Notes: [Auszug] In the small Ikka Fjord in southwestern Greenland, we have studied remarkable submarine tufa columns forming over alkaline springs by abiotic precipitationof the metastable, cold-water mineral ikaite (CaCO3.6H2O). The columns, which support a rich marine life, are up to 20 ...

Notes: Abstract Sapphirine-bearing rocks occur in three conformable, metre-size lenses in intrusive quartzo-feldspathic orthogneisses in the Curaçà valley of the Archaean Caraiba complex of Brazil. In the lenses there are six different sapphirine-bearing rock types, which have the following phases (each containing phlogopite in addition):A: Sapphirine, orthopyroxene;B: Sapphirine, cordierite, orthopyroxene, spinel;C: Sapphirine, cordierite;D: Sapphirine, cordierite, orthopyroxene, quartz;E: Sapphirine, cordierite, orthopyroxene, sillimanite, quartz;F: Sapphirine, cordierite, K-feldspar, quartz.Neither sapphirine and quartz nor orthopyroxene and sillimanite have been found in contact, however. During mylonitization, introduction of silica into the three quartz-free rocks (which represent relict protolith material) gave rise to the three cordierite and quartz-bearing rocks. Stable parageneses in the more magnesian rocks were sapphirine–orthopyroxene and sapphirine–cordierite. In more iron-rich rocks, sapphirine–cordierite, sapphirine-cordierite–sillimanite, cordierite–sillimanite, sapphirine–cordierite–spinel–magnetite and quartz–cordierite–orthopyroxene were stable. The iron oxide content in sapphirine of the six rocks increases from an average of 2.0 to 10.5 wt % (total Fe as FeO) in the order: C,F–A,D–B,E. With increase in Fe there is an increase in recalculated Fe2O3 in sapphirine. The four rock types associated with the sapphirine-bearing lenses are:I: Orthopyroxene, cordierite, biotite, quartz, feldspar tonalitic to grandioritic gneiss;II: Biotite, quartz, feldspar gneiss;III: Orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, hornblende, plagioclase meta-norite;IV: Biotite, orthopyroxene, quartz, feldspar, garnet, cordierite, sillimanite granulite gneiss. The stable parageneses in type IV are orthopyroxene–cordierite–quartz, garnet–sillimanite–quartz and garnet–cordierite–sillimanite.Geothermobarometry suggests that the associated host rocks equilibrated at 720–750°C and 5.5–6.5 kbar. Petrogenetic grids for the FMASH and FMAFSH (FeO–MgO–Al2O3–Fe2O3–SiO2–H2O) model systems indicate that sapphirine-bearing assemblages without garnet were stabilized by a high Fe3+ content and a high XMg= (Mg/ (Mg+Fe2+)) under these P–T conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Hochdruckeinfluß im gesamten inneren ALPEX-Gebiet am 22.
Notes: Summary High pressure influence in the whole inner-ALPEX area on April 22, 1982 gave an opportunity for the ALPEX scientific task no. 6: “To study the effects of differential radiative heating introduced by the alpine mountain range due to elevation, topographic features and albedo”. Electra flight E-422 with its four-fold north-south, south-north flight tracks was especially devoted to study the diurnal variations of the atmospheric boundary layer and the airflow on both sides of the Alps along the Gotthard cross-section under strong inversion conditions. Using the flight technique of “vertical zigzagging”, a total of 24 vertical soundings have been completed along four traverses. Synoptic rawinsonde and surface data, digital satellite data and microbarograph data are used to examine the thermodynamical aspects of the diurnal development of the alpine heat low. The fine structure of the boundary layer is documented by cross-sectional analysis of the potential temperature, mixing ratio and the three wind components from the 1 Hz aircraft data along the traverses. In addition, 15 aircraft soundings have been selected to evaluate the vertical distribution of the turbulent variances and fluxes on both sides of the Alps. The differences of the structure and temporal evolution of the alpine boundary layer on the north and south side of the Alps, as well as the differences between the alpine boundary layer and the boundary layer over homogeneous terrain are significant and need further discussion.

Notes: [Auszug] This is not astonishing, as Woodward and Yourgrau1 derived the coefficients determining the wavelength dependence of the light deflexion chiefly from the experiments of Sadeh et 7/.6-7. Sadeh et al.6 found a frequency shift of the 21 cm line in Tau A near an occultation by the Sun, which was orders ...
