Abstract A simple method to immobilize cationic indicators onto the surface of ‘disposable’ polystyrene cuvettes is described. The cuvettes are sulfonated simply by exposure to sulfuric acid; cationic indicators then bind to the sulfonated polystyrene surface by electrostatic attractions. Following immobilization, the cuvettes can be used for analytical work and in classroom demonstrations, or machined into reusable sensor strips, or disks suitable for use with optical fibers.
