Notes: Abstract It has been shown that wear, being a thermofluctuation process, can be described by an equation analogous to Zhurkov's law of simple fracture. In fatigue wear the maximum value of the activation energy u0 is close to the u for the rupture of chemical bonds. Abrasive wear is an almost barrierless process, therefore in the case of mixed wear the presence of an abrasive component sharply reduced u0. The thermoactivation equation describes the effect of temperature on wear only within the limits of one physical state of the polymer. In transition zones it is necessary to take into account the role of the sharp change in elongation at break, which introduces extrema into the temperature wear curve.

Notes: Conclusion A model of multicycle fatigue of polymers based on the hypothesis of self-simulation of the failure process was proposed and a method of predicting the durability was elaborated in the present study. It was found that in low-temperature conditions of self-heating, the crack is the basic cause of fatigue failure. A cyclic durability equation was obtained in the form of a modified time summation criterion for the stressed state in the failure zone in the vicinity of the apex of a fatigue crack. It was shown that in the case of brittle failure in multicycle fatigue, the maximum principal stresses which arise in the failure zone, one order of magnitude smaller than the size of the fatigue crack, are the criterion of failure.

Notes: Abstract The dependence of fatigue life on concentration has been obtained for PVC and polystyrene exposed to the action of acetone solutions. As the mechanical stress increases, the role of the aggressivity of the medium diminishes, and its corrosion activitya tends to a minimum (a=1). When a polymer is exposed to the action of a binary liquid, both of whose components are aggressive, a transition region is observed on the log 1/τ-log C curve. In this region the fracture rate increases sharply.

Notes: Abstract In cyclic loading in the W = const and ε0 = const regimes, as in the σ0 = const regime, both a low-temperature and a high-temperature thermal regime may exist, with an abrupt transition from the former to the latter. The effect of the loading regime on the temperature dependence of the hysteresis temperature rise ΔT, which depends on the elastohysteresis properties of the material, results in the following relationship between the critical temperature rises: ΔT 0 c ≤ΔT W c ≤ΔT ɛ c .

Notes: Abstract It was shown that if the time elapsed to the formation of a neck is taken as the criterion of the time-to-rupture of plastics, the latter property obeys the Aleksandrov-Gurevich equation for the relaxation time corrected for the pole displacement: $$\Theta = \Theta _0 \exp \left( {\frac{{U'_0 - \gamma '\sigma }}{R}} \right)\left( {\frac{1}{T} - \frac{1}{{T_{pol} }}} \right).$$ Constants of this equation for polymethylmethacrylate and polyvinylchloride were determined. The values obtained are substantially different from constants of the Zhurkov equation for time-to-rupture in brittle fracture.

Notes: Abstract It is shown on the basis of the theory of cyclic strain-induced heating of plastics that two forms of fatigue fracture are possible (thermal and mechanical), this being reflected in the fact that the appropriate Wöhler curves consist of two branches. The conditions under which a transition from one form of fracture to another takes place are analyzed, and the theoretical predictions are proved by experiment.
