Notes: Six low-frequency eigenmodes of a double-paddle oscillator have been measured and have been identified with a finite-element model. The internal friction Q−1 of these modes has been measured in the range of 4–80 K. Only one of the oscillator's modes has a Q−1〈3×10−8 below 40 K, which is furthermore very reproducible. All other modes have a higher internal friction which is not as reproducible and also sometimes changes after thermal cycling. It is shown that the internal friction of the different modes is related to the restoring force needed to hold the oscillator in place. The finite-element model is used to predict the damping of the different modes. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report measurements of the solid-solid thermal boundary resistance Rbd, spanning the temperature range from 1 to 300 K. Below 30 K, Rbd is found to be in agreement with the prediction of the acoustic mismatch model. The influence of diffuse scattering at the interface is found to have a very minor influence on Rbd. Above 30 K, Rbd decreases less rapidly with increasing temperature than predicted by the theory. Phonon scattering in thin (∼30 A(ring)) disordered layers near the interface is shown to be a possible explanation. Implications for heat removal from integrated circuits are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The thermal conductivity of KBr crystals containing known concentrations of KNO2 is studied at low temperatures. The conductivity of the doped crystals is greatly reduced and can be described with a simple relaxation time using the model of the thermal conductivity proposed byDebye. Crystals of KBr containing small concentrations of KI show a decrease in thermal conductivity very similar to that observed in mixed crystals with KCl as host lattice. This observation supports the model proposed byWagner that quasi localized modes act as phonon scatterers.

Notes: Abstract We have measured the internal friction and speed of sound in several polycrystalline alloys, using compound torsional oscillators at frequencies between 60 kHz and 100 kHz and temperatures between 50 mK and 100 K. By combining these data with existing elastic and thermal data on similar alloys, we find that those alloys which can undergo diffusionsless phase transitions, such as Ti:Nb, Ti:V, or Zr:Nb in certain ranges of composition have glasslike excitations, since they have elastic properties which agree in magnitude and temperature dependence with those of amorphous solids. By contrast. crystalline continuous solution alloys, such as Nb:Ta, or alloys with diffusive phase transitions, such as high-pressure quenched Al94Si6, have the same elastic properties as are known for crystals.

Notes: Abstract A method is described for studying thermal phonon scattering in thin films on dielectric substrates below a few Kelvin. It is used to study silica films on silicon substrates. Using Monte Carlo simulations with no free parameters, we find that thermally grown silica films 0.1 to 1.0 μm thick scatter the phonons as strongly as bulk silica, and hence, have the same thermal conductivity as bulk silica, while a 0.1 μm thick e-beam evaporated silica film has a thermal conductivity five times smaller than bulk silica, indicative of additional defects.

Notes: Abstract Using the double–paddle oscillator, we have measured the mass and the shear modulus of thin films of water ice, argon and neon during annealing at cryogenic temperatures. From this, we have determined the vapor pressure of the three solids. They are in good agreement with published values for H 2 O and Ar; for Ne, they extend the vapor pressure to 10 −11 torr, ten orders of magnitude smaller than previous measurements. On the polycrystalline noble gas films condensed at low temperatures, the shear modulus was found to increase logarithmically with the annealing time. This stiffening is similar to that observed previously for amorphous water ice, and is hence not connected to the amorphous structure of the latter.

Notes: Abstract The Lorenz number, which was assumed to be a universal factor, was later found to be deviating from its theoretical Sommerfeld value. Our understanding of the physics of the Weidemann-Franz-Lorenz law is based on a large number of investigations. In view of its importance in the understanding of thermal and electrical conductivity (particularly the electronic contribution), an attempt has been made to review the experimental determination of Lorenz number in metals, semi-metals, alloys and degenerate semiconductors.

Notes: Abstract By simultaneously measuring the phonon scattering at or near a silicon surface and the phonon transmission from it into liquid helium, we have correlated quantitatively these two processes. For a clean polished silicon surface, the scattering of thermal phonons below 0.3 K becomes very small, and the transmission probability in this case approaches the prediction of the acoustic mismatch theory, which is 0.27%. The transmission probability increases, i.e. the thermal boundary resistance decreases, as the diffuse scattering increases either as a result of increasing the phonon frequency or the disorder at the surface. In the limit of completely diffuse scattering, the phonon transmission probability exceeds 30%, and the thermal boundary resistance approaches the value predicted by the diffuse mismatch model to within a factor of three.
