Notes: Abstract The coagulation of positively charged sol of hydrous ferric oxide of different average particle sizes for potassium sulphate as the coagulant has been studied in the presence of ethyl alcohol, acetone and gelatin. It has been observed that these sensitise the sol and the degree of sensitisation increases with the fineness of dispersed particles. It has been concluded that the adhesive tendency of the surface of dispersed particles increases in the presence of said non-electrolytes leading to an increase in the frequency of collisions resulting in sensitisation. The stability ratioW decreases in the presence of said non-electrolytes for the same amount of coagulant.

Notes: Summary The adsorption of coagulating ion Ba++ has been determined for the negatively charged sol of hydrous manganese dioxide during its coagulation as affected by barium nitrate in presence of various non electrolytes. The adsorption of stabilising ion OH− has, however, been measured for a precipitate of hydrous manganese dioxide in presence of ethyl alcohol, acetone, glucose, urea, and gelatin. The adsorption of both the ions decreases in presence of ethyl alcohol and acetone whilst increase is observed with the rest. It has been concluded that it is not possible to correlate the change in adsorption of either the coagulating or stabilising ion with sensitisation or stabilisation.

Notes: Abstract The coagulation of negatively charged sol of hydrous manganese dioxide has been studied at three temperatures for Potassium nitrate and Barium nitrate as the coagulating electrolytes both in the absence and in the presence of non-electrolytes. It has been concluded that for stabilisation, the non-electrolyte affects the surface of the dispersed particles such that the cohesive forces are diminished and the value of the energy of activation increases; the reverse is, however, true for sensitisation.

Notes: Summary The coagulation of hydrous ferric oxide sol of varying average particle size has been studied in presence of gelatin for potassium sulphate as the coagulant. The effect of temperature and pH of gelatin solution has been noted. It has been concluded that the surface forces are modified in the presence of gelatin causing sensitisation.

Notes: Summary The coagulation of positively charged sol of hydrous ferric oxide of different average particle sizes by potassium nitrate has been studied. Sensitisation has been observed for ethyl alcohol, acetone and gelatin whilst stabilisation occurs for glucose and urea. The extent of sensitisation decreases with the progress of time whilst the reverse happens in stabilisation. The degree of sensitisation or stabilisation increases with the fineness of dispersed particles. It has been concluded that the adhesive tendency of the surface of dispersed particles is modified in the presence of nonelectrolytes.

Notes: Abstract The adsorption of stabilising ion H+ has been determined for a precipitate of hydrous ferric oxide and that of SO4″ for the positively charged sol of hydrous ferric oxide during its coagulation as affected by potassium sulphate in presence of various non-electrolytes. The adsorption of both the stabilising and coagulating ions decreases in presence of ethyl alcohol and acetone, an increase is, however, observed in presence of glucose and urea. With gelatin at lower concentration the adsorption of both H+ and SO4″ decreases whilst the reverse is noticed at higher concentrations. It is concluded that the cutting down of the adsorption of either the stabilising or the coagulating ion cannot explain sensitisation or stabilisation.

Notes: Abstract The Cr3+-Cr6+ equilibrium was studied in lithium and sodium aluminoborate melts in an air atmosphere at different temperatures. A mechanism of the Cr3+-Cr6+ redox reaction in glass melts has been suggested. Enthalpy and entropy of the reaction in molten borates were calculated and the results thus obtained have been discussed thermodynamically.
