Description / Table of Contents: The accelerated, and often uncontrolled, growth of the cities has contributed to the ecological transformation of their immediate surroundings. Factors contributing to the urban vulnerability include: lowering or rising of the water table, subsidence, loss of bearing capacity of soil foundations and instability of slopes. Recent catastrophic earthquakes highlight the poor understanding by decision makers of seismic related risk, as well as the tendency of some builders to use the cheapest designs and construction materials to increase short-term economic returns on their investment. Losses from earthquakes will continue to increase if we do not shift towards proactive solution. Disaster reduction is both an issue for consideration in the sustainable development agenda and a cross-cutting issue relating to the social, economic, environmental and humanitarian sectors. As location is the key factor, which determines the level of risk associated with a hazard, land-use plans and mapping should be used as tools to identify the most suitable usage for vulnerable areas.

Notes: Summary The dispersion of higher modes of surface waves over a region covered by an array of stations can be measured by applying a frequency-wavenumber transform to segments of the signals in these stations, centered at a number of group-velocities. Thus, at a fixed period, modes appear as separate maxima in a display of the power spectrum on a phase-velocity vs. group velocity plane. For regions of mild lateral heterogeneity, the main source of error is shown to be due to the inadequacy of the array-response. Numerical experiments with synthetic signals indicate that a precision of the order of 1% can be obtained with a realistic number of stations. Improvements should be obtained by averaging data obtained from different events. The danger of misidentification of modes can be reduced by iteratively removing the sidelobes from the mode-separation diagram.

Notes: Abstract Two new techniques in surface wave analysis, the modified moving window method and the method of stacking and cleaning, are used to determine average group and phase velocities over the area covering the Adriatic Sea and the Northern and Central Apennines, while avoiding the anomalous region under the Po plain. The data indicate that the lateral homogeneity of the region is sufficiently good to allow for an ‘averaged’ model of the lithosphere. Backus-Gilbert inversion of the data leads to an averaged model with a thick sedimentary cover (10–11 km), a normal continental Moho depth of about 35 km, and a velocity rise with depth below the crust. The extremely low group velocity data that are encountered both in the Apennine region and in the Adriatic Sea suggest a similarity between the crustal structure of this area and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Notes: Abstract In the seismic flow it is often observed that a Strong Earthquake (SE), is followed by Related Strong Earthquakes (RSEs), which occur near the epicenter of the SE with origin time rather close to the origin time of the SE. The algorithm for the prediction of the occurrence of a RSE has been developed and applied for the first time to the seismicity data of the California-Nevada region and has been successfully tested in several regions of the world, the statistical significance of the result being 97%. To date it has been possible to make five successful forward predictions, with no false alarms or failures to predict. The algorithm is applied here to the Italian territory, where the occurrence of RSEs is a particularly rare phenomenon. Our results show that the standard algorithm is successfully directly applicable without adjustment of the parameters. Eleven SEs are considered. Of them, three are followed by a RSE, as predicted by the algorithm, eight SEs are not followed by a RSE, and the algorithm predicts this behaviour for seven of them, giving rise to only one false alarm. Since, in Italy, often the series of strong earthquakes is relatively short, the algorithm has been extended to handle such a situation. The result of this experiment indicates that it is possible to attempt to test a SE, for the occurrence of a RSE, soon after the occurrence of the SE itself, performing timely “preliminary” recognition on reduced data sets. This fact, the high confidence level of the retrospective analysis, and the first successful forward predictions, made in different parts of the World, indicates that, even if additional tests are desirable, the algorithm can already be considered for routine application to Civil Defence.

Notes: The elastic parameters and the thickness of the lithospheric part of the mantle, the lid, are correlated with the seismicity of Italy and surrounding areas through the estimation of several statistical parameters. In particular, the intensity of the flow of seismic events, deprived of aftershocks, reveals concentrations associated with large gradients in the lithospheric thickness. The average depth of crustal shocks tends to be very shallow in areas of thin and soft (low shear-wave velocities) lid. The positive influence, probably reflecting the thermal state in the lithosphere, is very large in connection with the thin and soft lid and where strong gradients in lid thickness are observed, and is small in connection with a thick and hard lid (high shear-wave velocities).

Notes: Summary A method of determining simultaneously the moment tensor and source time function in the point source approximation is presented. For trial values of the moment tensor components and of the source time function, parametrized by the sum of overlapping triangles delayed in time, theoretical seismograms can be synthetized and compared with the recorded ones. The iterative procedure determines the adjustment of source parameters until a good correlation of both synthetic and observed records is reached. The Green functions in a horizontally stratified medium are constructed with the use of a modal summation method. The limits of applicability of the algorithm are illustrated by the inversion of four synthetic seismograms constructed for two horizontally stratified models of the structure in Friuli area, Italy. The records constructed for the same structural model as for which the Green functions were computed can be inverted even in the high-frequency range. In the opposite case, when the records and Green functions used corresponded to different structural models, a good correlation of the input records with the final synthetics was obtained for low - pass filtered data only. Additional tests performed with input seismograms contaminated with random noise yielded good resolution of the moment tensor and the duration of the source time function even for a high noise to signal ratio.
