    Description: This study analyzes coccolithophore abundance fluctuations (e.g., Emiliania huxleyi, Gephyrocapsa specimens, and Florisphaera profunda) in core MD01-2444 sediment strata retrieved at the Iberian Margin, northeastern Atlantic Ocean. Coccolithophores are calcareous nannofossils, a major component of the oceanic phytoplankton, which provide information about past ecological and climatological variability. Results are supported by data on fossil organic compounds (sea surface temperatures, alkenones, and n-hexacosan-1-ol index) and geochemical analyses (benthic d13Ccc and planktonic d18Occ isotopes). Three scenarios are taken into account for this location at centennial-scale resolution over the last 70,000 years: the Holocene and the stadial and interstadial modes. The different alternatives are described by means of elements such as nutrients; upwelling phenomena; temperatures at surface and subsurface level; or the arrival of surface turbid, fresh, and cold waters due to icebergs, low sea level, increased aridity, and dust. During the Holocene, moderate primary productivity was observed (mainly concentrated in E. huxleyi specimens); surface temperatures were at maxima while the water column was highly ventilated by northern-sourced polar deep waters and warmer subsurface, nutrient-poor subtropical waters. Over most of the last glacial stadials, surface productivity weakened (higher F. profunda and reworked specimen percentages and lower diunsaturated and triunsaturated C37 alkenones); the arrival of cold Arctic surface waters traced by tetraunsaturated C37 peaks and large E. huxleyi, together with powerful ventilated southern-sourced polar deep waters, disturbed, in all likelihood, the delicate vertical equilibrium while preventing significant upwelling mixing. Finally, during the last glacial interstadials (lower F. profunda percentages, nonreworked material, and higher diunsaturated and triunsaturated C37 alkenones) a combined signal is observed: warm surface temperatures were concurrent with generally low oxygenation of the deep-sea floor, moderate arrival of northern-sourced deep waters, and subsurface cold, nutrient-rich, recently upwelled waters, probably of polar origin; these particular conditions may have promoted vertical mixing while enhancing surface primary productivity (mainly of Gephyrocapsa specimens).

    Description: Planktonic foraminiferal assemblages were studied at high-resolution in core KC01B from the Ionian Sea. Quantitative analysis allowed us to distinguish the main climatic features and associated paleoceanographic changes, that occurred between Marine Isotopic Stages (MIS) 13 and 9 (~500-300 ka). MIS 12 and MIS 10 are characterized by relatively temperate conditions and an oligotrophic oceanographic regime in the early part and by colder conditions and nutrient supply in the sub-surface water masses in the upper part. During these intervals, small but distinct peaks of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma sinistral (sin) are detected at times of extremely negative values of the planktonic foraminifera paleoclimatic curve. Their co-occurrence with similar episodes in the Atlantic suggests that the climate in the Central Mediterranean was associated with north-Atlantic millennial-scale climate instability. MIS 11 and MIS 9 are dominated by surficial warm-water taxa. The climate optimum is reached in the middle part of each of these stages, as denoted by the presence of Globigerinoides sacculifer, and persists for approximately 20 and 6 ka during MIS 11 and MIS 9 respectively. This warming is not constant but is characterized by three distinct intervals with elevated winter temperatures and/or weak winter mixing. Distribution of Globigerina bulloides, Turborotalita quinqueloba and N. pachyderma dextral (dex) indicates that significant environmental changes occur across the transitions from glacial to interglacial MIS 12/MIS 11 (Termination V) and MIS 10/MIS 9 (Termination IV). The studied record documents a close linkage between Mediterranean climate evolution and higher- and lower-latitude climate change throughout MIS 13-9.

