    Description: A new methodology, based on Bayesian age modelling, is presented for the analysis of palaeoflood geochronologies and palaeodischarge data. Bayesian age models were developed, using the Oxcal radiocarbon calibration software, for the geochronologies of three palaeoflood sites in Spain, namely the Gaudalentín, Tagus and Llobregat rivers in SE, Central and NE Spain, respectively. The age–depth plots resulting from the applied Sequence models enabled the construction of flood magnitude-frequency plots through substitution of the original stratigraphic depth data with the associated minimum discharge quantified by hydraulic modelling. The age models presented demonstrate that a Bayesian approach for analyzing Holocene flood magnitude and frequency prevents the loss of geomorphic and hydrologic information inherent in radiocarbon frequency methods previously used in the analysis of palaeoflood data sets. Frequency approaches do not allow proper consideration of flood magnitude information and only incorporate those geomorphic units specifically dated. The Bayesian age models calculate modeled ages for undated units as well, so that all the individual flood events identified in the field can be incorporated and visualized in the data output. The palaeoflood age models therefore illustrate: (1) the age range for clusters of palaeoflood events; (2) the number of events within each flood cluster, with an age estimate and palaeodischarge value for each event; and (3) the potential impact of discharge censoring on the record, for example the role of accommodation space infilling on the quantification of palaeodischarge. The methodology and results are briefly discussed within the wider context of fluvial palaeohydrology, in particular: (1) the role of Bayesian modelling in future fluvial palaeohydrology research; and (2) the value of bedrock gorge sites for investigating past flood–climate relationships, given the problems of deciphering allogenic and autogenic drivers in alluvial sedimentary records.

    Description: The functions of many open reading frames (ORFs) identified in genome-sequencing projects are unknown. New, whole-genome approaches are required to systematically determine their function. A total of 6925 Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains were constructed, by a high-throughput strategy, each with a precise deletion of one of 2026 ORFs (more than one-third of the ORFs in the genome). Of the deleted ORFs, 17 percent were essential for viability in rich medium. The phenotypes of more than 500 deletion strains were assayed in parallel.     Notes: Recent studies have reported the association of a pro-inflammatory profile of genetic polymorphisms in IL-1B, IL-1RN, TNF-A, and IL-10 genes with an increased risk of non-cardia gastric cancer. Because gastric cancer and duodenal ulcer are mutually exclusive outcomes of Helicobacter pylori infection, we aimed to investigate possible allelic variant associations of several functional polymorphisms in the IL-1B, IL-1RN, TNFA, and LTA genes in the susceptibility to duodenal ulcer. Genomic DNA from 118 patients with duodenal ulcer and 97 healthy controls was typed for the IL-1B polymorphisms at positions −511, −31, and +3954, the VNTR polymorphism in intron 2 of the IL-1RN gene, the TNFA−308, TNFA −238, and the NcoI and BsI LTA polymorphisms by PCR, SSCP and TaqMan assays. H. pylori infection and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) use was investigated in patients and controls. Logistic regression analysis identified H. pylori infection (OR: 12.86; 95%CI: 3.85–43), NSAID use (OR: 11.95; 95%CI: 4.19–34.05), and family history-ulcer (OR: 3.79; 95%CI: 1.68–8.54) as independent risk factors for duodenal ulcer. When the effect of the combinations of IL-1 and TNF genotypes was studied we found that the distribution of all possible combinations of these eight polymorphisms was similar in duodenal ulcer patients and controls. The simultaneous carriage of alleles IL-1RN*2/IL-1B −31T/IL-1B −511C/IL-IB +3954C/TNF-HaplotypeE negative (termed in some studies as ‘low-producing’ alleles) was increased in H. pylori-positive duodenal ulcer patients compared to H. pylori-infected healthy controls (10.5% vs. 5.9%) although the difference did not reach statistical significance (OR: 1.85; 95%CI: 0.57–5.99, P = 0.41). Moreover, no differences were found with respect to H. pylori status, NSAID use, age, gender, smoking habit, type of complication, recurrence of the ulcer, and need for surgical treatment. Our data show no association between allelic variants of IL-1 and TNF gene polymorphisms in the susceptibility to and final outcome of duodenal ulcer.

    Notes: The phase space structure of a generic Hamiltonian model, describing the vibrational dynamics of the LiNC/LiCN molecular system, is studied using a frequency analysis method. The results obtained for the regular region constitute a true parametrization of the corresponding invariant tori on which the trajectories are located. By performing the frequency analysis locally, much richer information about chaotic trajectories is obtained, since it clearly reveals the dynamical characteristics of trajectory fragments hidden behind the t→∞ ergodic property. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A classical-quantum correspondence study of a saddle-node bifurcation in a realistic molecular system is presented. The relevant classical structures (periodic orbits and manifolds) and its origin are examined in detail. The most important conclusion of this study is that, below the bifurcation point, there exists an infinite sequence of precursor orbits, which mimic for a significant period of time the (future) saddle-node orbits. These structures have a profound influence in the quantum mechanics of the molecule and several vibrational wave functions of the system present a strong localization along the saddle-node periodic orbits. A striking result is that this scarring effect also takes place well below the bifurcation energy, which constitutes a manifestation of the so-called "ghost'' orbits in configuration and phase space. This localization effect has been further investigated using wave packet dynamics. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: By constructing continuation/bifurcation diagrams of families of periodic orbits of LiNC/LiCN system the spectroscopy and dynamics for this species are deduced and compared with accurate quantum mechanical calculations up to 13 000 cm−1. The interesting phenomenon of the appearance of gaps in the continuation diagram of the principal family that corresponds to the bend motion is shown to occur in both isomers, LiNC and LiCN. Through semiclassical quantization a one to one correspondence of specific periodic orbits to certain eigenstates is demonstrated. One interesting example is the case of periodic orbits that are generated from a saddle-node bifurcation and describe rotations of the Li+ ion around the CN− fragment. The correspondence of these periodic orbits to regular rotating type eigenfunctions is shown, thus, demonstrating in a clear way the importance of the saddle-node bifurcations in locating localized wavefunctions in highly energized molecules. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
