Notes: Summary The relative detection capability of nine seismological stations situated north of 20°N in India has been studied. The best stations were the WWSSN stations NDI and SHL, followed by CHA, DDI, BOK and BHK. The remaining stations CAL, SEH and TOC are inferior in their detection capability.

Notes: Summary A new method of interpreting the gravity and magnetic anomalies is introduced with special reference to the magnetic anomalies of a horizontal cylinder. The method consists of calculating the functions of the anomaly and its distance from an arbitrary point. These form a simple linear equation with coefficients related to the parameters defining the body. Since each observation forms a separate linear equation, the required normal equations are formed by the method of least squares and solved for the coefficients and hence for the various parameters defining the target. The discussion here is confined to the vertical magnetic anomalies. The application of the method to horizontal and total field anomalies of two dimensional bodies is also outlined.

Notes: Summary A common computer program for the interpretation of vertical magnetic anomalies of spheres and horizontal cylinders has been developed. The input consists of the observed anomalies noted against their distances measured from an arbitrary point in the profile and a code number for each model. The program is written so that the positions and magnitudes of the maximum and minimum anomalies are located and their ratios and signs are used to define the initial parameters of the model under consideration. The errors resulting from these approximate values are derived and are solved for the increments to be given to the initial values. The process is repeated until the sum of the squares of the errors is less than 0.25% of the sum of the squares of the observed anomalies. The method has been tested on various theoretical examples and the results justify the validity of the programme.

Notes: Summary A novel method of interpreting gravity and magnetic anomalies is presented here. Two diagrams of master curves, one for gravity and the other for vertical magnetic interpretation are presented. They are useful in calculating the depth of burial and the radius of infinite horizontal cylindrical bodies irrespective of density contrast or strength and direction of magnetisation. This method also enables us to infer the direction of magnetisation, resultant intensity of magnetisation and from them the susceptibility contrast; and density contrast. ThoughHenderson [8]2) reported the applicability of continuations and derivatives in the interpretation of magnetic anomalies for the first time, the authors have treated them in a more exhaustive manner in the present paper to obtain valuable relationships.

Notes: Summary An entirely new procedure is proposed in this paper for interpreting anomalies of dykes. This reduces the ambiguity in magnetic interpretation. Measurements of the first vertical derivative simplifies the problem of interpretation and also supplies additional information concerning the parameters of a dyke. The first vertical derivative profile cuts the distance axis at two points whose separation is related to the depth and direction of magnetisation of a dyke.

Notes: Summary An entirely new procedure for interpreting selfpotential anomalies of spheres, rods and dipping sheets is presented. The anomaly of a sphere is divided into two parts — the anomaly of odd symmetry and the anomaly of even symmetry — from which the depth can be obtained by fitting them with the master curves. The self-potential anomalies of a finite rod are transformed to the anomalies of a veritcal sheet, for which standard curves are presented. The case of a sheet was divided into three parts; (a) finite line of poles; (b) infinite double line of poles and (c) finite double line of poles. For the first case logarithmic curves were prepared and presented; by their comparison with the field profile, different parameters can be obtained. In the second case, a geometrical construction is provided to obtain the various values. In the third case, the anomalies of finite sheet (finite double line of poles) are transformed into those due to an infinite double line of poles for interpretation.

Notes: Summary An easy method of calculating the magnetic anomalies of two-dimensional irregular bodies is presented. The body under consideration is replaced by a set of line doublets with a pole strength equal to the intensity of magnetisation and parallel to its direction. The magnetic effects of some of the equally spaced doublets are obtained, added and multiplied by the distance between them to yield the magnetic anomaly. The expressions involved here are simpler than those existing in geophysical literature.

Notes: Summary Standard charts from which a complete solution of the vertical magnetic anomalies of dipping doublets can be obtained very rapidly are derived and presented. The most important distances to be scaled from the field profile are the distances between the maximum and minimum anomalies, half maximum anomalies and one-third maximum anomalies only. The use of the charts for claculating the various parameters and locating the origin is also incorporated.

Notes: Summary In view of the conspicuous nature of the Koyna earthquake of 10 December, 1967, an attempt has been made in this paper to study the fault plane solution of an aftershock which occurred on 12 December, 1967. The resulting solution is characterized by strike-slip faulting and the inferred direction of slip vectors is consistent with that obtained for the main shock.

Notes: Summary Second derivative coefficients for various grid systems are derived followingPeters' andElkins' approaches. Two simple formulae, one for three dimensional bodies and the other for two dimensional bodies are also suggested. These utilise the average of the anomalies around a single circle and the anomaly at the central point. All the coefficient sets and the proposed simple formulae are applied to gravity fields of spheres and cylinders. Coefficients ofElkins' type derived with a weightage of 1/r 4 to all the circles gave excellent results in both the cases of spheres and cylinders, whereasPeters' coefficients without any weightage to the circles gave reliable results in case of cylinders only. The simple formulae suggested gave more accurate results than any of the above coefficient sets.
