    Notes: Abstract Call a connected planar graphG legal if it has at least two nodes, no parallel edges or self-loops and at most two terminals (degree 1 nodes) and all terminals and degree 2 nodes are exterior. This class of graphs arose in connection with a two-dimensional generating system for modeling growth by binary cell division. Showing that any permitted pattern can be generated properly requires a matching or pairing lemma. The vertex set of a legal graph withn nodes can be split intop adjacent pairs ands singletons withs p, resulting in a matching which includes at least $$2\left[ {\frac{n}{3}} \right]$$ nodes. This bound is sharp in the sense that there are legal graphs for which this matching is maximum. The matching can be implemented by a linear time algorithm. A legal graph witht terminals and n≥4 nodes has a spanning tree with at most $$\left[ {\frac{{n - t}}{2}} \right] + t$$ terminals; this bound is sharp. Such a spanning tree can be constructed by an algorithm which operates in almost linear time.

    Notes: Abstract We have obtained near-infrared (JK) imaging for 67 star-forming galaxies from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid survey. Aperture photometry at one and three disk-scale lengths have been performed on the J, K and r-band images. By comparing the r - J, J - K colors and equivalent widths of Hα with evolutionary synthesis models we derive the mass of newly formed stars, which is typically a 1 per cent of the galaxy stellar mass. The galaxy stellar masses obtained range between 3×109 and 3×1011 M⊙. The distribution of burst strengths and specific star formation rates indicate a low level of star formation activity.

    Notes: Abstract We have studied the velocity field of the Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy Mrk86 using an Hα Fabry-Perot image and 14 long-slit optical spectra. From the ionized gas velocities measured we have found that Mrk86 follows a solid-body rotation law with a central angular velocity of 34 ± 5 km s-1 kpc-1. The comparison of the modeled rotation curve with our velocity data indicates a clear dominance of the stellar mass component over the dark matter. Related with the galaxy most intense star forming knot, a very strong gradient steeping is observed. Finally, we give kinematic evidence for the Mrk86-C expanding bubble.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of a previous infection (acute and chronic) on the kinetics of the immune humoral response in rats challenged with Fasciola hepatica was studied. Two infected groups were reinfected at different times – one, at 4 weeks after primary infection (w.a.p.i.); and the other, at 11 w.a.p.i. Signs of reinfection were observed in the two challenged groups as evidenced by an increment in glutamate dehydrogenase and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase activity after secondary infection. IgG subclass (IgG1, IgG2a, IgG2b, IgG2c) responses to F. hepatica excretory/secretory products (FhESP) differed, depending on the time of challenge infection, but no difference was observed between the reinfected groups. A predominance of the IgG1 subclass was noted in the group challenged at 4 w.a.p.i., and IgG2b and IgG2c were prominent in the group reinfected at 11 w.a.p.i. These results indicate that the presence of juvenile or adult flukes in the liver at the time of challenge seems to influence the immune response to a secondary infection.

    Notes: Abstract An indirect ELISA test using as antigen a recombinant parasite protein, hypodermin C, was developed to measure Hypoderma-specific antibodies in cattle sera and compared with natural hypodermin C. To evaluate the field efficacy of the ELISA test, 334 serum samples were collected from cows raised at farms in Galicia for a serological survey. Compared with an ELISA based on natural parasite antigen, the recombinant hypodermin C gave excellent results, with a sensitivity of 95.8% and a specificity of 95.7%. Considering the cut-off point, with the recombinant hypodermin C, 70.9% of the animals had positive levels of antibodies to Hypoderma and with natural hypodermin C, 73.6%. Recombinant hypodermin C appears to be a useful alternative to the natural parasite antigen for the serodiagnosis of Hypoderma sp in cattle.

    Description: Goethite-cemented duricrusts, also known as canga, commonly occur as a capping rock protecting underlying iron ore deposits. The processes that govern canga formation are still unclear but include recurrent partial dissolution and recrystallisation of goethite through biogeochemical cycling of iron, hypothesised to be catalysed by plants and bacteria. In the present study, the effect of plant exudates on mobilisation of iron in canga was examined using model plants grown on crushed canga in RHIZOtest devices, which separate roots from substrate by a semi-permeable membrane. Moderate plant-induced acidification of the canga was detected, however the primary driver of mineral dissolution was the synergistic effect of reductive and ligand-promoted dissolution, identified by an increase in organic acids concentration and the presence of low concentrations of free ferrous iron. Whilst organic acids exudation lasted, iron cations were stabilised in solution; once the organic acids were degraded by microorganisms, the free cations precipitated as iron oxy-hydroxides. Mineralogical analysis and high-resolution microscopy confirmed our hypothesis that plants that grow in this iron-rich substrate contribute to iron dissolution indirectly (e.g., during phosphate solubilisation), and that the resulting surplus iron not taken up by the plants is redeposited, promoting the cementation of the residual minerals. Understanding the contribution of plants to the iron cycling in canga is crucial when formulating post-mining rehabilitation strategies for iron ore sites.

    Description: Demonstrating the biogenicity of presumptive microfossils in the geological record often requires supporting chemical signatures, including isotopic signatures. Understanding the mechanisms that promote the preservation of microbial biosignatures associated with microfossils is fundamental to unravelling the palaeomicrobiological history of the material. Organomineralization of microorganisms is likely to represent the first stages of microbial fossilisation and has been hypothesised to prevent the autolytic degradation of microbial cell envelope structures. In the present study, two distinct fossilisation textures (permineralised microfossils and iron oxide encrusted cell envelopes) identified throughout iron-rich rock samples were analysed using nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS). In this system, aluminium is enriched around the permineralised microfossils, while iron is enriched within the intracellularly, within distinct cell envelopes. Remarkably, while cell wall structures are indicated, carbon and nitrogen biosignatures are not preserved with permineralised microfossils. Therefore, the enrichment of aluminium, delineating these microfossils appears to have been critical to their structural preservation in this iron-rich environment. In contrast, NanoSIMS analysis of mineral encrusted cell envelopes reveals that preserved carbon and nitrogen biosignatures are associated with the cell envelope structures of these microfossils. Interestingly, iron is depleted in regions where carbon and nitrogen are preserved. In contrast aluminium appears to be slightly enriched in regions associated with remnant cell envelope structures. The correlation of aluminium with carbon and nitrogen biosignatures suggests the complexation of aluminium with preserved cell envelope structures before or immediately after cell death may have inactivated autolytic activity preventing the rapid breakdown of these organic, macromolecular structures. Combined, these results highlight that aluminium may play an important role in the preservation of microorganisms within the rock record.
