Summary An almost complete analysis of a vinyl asbestos tile can be carried out in about 4.5 h by extracting a ground sample with diethyl ether at room temperature for 5 min, followed by an acid digestion which determines the amount of limestone filler present. The treated sample is then heated in a thermobalance and the vinyl resin content determined from a reproducible step that occurs on the thermogravimetric (T.G.) curve. The total organic material remaining in the sample can also be determined from the same T.G. curve. Analysis by infrared spectroscopy of the combustion gases released during thermal decomposition indicates clearly the type of vinyl resin present in the tiles.

Zusammenfassung Eine fast vollständige Analyse von Vinyl-Asbest-Bodenbelag kann innerhalb von 4,5 h durchgeführt werden, indem man eine gemahlene Probe mit Diäthyläther 5 min bei Zimmertemperatur extrahiert, eine Säurebehandlung zur Bestimmung des Kalk-Füllmaterials anschließt und die so behandelte Probe in einer Thermowaage erhitzt. Den Vinylgehalt bestimmt man aus einer reproduzierbaren Stufe der thermogravimetrischen Kurve, aus der man ebenfalls den Gesamtgehalt an organischer Substanz entnehmen kann. Eine IR-Analyse der Verbrennungsgase gibt Auskunft über die Art des vorhandenen Vinylharzes.
