    Notes: Abstract Competitive displacement is the most severe outcome of interspecific competition. For the purposes of this review, we define this type of displacement as the removal of a formerly established species from a habitat as a result of direct or indirect competitive interactions with another species. We reviewed the literature for recent putative cases of competitive displacement among insects and arachnids and assessed the evidence for the role of interspecific competition in these displacements. We found evidence for mechanisms of both exploitation and interference competition operating in these cases of competitive displacement. Many of the cases that we identified involve the operation of more than one competitive mechanism, and many cases were mediated by other noncompetitive factors. Most, but not all, of these displacements occurred between closely related species. In the majority of cases, exotic species displaced native species or previously established exotic species, often in anthropogenically-altered habitats. The cases that we identified have occurred across a broad range of taxa and environments. Therefore we suggest that competitive displacement has the potential to be a widespread phenomenon, and the frequency of these displacement events may increase, given the ever-increasing degree of anthropogenic changes to the environment. A greater awareness of competitive displacement events should lead to more studies documenting the relative importance of key factors and developing hypotheses that explain observed patterns.

    Notes: Abstract We assessed the effects of three photoactivated linear furanocoumarins, secondary plant metabolites present in Apium spp. (Apiaceae) and other taxa, on the larval-pupal parasitoid, Archytas marmoratus (Townsend) (Diptera: Tachinidae) and the host Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), in the presence and absence of ultraviolet radiation. These results then were compared with previously described responses of Archytas marmoratus and other hosts to different plant allelochemicals. Ultraviolet radiation had no consistent detrimental effects. Increasing concentrations of linear furanocoumarins (from 0 to 0.029% of fresh weight) increased mortality of both the host and parasitoid. Increasing linear furanocoumarin levels also prolonged larval development of surviving S. exigua, but had no effect on pupal developmental time or pupal mass. Consequently, there was no effect of increasing linear furanocoumarin levels on surviving parasitoid development time (from the time of host pupation) or size. These results indicate the effects of linear furanocoumarins are mediated through effects on the host. Because reported responses of Ar. marmoratus to other allelochemicals (e.g., flavones, methyl ketones) are mediated through host effects, these results support the hypothesis that Ar. marmoratus displays a generalized response to plant allelochemicals that are predictable based on host mediated effects.

    Notes: Abstract The parasitoidEucelatoria bryani Sabrosky regulates the larval behavior of its hostHelicoverpa zea (Boddie). Parasitized third, fourth and fifth instars burrow into the soil 0.7–3.4 days earlier than unparasitized larvae that normally enter the soil to pupate at the end of the fifth and final larval instar. Parasitized third instars molt once then burrow as fourth instars, one instar earlier than normal. WhenE. bryani pupariated on the soil surface in the field, none survived to the adult stage. However,E. bryani adults emerged from 49.2% of hosts that had burrowed into the soil. By accelerating the timing ofH. zea burrowing behavior and causing host larvae to enter the soil before death,E. bryani ensures its pupariation in an environment with improved protection against natural enemies and lethal temperatures.

(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Longevity of adult femaleE. bryani was not related to body size. In contrast to longevity, largerE. bryani females had greater potential fecundity than smaller females, as determined by the number of embryonated eggs present in the common oviduct. However, female parasitoid size did not affect primary clutch size (number of eggs deposited in a host). Because embryos in eggs located in the ovisac were larger than those located elsewhere in the common oviduct, maximum primary clutch size may be physiologically limited by the number of fully mature eggs a female has available at one time.E. bryani females adjusted primary clutch size in response to host size, for bothH. zea andH. virescens. This adjustment appears to be adaptive because females did not overexploit hosts by depositing more larvae than a host could support. Adult emergence was not related to host size. Although host weight positively influencedE. bryani progeny weight, increases in progeny size with host size were counterbalanced by increases in primary clutch size with host size.

    Notes: Abstract We examined the ovipositional preference and larval development of Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on two common hosts in southern California, Chenopodium murale L. (Chenopodiaceae) and Apium graveolens L. (Umbelliferae) to determine if female oviposition preference is correlated with offspring performance. Greenhouse oviposition choice tests indicated that S. exigua oviposit more frequently on C. murale than on A. graveolens. However under laboratory conditions, larvae reared on C. murale had longer development times, lower relative growth rate, and lower survivorship than larvae reared on A. graveolens. larval and pupal masses were significantly greater on A. graveolens than on C. murale. Furthermore, pupal masses were significantly greater for individuals reared on A. graveolens than on C. murale. Because pupal masses and adult fecundity are positively correlated for Spodoptera spp., the fitness of S. exigua on A. graveolens is likely to be substantially higher than its fitness on C. murale. Despite better larval performance on A. graveolens, previous results from choice tests with whole plants and leaf discs indicate that the highly mobile S. exigua larvae strongly prefer C. murale over A. graveolens. Hypotheses attempting to explain this lack of correlation between larval and adult host preference versus development and survival in this system are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Multiple parasitism of Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) had differential effects on the gregarious endoparasitoids Eucelatoria bryani and E. rubentis (Diptera: Tachinidae). Both species were able to survive in multiparasitized hosts. However while the survival of E. bryani was not affected by the presence of E. rubentis, E. rubentis survival was reduced when competing with 24-h older E. bryani. The presence of E. rubentis did not result in a decrease in the size of E. bryani except when E. rubentis was 24-h older than E. bryani. The presence of E. bryani tended to result in smaller E. rubentis. The presence of similarly aged heterospecific competitors often resulted in prolonged development time for both species. Naïve females did not alter oviposition between unparasitized and heterospecifically parasitized fifth-instar larvae of H. zea, either by ovipositing less frequently in parasitized hosts than unparasitized ones, or by reducing clutch size in parasitized hosts. These results indicate that in H. zea, E. bryani is a superior competitor compared with E. rubentis. These factors should be considered in evaluating the potential of E. bryani and E. rubentis as biological control agents of H. zea.

    Description: Behavioral thermoregulation is a defensive strategy employed by some insects to counter infections by parasites and pathogens. Most reported examples of this type of thermoregulatory response involve behavioral fevering. However depending upon the life history of a host-insect and that of the parasite or pathogen, the host may respond by cold-seeking behavior. Thermoregulation is not only ecologically important; it may affect the success of parasites and pathogens as biological control agents. We examined if Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) thermoregulates in response to infection by Beauveria bassiana, a fungal pathogen commonly used for biological control. Fungal-infected thrips preferentially moved to cooler areas (~12 °C) while healthy thrips sought out warmer temperatures (~24 °C). This cold-seeking behavior suppressed the growth of B. bassiana in infected thrips, and significantly improved survivorship of infected thrips. At 24 °C, males only survived up to 10 d after infection and females up to 20 d after infection, which was substantially poorer survivorship than that of corresponding healthy individuals. However, individuals of both sexes survived up to 48 d after infection at 12 °C, which was a much less severe reduction in survivorship compared with the effect of B. bassiana infection at 24 °C. The proportion of females among progeny from infected thrips at 12 °C was higher than at 24 °C. Therefore, cold-seeking behavior is beneficial to F. occidentalis when infected by B. bassiana, and its effects should be considered in the use of B. bassiana in biological control programs.
