Description: Autoradiographic and biochemical analyses of the hearts of female rhesus monkeys and baboons indicate that atrial and ventricular myocardial cells contain androgen receptors. Although the specific effects of nuclear uptake and retention of androgen on the function of heart muscle cells are not known, the presence of this receptor suggests that sex steroid hormones may affect myocardial function directly and may explain some of the peculiar differences in heart disease between men and women.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉McGill, H C Jr -- Anselmo, V C -- Buchanan, J M -- Sheridan, P J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Feb 15;207(4432):775-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6766222" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Golden Syrian hamsters were placed individually in cages with three drinking bottles--one empty, one containing water, and the third containing water and ethanol. Control hamsters received water only. After 1 year the experimental hamsters showed a significantly lower concentration of leucine-enkephalin-like immunoreactive substance in the basal ganglia than the control hamsters. This finding indicates that the action of ethanol involves endogenous peptidyl opiates.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Blum, K -- Briggs, A H -- Elston, S F -- DeLallo, L -- Sheridan, P J -- Sar, M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1982 Jun 25;216(4553):1425-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7089531" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: ABSTRACT There are many uncertainties associated with aerosol-precipitation interactions, particularly in mountain regions where a variety of processes at different spatial scales influence precipitation patterns. Statistical relationships between aerosols and precipitation were examined in the southern Appalachian Mountains to determine the seasonal and synoptic influences on these relationships, as well as the influence of air mass source region. Precipitation events were identified based on regional precipitation data and classified using a synoptic classification scheme developed for this study and published in a separate manuscript (Kelly et al . 2012). Hourly aerosol data were collected at the Appalachian Atmospheric Interdisciplinary Research (AppalAIR) facility at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC (1110 m asl, 36.215°, –81.680°). Backward air trajectories provided information on upstream atmospheric characteristics and source regions. During the warm season (June–September), greater aerosol loading dominated by larger particles was observed, whereas cool season (November–April) precipitation events exhibited overall lower aerosol loading with an apparent influence from biomass burning particles. A significant relationship between aerosol optical properties and precipitation intensity was observed, which may be indicative of aerosol-induced precipitation enhancement in each season, particularly during warm season non-frontal precipitation. Notes: Summary Adult female armadillos were injected with tritiated estradiol. The pituitary gland was removed and processed for autoradiography. Nuclear uptake and retention of the steroid was found in 28.8% of the cells in the pars distalis and 3.7% of the pituicytes.

Notes: Summary Female rats were injected with3H-diethylstilbestrol. The pituitaries, oviducts, and uteri were removed and processed for autoradiography. The nuclear uptake and retention in these tissues appeared similar to that seen after the injection of3H-estradiol except in the pars nervosa of the pituitary gland.

Notes: Summary The intracellular distribution of unbound estrogen receptor was estimated using nonaqueous and aqueous isolation of nuclei and autoradiography. The estimated amount of nuclear receptor varied greatly with the procedure used and thus caution is urged in approximating the in vivo intracellular distribution of receptors.

Notes: Summary Castrated adult male hamsters and castrated adult female rats were injected with either 0.2 μg (hamsters) or 0.5 μg (rats) of 3H-dihydrotestosterone (107 Ci/mmole)/100 grams body weight and killed 11/2 h later. The pituitary glands were removed and processed for both autoradiography and immunocytochemistry (hamster) or only autoradiography (rats). Localization of the androgen was found in 10–15% of the cells of the pars distalis in both species. Only cells that stained for luteinizing hormone (LH) in the hamster's pars distalis concentrated the androgen. Also cells in both the pars intermedia and pars nervosa (1–5%) concentrated the androgen in both species. Although the number of cells that concentrated the androgen in the pars intermedia and pars nervosa was small, this finding may be related to recent physiologic data that suggest that the gonadal steroids may play a role in regulating water retention and natriuresis.

Notes: Summary Castrated adult male and female and androgenized female rats (AS rats) were injected i.v. with 3H-estradiol (E2). Nuclear uptake and retention of the 3H-steroid was examined in pituitary luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin (PRL) cells by the combined techniques of autoradiography and immunocytochemistry. About 80% of PRL cells were found to concentrate the radioactive steroid compound in all experimental groups, while 89%, 82% and 68% of LH cells were found to be labeled in AS rats, normal female and male rats, respectively. This suggests that there are subpopulations of LH or PRL cells that contain no or, if any, small numbers of E2 receptor. Statistical analysis revealed that PRL cells take up more radioactivity than LH cells in male rats, while there is no significant difference between female and AS rats. Variations in E2 uptake (coefficient of variation) was higher in LH cells than in PRL cells in male rats and in AS rats. In females, on the contrary, coefficient of variation was larger in PRL cells. Thus the characteristics of nuclear uptake and retention of estradiol in LH and PRL cells appear to be modulated in part by neonatal androgen since the pattern found in AS rats is different than that found in normal male and female rats.
