Notes: Abstract The reproductive biology of Antipathes fiordensis Grange, a species endemic to south-western New Zealand, was followed from April 1994 to May 1995. Ten colonies were individually tagged in Doubtful Sound and sampled on a monthly basis in order to determine their reproductive activity. The fecundity of each of the five tagged female colonies was determined by estimating the total number of polyps per colony from photographs of each colony and by planimetry, the proportion of gravid polyps per colony, and the mean number of oocytes per gravid polyp. In addition, 56 colonies were sampled in March 1995 to estimate the sex ratio, height at sexual maturity, and mean sizes of females and males. A. fiordensis was found to be a dioecious species which, in the absence of gonads in the polyps, has no obvious external morphological differences between the sexes. Broadcast spawning of gametes is the likely mode of reproduction. Gametogenesis began in November 1994 and was highly synchronous within and between colonies, with spawning occurring in March 1995. The sex ratio in adults was 1:1. Colonies reached sexual maturity between the heights of 70 and 105 cm which, based on existing estimates of growth rate, corresponds to a minimum age for sexual maturity of about 31 yr. The largest oocytes measured ranged from 100 to 140 μm in size. Female colonies produced between 1.3 and 16.9 million oocytes, with the larger colonies dominating the reproductive output of the population.

Notes: We have designed and built an improved, dedicated analytical scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). A novel feature of this microscope is a magnetic lens above the accelerating gun, allowing the specimen probe to achieve very high current densities while retaining the high spatial resolution of the STEM. Integrated with this microscope, we have also implemented an image processing system which allows rapid analysis of the digitized microscope output signals. This processing system also allows the graphic simulation of planar materials (such as intercalated graphite) to derive diffraction pattern simulations for comparison with the experimental data. An image database system allows over 2000 images to be easily managed.

Notes: This article describes the use of the Fabry–Perot laser interferometer in the fringe mode to measure velocities of fast-moving reflecting surfaces, and includes a review of previously published work. We begin by describing the theory of the Doppler shift that applies to these situations, and include an experimental test of whether surface normal direction affects Doppler shift. Formulas are derived for the analysis of the effects of shocked, dispersive, moving transparent media on velocity measurements, including expressions for the velocity of light in a moving medium with moving boundaries. The Fabry–Perot method is compared with other techniques such as the VISAR interferometer. We then describe in detail a standard configuration developed at our facilities, discuss other configurations using optical fibers and more than one cylinder lens, and describe a new laser amplifier developed specifically for velocimetry. Methods of alignment, instrument calibration, surface preparation, and operation are included. Next, we present several methods of analysis, the choice of which depends on the absolute accuracy required, and examine many sources of possible error. These analytical techniques allow the motion of surfaces of reflectivity of at least 1% to be measured with an absolute precision of 0.5%. Time resolution can be a few nanoseconds, and is traded off for velocity resolution. One can make continuous velocity records of surfaces whose reflectivity under shock loading decreases to less than 1% of its initial value. We have simultaneously recorded three distinct velocity–time histories without ambiguity.

Notes: Plasma corticosteroid concentrations in channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, (normally 1.0 ± 0.3 μg/100 ml) increased significantly (to 5.9 ± 1.2μg/100 ml) in response to acute oxygen depletion and then returned to control levels within 30 min after the dissolved oxygen concentration was increased; however, a secondary increase in plasma corticosteroid levels was observed 6 h after exposure. Corticosteroid levels also increased in fish exposed to dissolved oxygen concentration of 〈0.2 mg/1 for three days. Methylene blue was not effective in preventing interrenal response to low dissolved oxygen. No diurnal plasma corticosteroid rhythm was observed in fish exposed to diurnal chemical rhythms of culture ponds.

Notes: Metabolic consequences of chronic elevation of cortisol in the diet of yearling channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, were studied. Cortisol was incorporated into the diet in concentrations of 1, 10, 50 and 100 μg/g of food. This diet was offered at 3% of the body weight per day for 10 weeks. Fish were individually weighed and measured at 2-week intervals and feeding rates were adjusted. Body weight, liposomatic index and condition factor were significantly lower and food conversion was significantly higher in fish fed 50 or 100 μng cortisol/g of food when compared with controls. The hepatosomatic index of fish fed cortisol at the rate of 100 μg/g of food decreased significantly. Specific activity of hepatic tyrosine aminotransferase was significantly higher at the two highest cortisol doses. Long-term cortisol administration can reduce growth and condition factor by activating gluconeogenic mechanisms in which lipids and amino acids, rather than carbohydrates, are used for energy production. The metabolic effects of exogenous cortisol in this study offer an explanation for the decreased growth of fish under conditions that activate the secretion of endogenous cortisol.

Notes: Abstract The theoretical aspects of fission track production in polycarbonate foils are briefly discussed. An automatic couning system for fissio tracks based on a spark gap chamber is described. A linear response for a low fission track density, typical of environmental and biological samples, was obtained with a252Cf source using an electrode of 33.2 mm2 The system also functions with electrodes of larger and smaller areas without any major changese in the instrument.

Notes: Summary A method is described for measuring the dynamicYoungs Modulus over a range of frequencies for muscle with various static loads. The results of measurements on the Ox Sternomandibularis muscle before and during the development of rigor mortis are presented. These show that the muscle behaves as an extremely non-linear viscoelastic material with properties that depend on both the conditions of measurement and the storage conditions prior to measurement.

Notes: Summary A method is proposed for characterizing the dynamic mechanical behaviour of non-linear viscoelastic materials in terms of two frequency dependent moduli and two functions of the strain amplitude. These rheological parameters represent material properties and are shown to be independent of the sample dimensions. A method for determining the strain dependent functions from observations of the force and corresponding displacement on a sample is described. The method can be used even when the strain is not uniform throughout the sample. As an example of the use of this method a single pair of functions, defining the dependence of the storage and loss moduli on strain amplitude, have been obtained for a sample of a non-linear viscoelastic material sheared longitudinally between concentric cylinders. These functions are consistent with all the experimental data obtained over a wide range of ratio of cylinder diameters and a wide range of displacement amplitudes.
