Description: Under the framework of the ANDRILL Southern McMurdo Sound (SMS) Project successful downhole experiments were conducted in the 1138.54 metre (m)-deep AND-2A borehole. Wireline logs successfully recorded were: magnetic susceptibility, spectral gamma ray, sonic velocity, borehole televiewer, neutron porosity, density, calliper, geochemistry, temperature and dipmeter. A resistivity tool and its backup both failed to operate, thus resistivity data were not collected. Due to hole conditions, logs were collected in several passes from the total depth at ~1138 metres below sea floor (mbsf) to ~230 mbsf, except for some intervals that were either inaccessible due to bridging or were shielded by the drill string. Furthermore, a Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP) was created from ~1000 mbsf up to the sea floor. The first hydraulic fracturing stress measurements in Antarctica were conducted in the interval 1000-1138 mbsf. This extensive data set will allow the SMS Science Team to reach some of the ambitious objectives of the SMS Project. Valuable contributions can be expected for the following topics: cyclicity and climate change, heat flux and fluid flow, seismic stratigraphy in the Victoria Land Basin, and structure and state of the modern crustal stress field.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. Flesh fly larvae of the speciesSarcophaga saracena andCalliphora erythrocephala were used. Different groups of larvae from the same parent, the same litter and under approximately the same meteorological conditions were fed exclusively on an abundant diet of the anterior lobe, posterior lobe and whole gland of the hypophysis of the pig. The controls were fed on an abundant diet of brain and muscle, obtained from the same animal. 2. A method for obtaining quickly the first stage larvae of a larviparous fly by cesarotomy was developed. 3. When fed to flesh fly larvae under the conditions described, anterior lobe of the hypophysis exercises no growth promoting influence; neither was the rate of metamorphosis accelerated over that of the control animals. 4. The differences in growth that do occur may be conveniently accounted for by the normal variation in growth development occurring in the species. 5. No toxic effect or any observable retardation of growth was produced on the larvae as a result of an exclusive and abundant diet of the gland substance. 6. The larvae ingesting muscle showed an increased larval period ranging from 25 to 40 hours over that of the maggots feeding on the other substances and this factor is dependent on a slower rate of liquefaction of this tissue, for the pupal period in all groups of larvae of the same parentage was approximately of the same duration. 7. The chemical make up of the different substances fed, as well as any resulting bacterial action on them does not appear to be of any great significance in these experiments, since the larvae feeding on them developed into healthy adult flies. 8. Since the injection of extracts of hypophysis (anterior lobe) is usually effective and in most cases non-effective when the gland substance is fed by mouth, it becomes necessary to make a distinction between the effects produced by the feeding of the hypophysis and those resulting from the injection of its extracts.

Notes: Summary The technique of Bakhvalov and Vasil'eva for evaluating Fourier integrals is discussed and used as the basis for providing computationally efficient and stable algorithms. The method is generalized to deal with a number of weight functions including those for the infinite ranges. A number of examples illustrate the methods.

Notes: Abstract An investigation is made of some Monte Carlo estimators particularly suited to the application of regression analysis. Sets of estimators are presented which integrate exactly multivariate polynomials of prescribed degree. Application to a number of test integrals shows that economical and accurate results can be obtained as well as reliable error estimates. A comparison is made with some other methods.

Notes: Summary Optimal extensions of quadrature rules are of importance in the construction of automatic integrators but many sequences fail to exist in usable form. The paper considers some techniques for overcoming the problem of inextensibility with a minimal effect on integrating efficiency. A modification to the extension procedure proposed recently by Begumisa and Robinson is shown to be just a special case of the standard theory for quadrature extension. Some illustrative examples are included.

Notes: [Auszug] THE ability to see stereoscopic pictures without a stereoscope, referred to by Mr. G. R. R. Bray in NATURE of Nov. 26, p. 959, is, if not common, at least fairly easy to acquire. I have been able to view such pictures, with, naked eyesight, for many years past. If one places a pair of ...

Notes: [Auszug] SINCE the publication of Prof. T. M. Lowry's article in NATURE of February 20, 1926, p. 271—an article which, I observed, drew a gentle remonstrance from Prof. Armstrong in the issue of April 17—I have felt that some rejoinder was desirable, but was held back by the fact that adequately to ...
