    Description: In the absence of disease, the vasculature of the mammalian eye is quiescent, in part because of the action of angiogenic inhibitors that prevent vessels from invading the cornea and vitreous. Here, an inhibitor responsible for the avascularity of these ocular compartments is identified as pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF), a protein previously shown to have neurotrophic activity. The amount of inhibitory PEDF produced by retinal cells was positively correlated with oxygen concentrations, suggesting that its loss plays a permissive role in ischemia-driven retinal neovascularization.     Description: Small-molecule synthesis usually relies on procedures that are highly customized for each target. A broadly applicable automated process could greatly increase the accessibility of this class of compounds to enable investigations of their practical potential. Here we report the synthesis of 14 distinct classes of small molecules using the same fully automated process. This was achieved by strategically expanding the scope of a building block-based synthesis platform to include even C(sp3)-rich polycyclic natural product frameworks and discovering a catch-and-release chromatographic purification protocol applicable to all of the corresponding intermediates. With thousands of compatible building blocks already commercially available, many small molecules are now accessible with this platform.     Notes: Abstract After a brief comparative review of the dynamic characteristics of the optokinetic reflex (OKR) in different species and after a brief description of the main anatomical structures involved in this reflex, a mathematical model of the OKR in the cat is presented. The experimental results obtained by Godaux and Vanderkelen (1984) in the normal and in the totally cerebellectomized cat were used to validate the model and to obtain an estimation of its parameters.

    Notes: Summary The problem of predicting the distribution of longitudinal growth stresses in a symmetrical, standing, woody stem is treated. It is assumed that coupling effects between longitudinal and transverse stress components are negligible so that the longitudinal stress distribution can be determined independently. One novel feature introduced in this analysis is that the material behaviour is assummed to be elastic, plastic rather than wholly elastic as in previous analyses of this problem. This assumption successfully limits the maximum intensity of the longitudinal compressive stress near the center of the stem. Another novel feature of the present analysis is that the initial, longitudinal, tensile stress at the periphery of the stem varies inversely with the size of the stem rather than being assumed constant as in previous analyses. Results obtained from this analysis are compared with previously published experimental data for curvatures and length changes of strips cut from diametral planks. The agreement is very good with the length change data over a wide range of stem sizes.
