Notes: Abstract In the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, release of sperm bundles from the testis into the upper vas deferens (UVD) and subsequent transfer of sperm bundles into the seminal vesicles (SV) occurs in a daily rhythm. The UVD undergoes different types of contractions despite the fact that its musculature appears to receive no innervation. Patterns of the UVD movements were recorded throughout the daily sperm release and transfer cycle. In males kept in light-dark cycles, transfer of sperm from the UVD to the SV was accompanied by a characteristic pattern of UVD contractions of high frequency and amplitude. In males kept in constant light, which fail to transfer sperm, this contraction pattern was absent. It is concluded that the vas deferens muscles undergo daily changes in contraction pattern in phase with the light-dark cycle. The increased muscular contractions appear to be a causal factor in the gated sperm transfer from the UVD to the SV.

Notes: Summary Comparison of the total body protein of male and female larvae, pupae, and adults of a diapause and 2 nondiapause strains of the pink bollwormPectinophora gossypiella indicated that the protein content of larvae of the diapause strains was significantly higher than of the non-diapause strain.

Notes: Summary Field tests showed that 3 components of theHeliothis virescens sex pheromone when deployed individually, significantly disrupt pheromone communication of males of this species and ofH. zea. Field and wind tunnel tests indicated that males ofH. zea are attracted to and mate with the females ofH. virescens when the atmosphere is permeated with (Z)-9-tetradecenal or (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-ol. This mating is fatal to both individuals because of morphological incompatbility of their genitalia. Habituation ofH. zea males to these compounds is the most likely reason for this attraction between 2 species that show reproductive isolation in nature.

Notes: Abstract We study the correlation functions of a system of free chiral fermions on a compact Riemann surface using techniques of algebraic geometry. Fay's trisecant identity arises as a consequence of the proof of the uniqueness of correlation functions.

Notes: Abstract We present an analysis of the generalb−c system (including the β−γ system) on a compact Riemann surface of arbitrary genusg≧0 by postulating that its correlation functions should only have the singularities imposed by the operator product expansion (OPE) of the system. Studying a very (in fact optimally) general form of theb−c system, we prove rigorously that the standard practice of eliminating zero modes, and even the standard lagrangian, follow from the analyticity structure dictated by the OPE alone. We extend the analysis to consider the most general case of the presence of twist (e.g. spin) fields. We then determine all the possible correlation functions of theb−c system, with statistics unspecified, compatible with the OPE. On imposing Fermi and Bose statistics, we obtain the correlation functions of the fermionicb−c and β−γ systems, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The tritium-labeled bis-norleucine analog ofHelicoverpa zea pheromone biosynthesis-activating neuropeptide ([3H]NLPBAN) was incubated in vitro with hemolymph fromManduca sexta orH. zea adult females. The incubations resulted in the formation of several tritium-labeled degradation products. At a [3H]NLPBAN concentration of 0.9 μM the degradation proceeded at a very slow but physiologically plausible rate (2–10 fmol/min/μl hemolymph). The primary [3H]NLPBAN degradation reaction inM. sexta hemolymph was not inhibited by 20 μM leupeptin, 0.1 mM amastatin, 1 mM EDTA, 1 mM EGTA, 1 mM 1,10-phenanthroline, or 2 mM 4-(2-aminoethyl)benzenesulfonyl fluoride; but secondary reactions may have been affected, as some of the inhibitors changed the radio-HPLC profile of the degradation products. It is concluded that hemolymph ofM. sexta andH. zea contains peptidase(s) capable of inactivating circulating PBAN.

Notes: Abstract We prove that the correlation functions of a system of chiral fermions on a compact Riemann surface are determined by postulating their behaviour at coincident points and a principle of maximal analyticity. The proof proceeds by a reformulation as a problem of sheaf cohomology. Wick's theorem and the Fay identities are rigorous consequences of our analysis.

Notes: Summary The sorghum shootfly, Atherigona soccata Rond. normally a monophagous pest of Sorghum spp. was observed to lay eggs on maize when intercropped with sorghum. In green-house tests, up to 52% of the total eggs were laid on maize when it was planted 2 days after sorghum in the same hole. However, in field trials no more than 6% of the maize plants received shootfly eggs, compared to 61% of the sorghum plants. There was no difference in rate of hatch of eggs on the two host plants. Larvae fed on both host plants but caused very little damage to maize. First instar larvae could not reach maturity on maize.
