Description: An analysis is presented of the parallel neutral stability of three-dimensional incompressible, isothermal boundary-layer flows. A Taylor-series expansion of the dispersion relation is used to derive the general eigenvalues. These equations are functions of the complex group velocity. These relations are verified by numerical results obtained for two- and three-dimensional disturbances in two- and three-dimensional flows.

Description: An analysis is presented of the nonparallel spatial or temporal stability of three-dimensional incompressible, isothermal boundary-layer flows taking into account the transverse velocity component as well as the axial and crossflow variations of the mean flow. The method of multiple scales is used to derive partial differential equations that describe the axial and crossflow variations of the disturbance amplitude, phase and wavenumbers. This equation is used to derive the expressions that relate the temporal and spatial instabilities. These relations are functions of the complex group velocities. Moreover, this equation is used to derive the expression that relates the spatial amplification in any direction to a calculated amplification in any other direction. These relations are verified by numerical results obtained for two- and three-dimensional disturbances in two- and three-dimensional flows.

Description: The linear stability of three-dimensional incompressible, isothermal, nonparallel boundary-layer flows has been investigated. The method of multiple scales is used to derive the partial-differential equations that describe the spatial modulations of the amplitude, phase and wavenumber of a disturbance. Group velocities are used to determine the disturbance growth direction. The envelope method is used to calculate the logarithmic amplitude growth rate N. The theory is applied to the flows over a swept-back tapered wing with boundary-layer suction. Results of such analysis for the X-21 wing are discussed. It is found that the nonparallel effects for this wing is substantial.

Notes: Summary Madura foot incited by a new species ofCephalosporium is presented. Case history, clinical symptoms and morphological features of the new pathogen are discussed. Comparative studies with the previously reported species indicate that the species isolated is an undescribed one and the nameCephalosporium madurae is proposed for it.

Notes: Abstract Penicilliosis marneffei has emerged as an endemic systemic mycosis in Southeast Asia among humans and wild bamboo rats. To gain an insight into the epidemiology of this life-threatening disease, a survey of bamboo rats for natural infections byPenicillium marneffei was carried out in the central plains of Thailand during June-September, 1987. Thirty-one lesser bamboo rats (Cannomys badius) and eight hoary bamboo rats (Rhizomys pruinosus) were trapped. Portions of their internal organs were cultured to determine if they had been infected byP. marneffei. Six each ofC. badius (19.4%) andR. pruinosus (75%) yielded cultures of this unique, dimorphicPenicillium species. All of the isolates were readily converted to their unicellular form that multiplies by the process of schizogony by incubating them at 37 °C on plates of brain heart infusion agar. Their identity was further confirmed by a specific immunological test. Among the internal organs of the positive rats, the lungs had the highest positivity (83.3%), next in decreased order of frequency were the liver (33.3%) and the pancreas (33.3%). The use and value of domestic and wild animals in locating and demarcating endemic areas of geophilic fungal pathogens are discussed. Penicilliosis marneffei is considered to be a zooanthroponosis — a disease that occurs in lower animals, as well as, humans.

Notes: Summary A report of thirty-four cases of ringworm of the scalp caused byT. violaceum studied at Sassoon Hospitals, Poona, India, is presented. The infections were found to be more common in children of the ages between 5 to 15 during the months of February to June. Majority of the affected individuals were undernourished. Symptomatologically the cases fall into five groups.

Notes: Abstract Incidence of dermatophytoses in patients attending the Department of Dermatology, Sassoon Hospitals, Poona carried out over a period of six years from 1958–1963 is presented. Every year ten to fourteen per cent of skin infections were of mycotic origin.T. rubrum was the commonest causal pathogen in 65.30 per cent of the positive cases. Infections of the scalp which were thought to be rare were found in 12.97 per cent of the cases of dermatophytoses.T. violaceum andT. tonsurans var.sulfureum were the main causal organisms of ringworm of the scalp. Observations on the influence of climatic conditions on the incidence, personal habits and causal agents are also presented.
