    Notes: Almost all ray-tracing methods ignore the analysis of the amplitudes of seismic arrivals and therefore utilize only half of the available information. We propose a method which is a combination of ray-tracing imaging and transformation of the amplitudes of wide-aperture data.Seismic data in the conventional X-T domain are first transformed to the domain of intercept time τ and ray parameter p to recover the plane wave response. The next step is the derivation of a series of plane wave reflection coefficients, which are mapped as a function of τ and p. The reflection coefficients R(τ, p) for two arbitrarily chosen traces can then be used in our inversion method to derive a slowness-depth and a density-depth profile. It is shown that the inclusion of amplitudes of seismic arrivals (in this method, we consider the acoustic case) makes the inverse method highly stable and accurate. In a horizontally stratified medium one can recover separate profiles of velocity and density. Since this method utilizes large-offset data, it can be used for separate recovery of velocity and density to a greater depth.

    Notes: Common midpoint data are now being collected with ever increasing source-receiver offsets. For wide aperture seismic data classical methods of interpretation fail, since velocity analyses and signal-to-noise enhancement methods based on hyperbolic traveltime curves are no longer appropriate. Therefore, the goals of increased velocity resolution and signal enhancement, which motivate the increase in offset, are not achieved. Approximate methods, involving higher order traveltime curves or extrapolations, have been developed for velocity analysis but these are ineffective in the presence of refracted arrivals, and lack a physical basis. These problems can be minimized by transforming the observational data to the domain of intercept or vertical delay time τ and horizontal ray parameter p. In this domain headwave refractions are collapsed into points and both near vertical and wide angle reflections can be analyzed simultaneously to derive velocity-depth information, even in the presence of velocity gradients or low velocity zones.

    Notes: Abstract In March and April 1995 a cooperative German, Costa Rican, and United States research team recorded onshore-offshore seismic data sets along the Pacific margin of Costa Rica using the R/V Ewing. Off the Nicoya Peninsula we used a linear array of ocean bottom seismometers and hydrophones (OBS/H) with onshore seismometers extending across much of the isthmus. In the central area we deployed an OBS/H areal array consisting of 30 instruments over a 9 km by 35-km area and had land stations on the Nicoya Peninsula adjacent to this marine array and also extending northeast on the main Costa Rican landmass. Our goal in these experiments was to determine the crustal velocity structure along different portions of this convergent margin and to use the dense instrument deployments to create migrated reflection images of the plate boundary zone and the subducting Cocos Plate. Our specific goal in the central area was to determine whether a subducted seamount is present at the location of the 1990, M 7 earthquake off the Nicoya Peninsula and can thus be linked to its nucleation. Subsequently we have processed the data to improve reflection signals, used the data to calculate crustal velocity models, and developed several wide-aperture migration techniques, based on a Kirchhoff algorithm, to produce reflection images. Along the northern transect we used the ocean bottom data to construct a detailed crustal velocity model, but reflections from the plate boundary and top and bottom of the subducting Cocos plate are difficult to identify and have so far produced poor images. In contrast, the land stations along this same transect recorded clear reflections from the top of the subducting plate or plate boundary, within the seismogenic zone, and we have constructed a clear image from this reflector beneath the Nicoya shelf. Data from the 3-D seismic experiment suffer from high-amplitude, coherent noise (arrivals other than reflections), and we have tried many techniques to enhance the signal to noise ratio of reflected arrivals. Due to the noise, an apparent lack of strong reflections from the plate boundary zone, and probable structural complexity, the resulting 3-D images only poorly resolve the top of the subducting Cocos Plate. The images are not able to provide compelling evidence of whether there is a subducting seamount at the 1990 earthquake hypocenter. Our results do show that OBS surveys are capable of creating images of the plate boundary zone and the subducting plate well into the seismogenic zone if coherent reflections are recorded at 1.8 km instrument spacing (2-D) and 5 km inline by 1 km crossline spacing for 3-D acquisition. However, due to typical high amplitude coherent noise, imaging results may be poorer than expected, especially in unfavorable geologic settings such as our 3-D survey area. More effective noise reduction in acquisition, possibly with the use of vertical hydrophone arrays, and in processing, with advanced multiple removal and possibly depth filtering, is required to achieve the desired detailed images of the seismogenic plate boundary zone.

    Description: In plane-wave migration techniques, plane-wave data sets with seismic energy in both positive and negative ray-parameter sections are more desirable than those with seismic energy only in either positive or negative ray-parameter sections. Such plane-wave data sets are often referred to as optimal plane-wave data sets because they can be used to illuminate the subsurface from both sides of the targets and, therefore, can produce sharp images. Traditionally, to obtain optimal plane-wave data sets from one-sided gathers generated by marine seismic acquisition geometry, one needs to invoke the reciprocity principle to sort split-spread gathers prior to implementing plane-wave decomposition. We have investigated the applicability of the reciprocity principle in the double plane-wave (DPW) domain. We have developed an easy and efficient merging method that generates optimal plane-wave data sets in the DPW domain using one-sided shot gathers. We call this resultant plane-wave data set the "optimal DPW data set." We find that an optimal DPW data set transformed from one-sided gathers is a good approximation to a DPW data set transformed from split-spread gathers with the same maximum offset as that of the one-sided gathers. We find that ray-parameter common-image gathers with continuous events in both positive and negative ray-parameter sections can be generated by migrating optimal DPW data sets. This helps migration velocity analysis and improves the subsurface illumination. In addition, we show that the computational cost of DPW migration methods could be reduced with the help of the reciprocity principle. We test our proposed method using a synthetic model to demonstrate its effectiveness.
