    Description: Relict sand wedges are ubiquitous in southern Patagonia. At six sites we conducted detailed investigations of stratigraphy, soils, and wedge frequency and characteristics. Some sections contain four or more buried horizons with casts. The cryogenic features are dominantly relict sand wedges with an average depth, maximum apparent width, minimum apparent width, and H/W of 78, 39, 3.8, and 2.9 cm, respectively. The host materials are fine-textured (silt loam, silty clay loam, clay loam) till and the infillings are aeolian sand. The soils are primarily Calciargidic Argixerolls that bear a legacy of climate change. Whereas the sand wedges formed during very cold (-4 to -8 °C or colder) and dry (ca. 〈=100 mm precipitation/yr) glacial periods, petrocalcic horizons from calcium carbonate contributed by dustfall formed during warmer (7 °C or warmer) and moister (〉= 250 mm/yr) interglacial periods. The paleo-argillic (Bt) horizons reflect unusually moist interglacial events where the mean annual precipitation may have been 400 mm/yr. Permafrost was nearly continuous in southern Patagonia during the Illinoian glacial stage (ca. 200 ka), the early to mid-Pleistocene (ca. 800-500 ka), and on two occasions during the early Pleistocene (ca. 1.0-1.1 Ma).

    Notes: Abstract. This paper addresses the problem of grasping and manipulating three-dimensional objects with a reconfigurable gripper that consists of two parallel plates whose distance can be adjusted by a computer-controlled actuator. The bottom plate is a bare plane, and the top plate carries a rectangular grid of actuated pins that can translate in discrete increments under computer control. We propose to use this gripper to immobilize objects through frictionless contacts with three of the pins and the bottom plate, and to manipulate an object within a grasp by planning the sequence of pin configurations that will bring this object to a desired position and orientation. A detailed analysis of the problem geometry in configuration space is used to devise simple and efficient algorithms for grasp and manipulation planning. The proposed approach has been implemented and preliminary simulation experiments are discussed.

    Notes: A nitrogen balance study, comparing a low-cost soy-oats infant formula with and without supplemental methionine, was carried out with infants of ages 3 - 26 months at a single equivalent level of nitrogen intake (approximately 850 mg/kg/day). Nitrogen retention was found to be unaffected by methionine supplementation. Com- parison of data obtained in this study with previous research re- vealed that a critical value for intake of total L-sulfur amino acids apparently exists in infants 3 - 26 months of age, below which methionine supplementation will increase nitrogen retention, but above which it will not. This value appears to coincide with that of 49 mg/kg/day recommended for infants by the FNB.

    Notes: A low cost powdered infant formula made from soybeans, oats and sucrose, fortified with methionine, vitamins and minerals, has been developed. A dry process for making the formula, which employs a low-cost Brady extruder, has also been developed. The resulting product is of good microbiological quality and disperses readily in water to give a milk-like suspension of satisfactory stability to settling. The essential amino acid pattern of the formula, its PER and NPU values, nitrogen balance data with infants, proximal chemical analysis, calorie distribution and low level of trypsin inhibitor indicate it to be adequate for feeding infants 3 months or older. Clinical trials with infants also showed that the formula was well accepted and tolerated, and produced adequate weight gain. Retail prices of the product, packed in cans and polyethylene bags, are appreciably lower than those of comparable cow's milk and other soya-based infant formulas available in the market. The product is currently being manufactured and sold in several parts of Mexico.

    Notes: Cottonseed/soybean blends (50/50) were ground in an Alpine pin mill with or without previous cooking in a Brady low-cost extruder. Free gossypol decreased with increasing amount of water added prior to extrusion and number of passes through the extruder. Available lysine increased with decreasing amount of added water but was unaffected by number of passes through the extruder. Type of soybean raw material utilized had no effect on free gossypol. Blends prepared from defatted cottonseed meal, however, had lower free gossypol than those made from cottonseed kernels. A blend similar to full-fat soy flour but of lower cost was prepared from unextruded 50% defatted cotton-seed meal/50% extruded soybean flakes, without added water, and ground in the Alpine mill.

    Notes: Abstract The heterobasidiomycetes responsible for plant smuts obligatorily require their hosts for the completion of the sexual cycle. Accordingly, the sexual cycle of these fungi could so far be studied only by infecting host plants. We have now induced Ustilago maydis, the causative agent of corn smut, to traverse the whole life cycle by growing mixtures of mating-compatible strains of the fungus on a porous membrane placed on top of embryogenic cell cultures of its host Zea mays. Under these conditions, mating, karyogamy and meiosis take place, and the fungus induces differentiation of the plant cells. These results suggest that embryogenic maize cells produce diffusible compounds needed for completion of the sexual cycle of U. maydis, as the plant does for the pathogen during infection.

    Notes: Abstract Mature embryos of Amaranthus hypochondriacus (amaranth) were used to develop an in vitro culture system for plant regeneration and genetic transformation. Plants were regenerated from embryo-derived callus cultivated on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 10 µM 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid or 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid and 10% coconut liquid endosperm. Transgenic plants were obtained by inoculation of mature embryo explants with a disarmed Agrobacterium strain containing the plasmid pGV2260(pEsc4), which carried the genes encoding neomycin phosphotransferase type II and β-glucuronidase. The presence of transgenes in the genome of transformed amaranth plants and their progeny was demonstrated by Southern blot hybridization. Tissue specific and light-inducible expression directed by a pea chlorophyll a/b-binding protein promoter was observed in transgenic amaranth plants and their progeny.
