    Notes: Summary Chromosome studies on 8 species of EuropeanCryptocephalus; C. aureolus Suffr.,C. capucinus Suffr.,C. globicollis Suffr.,C. hypochoeridis L.,C. moraei L.,C. rugicollis Ol.,C. sexpustulatus Vill., andC. violaceus Laich. have shown an identical karyotypic formula, 14II+Xyr, 2n=30. Most species ofCryptocephalus share 2n=30 chromosomes. The only interspecific differences are in the size of bivalents and in the sex-determining systems. The chromosomal interrelationships ofCryptocephalus with other allied groups are also discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The number and distribution of chiasmata per cell at diakinesis has been analyzed in four populations ofDicladispa testacea (L.) and in two ofPolyconia caroli Lepr. both having 2n=16 and a 7+Xyp male melotic formula. Most bivalents were unichiasmate and the distal chiasma position was the one most frequently encountered. One population ofDicladispa testacea could be distinguished from the remaining ones by the total number of chiasmata per cell. This intraspecific difference is discussed in relation with the degree of isolation between the four populations and other geographical characteristics.

    Notes: Summary The chromosomal analysis ofT. intricata Hald. has shown a diploid complement of 44 chromosomes, the highest number found inTimarcha and clearly different from those of the taxa previously studied. This complement favours a derivative origin of theAmericanotimarcha subgenus from a hypothetical ancestral species of 20 chromosomes. The implications of this karyotype are also discussed with some morphological, biogeographical and ecological points of view and observations.

    Notes: Summary Two thousand people on the Isles of the Baleares were screened for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency using a commerically available kit. Among the thousand males tested, five were found deficient; of the thousand women, one had low enzyme activity according to this test. Diagnosis of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency could be verified using hair follicle analysis on mailed hair samples. The same technique also allowed heterozygotes to be identified unequivocally.

The male meiotic bivalent formula ofP. azureus Suffr.,P. catalonicus Burl. andP. petitpierrei Daccordi is 7II+Xyr.Cryptocephalus sexmaculatus Ol. andC. vittula Suffr. have 13II+Xyp,C. bipunctatus L. 14II+Xyr,C. ochroleucus Steph. andC. ocellatus Drap. 14II+Xyp,C. crassus 01. 15II+Xyr,C. sulphureus 01. 15II+Xyp, the same number as inC. fulvus Goeze with 2n=32 chromosomes, whileC. primarius Har. has 19II+Xyp. The modal chromosome number inCryptocephalus is 2n=30 (about 60% of spp.), and most species are characterized their small chromosomes. The low variation found in the karyotypes of Cryptocephalinae along with their possible interrelationships with allied chrysomelid subfamilies are also discussed.

    Notes: Summary A 142 base-pair satellite DNA from the mealworm beetle,Tenebrio molitor, has been cloned and sequenced. The satellite DNA is revealed by making a restriction digest of genomic DNA with either EcoRI or Hinfl, and constitutes approximately 49% of the genomic DNA. The presence of huge amounts of satellite DNA correlates well with the prominent blocks of heterochromatin found in tenebrionid beetles. A similar restriction digest ofXanthogaleruca luteola genomic DNA does not release a prominent satellite component.

    Notes: Abstract In situ hybridization to chromosomes and nuclei ofTenebrio molitor shows the massive presence of a species-specific satellite DNA in all chromosomes and six sites of rDNA in mitotic chromosomes. These sites are located in two autosomal pairs and in the X and Y chromosomes. In a related species,Misolampus goudoti, in which two different families of highly repetitive DNA have been previously characterized, one family is located in centromeric regions of all chromosomes with the exception of chromosome Y, while the other repeated DNA family is present both in centromeric and distal regions of all chromosomes. rRNA genes in this species are present in a medium-sized autosomal pair only. These results show that molecular cytogenetics can be applied to coleopteran chromosomes and open the way for a physical mapping of DNA sequences in these organisms. The results also provide insights into the type of meiotic association of the X and Y chromosomes in Coleoptera and the distribution of repeated DNAs within the genome of these insects.

    Notes: Abstract SixChrysolina species from Catalonia and the Canary Islands (Spain), viz.americana, gemina, femoralis, cerealis, menthastri andpolita, have similar diploid karyotypes of 24 (sub)metacentric chromosomes, and show Xy sex-determining system.C. banksi andobsoleta have 2n (♂)=23; their karyotype is presumably derived from that of the former group by loss of the y chromosomes. InC. haemoptera andC. carnifex 40 elements appear in the diploid set. It seems that 2n=24 is the most frequent number in theChrysolina. Higher chromosome numbers have possibly originated through centric fissions, as the acrocentric shape ofC. carnifex chromosomes seems to suggest. The 2n=23 and 24 species feed onLabiatae, while the two higher chromosome number species are associated with plants belonging to other families.

    Notes: Abstract Sixteen species ofLongitarsus have been chromosomally surveyed, showing a continuous range of even numbers from 2n=26 to 2n=32 chromosomes. Among the total of twenty-three known species, about 40% display a 14+Xy male karyotypic formula, the possible modal and most primitive one for the genus. The current taxonomy of species groupings is in good agreement with the chromosome numbers in some cases, but not in others. Also, there is no interrelationship between chromosome numbers and foodplant selection. The number of large bivalents at metaphase I is generally negatively correlated with the diploid value, suggesting the possible role of centric fusions coupled to shifts in the amount of chromatin as the main chromosomal changes in the evolution ofLongitarsus. The karyotypes of a few studied species are composed of metacentric chromosomes, some of them of rather large size, and a minute y-chromosome. A possible example of polymorphism for the chromosome number inL. nigrofasciatus is reported and briefly discussed.
