Description:
Four Mn fractions were determined for profiles of five soils from Alberta and two from Ontario. Data are presented which suggest there is no close correlation between total Mn content of these soils and the absence of gray speck in oats. Leeper's original postulation of quinol-soluble Mn being a good criterion of availability was supported. The results indicate that Mn deficiency in Alberta soils is spotty and widespread, and marked changes in Mn content were observed over short distances even within the same soil type. Distribution of total Mn throughout the various profiles with the exception of the organic profiles followed commonly observed patterns reported by Leeper. The amount of quinol-soluble Mn in the profiles studied varied from 30% to less than 1% of the total Mn.
