ′ of massM z′ ≳ 400 GeV if the latter were directly produced at a futuree + e − collider. A measurement of the muonic width and of two ratios of hadronic to muonic widths would lead to an almost complete identification within a very general class of extraU(1) models. Alternative models, though, would be better classified by measuring three longitudinal polarization asymmetries.
