Notes: [Auszug] Further support for this interpretation has now been obtained by the recovery, within a single diploid nucleus, of the reciprocal products of mitotic crossing-over. The technique used was based on recombination between alloles making use of the well-known position effect3 usually shown by allelic ...

Notes: [Auszug] Changes in thymine concentration in the growth medium affect the chromosome replication time of thymineless cells. This alone may account for changes in cell composition and provide a demonstration of the absence of coupling between replication velocity and growth ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE objective of these two volumes, in the words of the editors, is to provide for the first time a comprehensive treatment of the molecular and cellular biology of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi-murium that would be a logical first resource for anyone seeking information about these ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR,?It may be true that neither this country nor the whole western world will be overcrowded in the foreseeable future. It may also be true that further efforts to reduce the birth rate might (if this country were a closed system) have serious economic consequences. But we are surrounded by an ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR,-The comments (15 February, page 509) by a committee of the Royal Society on the recent published statement of the Genetic Manipulation Advisory Group will be widely welcomed and supported. However, I should like to comment on one of the suggestions they make. It is argued that there is an ...

Notes: [Auszug] The fragment of DNA coding for ?-lactamase (the Ap fragment) used in our study was obtained from an amplifiable ColEl-Ap plasmid (pLGl) which was constructed by in vivo ligation of the Ap fragment (4.5 megadaltons) of the plasmid pSC122 (ref. 1) with Col El DNA which had been cleaved at its single ...

Notes: [Auszug] THIS book contains a brief account of the discoveries and discoverers that made DNA splicing exploitable as a method of amplifying genes and creat-ing new hybrids. It also contains a blow by blow account of the rise and fall of the conviction, and the public debate it led to, that the synthesis of ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR,?Since our veracity, objectivity and judgment have been called in question in a letter signed by Professor Pentz (April 8, page 479), which contests the criticism which we made of the genetics course now offered by the Open University, we hope you will allow us to put the record straight. Much ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR,The article by Professor Steven Rose on the new genetics course offered to Open University students (Nature, 259, 437; 1976) is misleading. Notes: Summary A new type of mutant of mutant of Escherichia coli that synthesises thymidine phosphorylase constitutively has been isolated and characterised. The mutation leading to constitutivity is located to the left of the gene specifying deoxyriboaldolase. The mutation is cis dominant in its effect on thymidine phosphorylase activity and therefore believed to be a mutation of the operator-constitutive type. The specific activity of purine nucleoside phosphorylase is not affected by the mutation indicating that the gene specifying this enzyme is located in a different operon from that containing the genes specifying thymidine phosphorylase and deoxyriboaldolase.
