Description: Late Miocene fossils from the Lukeino Formation in Kenya's Tugen Hills are assigned to Orrorin tugenensis. Of 20 fossils recovered there to date, 3 are proximal femurs. One of these, BAR 1002'00, preserves an intact head connected to the proximal shaft by an elongated neck. Although this fossil is comparable in size to Pan troglodytes, computerized tomography scans of the neck-shaft junction of BAR 1002'00 reveal that the cortex is markedly thinner superiorly than inferiorly, differing from the approximately equal cortical thicknesses observed in extant African apes, approaching the condition in later hominids, and indicating that O. tugenensis was bipedal.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Galik, K -- Senut, B -- Pickford, M -- Gommery, D -- Treil, J -- Kuperavage, A J -- Eckhardt, R B -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2004 Sep 3;305(5689):1450-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Orthopedic Biomechanics Laboratory, Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA 15212, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15353798" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: [Auszug] SIR-Previous morphological analyses using hennigian cladistic approaches had suggested that Lake Victoria's approximately 200 species of haplochromine cichlid fishes had a polyphyletic origin'. Despite marked morphological diversity, Lake Victoria's cichlid fish flock may be monophyletic and ...

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the establishment and expansion of the Yerkes Chimpanzee Colony over its first half-century of existence. Particular attention is given to the patterns of matings in the population and resultant distribution and levels of inbreeding. Over the period encompassed by this investigation the population mean inbreeding coefficient is 0.0045; the mean inbreeding coefficient for all inbred sibships (20 out of 264) is 0.0990. The mean inbreeding coefficient for all chimpanzees born in the colony is 0.0079, and the highest inbreeding coefficient for any individual is 0.125.

Notes: Abstract The results of a morphometric study on the mid-facial region in a collection of 278Pan troglodytes verus skulls are reported. Upwardly divergent nasal bones were found in 35 of the 124 specimens (28.2%) in which this feature could be analyzed. Appreciable separation (1 cm. or more) between nasion and glabella characterized 13 of the 154 skulls (8.4%) in which both these osteometric points could be observed. These findings document the wide ranges of variation that are normally to be found in modest-sized population samples of hominoid primates, and point to the inherent unreliability of cladistic analyses based on the hypothesis that hominoid primate taxa are monomorphic for these character states in the nasal region.

Notes: Abstract This paper reports the results from a study of enamel hypoplasia in the deciduous dentition of free-living Liberian chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus). The entire study collection includes 280 specimens (278 skulls plus two unassociated mandibles), of which 70 are young enough to retain some decidous teeth. Among the subsample of infants, the total frequency of hypoplasia summed over all teeth in any individual reaches 80%, being expressed in the form of pits rather than transverse lines. Hypoplasia of a linear form was common in the permanent dentition, attaining a frequency of 46.7% on maxillary central incisors and 69.7% on mandibular canines.
