    Notes: It is shown that water vapor deposited onto metal surfaces between 80 and 130 K can be isothermally desorbed by applying a ramped electric field. At a ramp rate of ∼1 MV/cm/s the desorption field strength for physisorbed layers of amorphous ice on tungsten and iridium surfaces is ∼80 MV/cm. As the ice layers desorb in the presence of the high electric field, positive ions are formed which are detected. During this process, the ice exhibits properties of an electrical conductor or a semiconductor.

    Notes: Investigations of ion emission from LiF-coated metal anodes subjected to pulsed electric fields are reported. For LiF films having a thickness greater than 1000 A(ring), catastrophic vacuum arcs are initiated by electric-field pulsing. With films having a thickness less than 500 A(ring) field-stress-induced film removal proceeds direct field evaporation of Li+ from the anode surface.

    Notes: Ion emission has been obtained from a LiF-coated tungsten field-emitter tip. Ion formation is thought to be caused by the high electric field experienced by the LiF. At the time of emission the electric field at the surface of the LiF is calculated to be on the order of 100 MV/cm. Inside the LiF the field is on the order of 10 MV/cm. These fields exceed the value needed to produce bulk dielectric breakdown in LiF. The surface field is of sufficient magnitude to produce ion emission by field evaporation from the crystal surface. Even prior to dielectric breakdown, precursor processes can lead to ion formation. Electric-field-stress fragmentation of the LiF layer is thought to occur, followed by ionization of the fragments.

    Notes: An instrument with the tip positioning capability of a scanning tunneling microscope and the imaging capability of a field emission electron microscope has been developed. This instrument provides the ability to investigate the current-voltage characteristics of field emitter tips in the metal-vacuum, transition, and metal-vacuum-metal tunneling regimes. It also allows a field emitter tip to be imaged before and after these "close approach" measurements are made. Nonreproducible tunneling characteristics observed in the transition region have been associated with large changes in the apex of the field emitter tip. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A deposition fixture is described for placing proteins and nucleic acids onto field-emitter tips from aqueous solution. The fixture allows the coverage of these species on each of four tips to be independently selected by an appropriate choice of deposition parameters. Common rinsing volumes can be used without cross contamination of the tips. Four tips can be dosed in 20 min, the time previously taken to cover one tip with biological molecules. The fixture makes molecular deposition from aqueous solution both simple and routine.

    Notes: Field emission current fluctuations from microfabricated cathodes have been investigated. Time-correlated noise measurements and field emission electron microscope images indicate that the dominant current fluctuations are bistable in character and are emitted from a few localized sites on the cathode surface. Apertured bistable current transitions from these emission sites are often significantly larger than the percent change in total emitted current. Analysis of bistable pulse lengths has shown that the dwell time in a particular bistable emission state decays exponentially with time. Current autocorrelation measurements indicate that bistable noise at ≤300 K is generated by adsorbates switching between emission states and not by adsorbate diffusion. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The first measurements of electrohydrodynamic (EHD) ion emission from thin films of molten lithium nitrate under pulsed field conditions are presented. Pulse widths from ∼20 ns to 50 μs were used to initiate ion emission from the apex of a stainless-steel field emitter tip coated with molten lithium nitrate. Current densities (approximately-greater-than)100 A/cm2 were obtained from a single emission site. As the pulse width was increased from 20 ns to several microseconds the electric field required to initiate ion emission decreased and asymptotically approached the electric field value characteristic of dc operation. In contrast to dc operation, Li+ was the dominant species ((approximately-greater-than)90%) for pulse durations less than 1 μs. The abundance of Li+ was independent of pressure between 10−3 and 10−8 Torr of water vapor. The use of a lithium nitrate EHD ion source for the production of intense lithium ion beams in light-ion inertial confinement fusion reactors is foreseen.

    Notes: A new technique for placing biological molecules on metal, insulator, and semiconductor surfaces is described. The procedure requires only 10 μl of solution containing molecules at a concentration of 0.1 - 10 μg/ml. The use of a buffer that does not affect metal substrates, the possibility of fixing the molecules in solution prior to deposition, and the ability to minimize surface tension forces during air drying are other features of the new protocol. Simultaneous deposition on TEM grids and highly curved substrates permits biomolecular adsorption on technologically interesting materials to be visualized in the transmission electron microscope.