    Description: Here we present a high-resolution faunal, floral and geochemical (stable isotopes and trace elements) record from the sediments of Ocean Drilling Program Site 963 (central Mediterranean basin), which shows centennial/millennial-scale resemblance to the high-northern latitude rapid temperature fluctuations documented in the Greenland ice cores between 20 and 70 kyr BP. Oxygen and carbon isotopes, planktic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossil distributions suggest that Dansgaard-Oeschger (D/O) and Heinrich events (HE) are distinctly expressed in the Mediterranean climate record. Moreover, recurrent though subdued oscillations not previously identified in the Lateglacial Mediterranean sediments document a significant centennial-scale climate variability in the basin that is greater than previously thought. Alternations between climate regimes dominated by polar outbreaks during D/O stadials and warm D/O interstadials, with associated intensification of continental runoff, are well expressed in the ODP Site 963. These place the Mediterranean basin as an often overlooked recorder of the interplay between large- and regional- scale climate controls at intermediate latitudes, and of the possible interactions between different components of the climate system. Significant changes in Ba/Ca values measured in Globigerinoides ruber shells from a number of D/O stadials and interstadials suggest enhanced freshwater input from the north-eastern Mediterranean borderland during the D/O interstadials. However, the short duration of 3D stratification events never led to complete oxygen consumption along the water column, but clear effects of sluggish 3D circulation in the basin are testified to by negative excursions in d13C measured in selected species of planktic and benthic foraminifera. HEs are constantly associated with lightening in the d18O record of planktic foraminifera, possibly because of the impact of iceberg melting in the Iberian Margin on Mediterranean thermohaline circulation. Interestingly, in two cases in particular, HE2 and HE5, fresher water inputs also affected deeper horizons of intermediate waters, suggesting a basin-wide impact.

    Description: Middle Miocene (14.8–11.9 Ma) deep-sea sediments from ODP Hole 747A (Kerguelen Plateau, southern Indian Ocean) contain abundant, well-preserved and diverse planktonic foraminiferal assemblages. A detailed study of the climatic and hydrographic changes that occurred in this region during the Middle Miocene Climatic Transition led to the identification of an intense cooling phase (the Middle Miocene Shift). Abundance fluctuations of planktonic foraminiferal species with different paleoclimatic affinities, and oxygen and carbon stable isotopes have been integrated in a multi-proxy approach. Reconstruction of changes in foraminiferal faunal composition and diversity through time were the basis for identification of three foraminiferal biofacies. The most prominent faunal change took place at 13.8 Ma, when a fauna with warm-water affinity (marked by high abundance of Globorotalia miozea group and Globoturborotalita woodi plexus) was replaced by an oligotypic, opportunistic fauna with typical polar characters and dominated by neogloboquadrinids. This faunal change is interpreted as the result of foraminiferal migration from adjacent bioprovinces, caused by modifications in climate and hydrography. A positive 2.0 per mil shift in d18O (interpreted as the Mi3 event) and a related positive 1.0 per mil shift in d13C (corresponding to the CM6 event) accompanied this faunal turnover. These are interpreted to reflect substantial reorganization of Southern Ocean waters, the northward migration of the Polar Front and a strong increase in primary productivity. The second faunal change took place at 12.9 Ma and was characterized by the gradual decrease in abundance of the neogloboquadrinids and the recovery of Globorotalia praescitula/scitula group and Globigerinita glutinata. A positive 1.5 per mil shift in d18O (interpreted as the Mi4 event) and a concurrent gradual negative shift in d13C accompanied this faunal change, witnessing further modifications of the climate/ocean system. Variations in sea surface temperature, considered as the main factor causing changes of surface hydrography at the Kerguelen Plateau, seem to have been driven by obliquity and long-term eccentricity, thus suggesting a key role played by the astronomical forcing on the evolution of Southern Ocean dynamics during the Middle Miocene. Also an evident 1.2 Myr modulation of the ?13C record suggests a main control of the long-term obliquity cycles on the carbon cycle dynamics. Particularly, the Mi3/CM6 events exactly fit with a node of the 1.2 Myr modulation cycles. This confirms the key role played by orbital parameters on high-latitude temperatures and Antarctic ice volume, and indirectly on global carbon burial and/or productivity. This climatic transition was marked also by changes in surface hydrography. From 14.8 to 13.8 Ma an intermediate-strength thermocline controlled by seasonality developed just below the photic zone. Weaker seasonality characterized the interval from 13.8 to 12.9 Ma, when the thermocline became shallower and sharper and favored intermediate-water foraminifers. From 12.9 Ma, seasonality increased again and an intermediate-strength thermocline re-developed.
