    Notes: Abstract The interpretation of magnetic anomalies of dipping beds with an inclined top is ambiguous. The magnetic anomaly profile over a dipping bed can be produced by a series of beds of different dips and directions of magnetization. Further, these anomalies are equivalent to those of faults and anticlines. Thus, the magnetic anomaly profiles, assumed to be produced by one of the models, can also be produced by the other models. The ambiguity is resolved in case of dipping beds and faults, when the magnetization is caused purely by induction; but the case of anticlinal beds remains ambiguous. The magnetic equivalence of dipping beds, anticlines, and faults makes it possible to apply the available methods of interpretation of fault models to dipping beds and anticlines.

    Notes: Abstract Magnetic anomaly profiles over two thin sheets separated by a small distance resemble those of dykes andvice versa. Interpretation of anomalies over a pair of sheets based on the magnetic properties of dykes predicts a dyke whose centre lies midway between the positions of the sheets. The dyke, on the other hand, is magnetically equivalent to a pair of sheets, both lying at the same depth and having the same magnetization. The magnetic anomalies due to a pair of sheets can be interpreted by framing linear equations between the anomalies and their distances measured from an arbitrary reference. Application of this method to anomalies of dipping sheets with a finite depth extent is indicated.

    Notes: Summary A simple transformation called pseudo-magnetic transformation is introduced in which the horizontal derivatives of the observed gravity anomalies of any body will be calculated. These horizontal derivatives, called the pseudo-magnetic anomalies, are proportional to the vertical magnetic anomalies of the same body assumed to be polarised horizontally. It is shown that the interpretation of gravity anomalies of dykes is not unique except by computing the pseudo-magnetic anomalies, which will be interpreted by the logarithmic curve fitting technique indicated earlier [5]2).

    Notes: Summary An entirely new procedure for interpreting selfpotential anomalies of spheres, rods and dipping sheets is presented. The anomaly of a sphere is divided into two parts — the anomaly of odd symmetry and the anomaly of even symmetry — from which the depth can be obtained by fitting them with the master curves. The self-potential anomalies of a finite rod are transformed to the anomalies of a veritcal sheet, for which standard curves are presented. The case of a sheet was divided into three parts; (a) finite line of poles; (b) infinite double line of poles and (c) finite double line of poles. For the first case logarithmic curves were prepared and presented; by their comparison with the field profile, different parameters can be obtained. In the second case, a geometrical construction is provided to obtain the various values. In the third case, the anomalies of finite sheet (finite double line of poles) are transformed into those due to an infinite double line of poles for interpretation.

    Notes: Summary A method called the zero-line method for interpreting the total field magnetic anomalies of spherical bodies is described. The contour of zero-anomaly is controlled by a linear equation of the typeAx 2 +By 2 +Cxy +Dx +Ey +F = 0, where the coefficientsA toF are related to the depth of the sphere and the parameters relating to its position and magnetisation. From the coordinates (x, y) of the various points lying on the zero-contour, five normal equations for the above equation are set and solved for the various coefficients. The various parameters relating to the position and magnetisation of the sphere are then determined from these coefficients. It is expected that similar methods can be developed for interpreting magnetic anomalies of other three dimensional bodies also.

    Notes: Summary Second derivative coefficients for various grid systems are derived followingPeters' andElkins' approaches. Two simple formulae, one for three dimensional bodies and the other for two dimensional bodies are also suggested. These utilise the average of the anomalies around a single circle and the anomaly at the central point. All the coefficient sets and the proposed simple formulae are applied to gravity fields of spheres and cylinders. Coefficients ofElkins' type derived with a weightage of 1/r 4 to all the circles gave excellent results in both the cases of spheres and cylinders, whereasPeters' coefficients without any weightage to the circles gave reliable results in case of cylinders only. The simple formulae suggested gave more accurate results than any of the above coefficient sets.

    Notes: Summary The possibility of utilising the results of remaeent magnetism of sub-surface bodies, as obtained from the magnetic surveys, for the study of continental drift is presented. As an example, the quartz-magnetite bands occurring at Ongole, Andhra Pradesh, India have been magnetically surveyed. A modified method for the interpretation of magnetic anomalies of infinite dykes has been presented and is used for the interpretation of field profiles. A remanent magnetic vector with an up dip of 26° lying exactly in the present magnetic meridian has been obtained, which yields the ancient latitude of India (Reference Town being Nagpur) to be 9°S of equator at an age of 1400 million years.
