    Notizen: Abstract Objected-oriented analysis methods are developed for distributed finite element analysis of truss structures. The method is based on distributed solution of finite element equations using the substructuring method. Objects for static analysis of truss structures are identified and presented in a pseudocode form. The developed techniques are implemented in a network of workstations. A software tool called the IDL-C++ (RPC) compiler has been developed to aid the programmer in constructing distributed object applications. The speedup/performance for moderate size problems is presented to illus- trate the present approach for truss analysis using distributed object-oriented methods.

    Notizen: Abstract This study demonstrates through experimental validation, that one can predict critical loads of arbitrarily shaped cracked rubber specimens of the mixed-mode type (mode I and II) using a plane stress finite element method and utilizing material constants that characterize the mechanical and fracture properties of SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber) material determined from experimental tests on a mode I specimen. Conversely, the finite element method can be used to extract useful critical tearing energy information from complicated, arbitrarily shaped cracked rubber specimens. The predicted critical loads or critical tearing energies for crack growth initiation and final fracture, as well as the crack growth initiation direction are compared to the experimental data with good agreement.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Résumé On calcule l'énergie d'arrachement d'une pastille de caoutchouc vulcanisée par le méthode d'extension virtuelle d'une fissure, en utilisant des éléments finis isoparamétriques, exprimés en se basant sur une variation du mapping géométrique. Les éléments finis isoparamétrique à huit noeuds relatifs aux grandes déformations sous état plan de déformation sont exprimées en se basant sur une description totale de Lagrangien et sur une formulation par incréments. On utilise l'énergie critique d'arrachement comme critère de rupture en vue de produire la valeur critique de la tension ou de l'étirement entraînant une croissance de la fissure. En vue d'illustrée la précision et la valeur de cette formulation et du protocole de calcul, on traite à titre d'exemple, de l'éprouvette de fissuration sur appui simple et de l'éprouvette de fissuration en cisaillement pur, qui sont couramment utilisées dans les études de rupture et de fatigue des caoutchoucs. Les résultats obtenus sont comparés à d'autres solutions possibles, et avec des résultats expérimentaux lorsqu'ils sont disponibles, et on constate un bon accord.
    Notizen: Abstract The tearing energy of rubber vulcanizates is calculated by the virtual crack extension method using isoparametric finite elements, which are formulated based on a variation of geometry mapping. The large strain eight-node plane-stress isoparametric finite element is formulated based on total Lagrangian description and incremental formulation. The critical tearing energy is used as the fracture criterion to predict the critical values of stress or stretch for crack growth. To illustrate the accuracy and value of the present formulation and computer code, examples of a single edge crack specimen and a pure shear crack specimen, which are commonly used in fatigue and fracture studies of rubber, were studied. The results obtained are compared with alternative solutions and experimental data whenever available, and good agreement was found.

    Notizen: Abstract Three-dimensional and plane stress finite element analyses were carried out to investigate the stress fields and fracture parameters of interface cracks in rubber materials. The tearing energy computations for any arbitrarily shaped 3D crack front in dissimilar materials were obtained using the virtual crack extension method. The finite element results obtained are validated against existing alternate solutions and experimental data for cracks in homogeneous as well as bimaterial cases. The effects of different rubber material models, tearing energy distributions, crack extension angles, and three-dimensional regions at the crack tip for interface cracks are presented and discussed. It is shown that nonlinear materials have larger three-dimensional effects near the interface crack front, and that this effect increases as the material mismatch increases.

    Notizen: The paper presents a distributed computing approach for concurrent finite element analysis of truss structures. The client-server model of distributed computation is applied to the plane frame finite element algorithm and implemented on SUN workstations. The remote procedure call combined with the ability to create threads of computation allows one to efficiently implement distributed and concurrent programs. The present approach is demonstrated through a typical truss structure to illustrate the details of the implementation. This approach can be used for very large finite element systems.

    Notizen: The fracture stress and material property degradation of bovine cortical bone specimens were investigated experimentally under accelerated cyclic tensile stress testing. The fracture stress of a typical specimen was found from a static tensile test, and the cyclic loading/unloading was calculated as a percentage of this fracture stress. The results of accelerated cyclic stress tests were compared to monotonically increased static tests to determine if loading/unloading has an effect on the damage mechanism in bone. It was found that fracture stress of the bone increases due to accelerated stress cycling whereas the modulus decreases in a logarithmic fashion with increasing cyclic stress. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
