    Description: This study was conducted in the Swedish sub-Arctic, near Abisko, in order to assess the direction and scale of possible vegetation changes in the alpine-birch forest ecotone. We have re-surveyed shrub, tree and vegetation data at 549 plots grouped into 61 clusters. The plots were originally surveyed in 1997 and re-surveyed in 2010. Our study is unique for the area as we have quantitatively estimated a 19% increase in tree biomass mainly within the existing birch forest. We also found significant increases in the cover of two vegetation types - "birch forest-heath with mosses" and "meadow with low herbs", while the cover of snowbed vegetation decreased significantly. The vegetation changes might be caused by climate, herbivory and past human impact but irrespective of the causes, the observed transition of the vegetation will have substantial effects on the mountain ecosystems.

Potential phosphatase activity and phytoplankton from several lakes of different character were compared in order to evaluate the importance of lake water pH and phytoplankton composition for the activity and pH optimum of lake water phosphatases.2. In oligotrophic lakes, in which phytoplankton biomass was most often dominated by Ochromonadaceae spp., optimum phosphate activity was found at pH values 〈6. In eutrophic lakes, where species of Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae dominated the phytoplankton biomass, optimum phosphatase activity was found at pH 7.5 or 8.5.3. The pH optimum of phosphatase activity often differed from the corresponding lake water pH.4. Experimental variation in phosphorus availability resulted in predictable changes in phosphatase activity. However, specific phosphatase activity, calculated per biomass of phytoplankton, was dependent on plankton species composition.

    Notes: Abstract Purpose. The present investigation was done to study the intestinal absorption of three oxytocin peptide analogues and to elucidate the role of pancreatic juice on their absorption. Methods. In conscious chronically catheterized pigs (6–8 weeks of age) plasma concentration of the peptides, [Mpa1, D-Tyr(Ethyl)2, Thr4, Orn8]-oxytocin (F314), [Mpa1, D-Tyr(Ethyl)2, Val4, D-Arg8]-oxytocin (CAT), and [Mpa1, D-Tyr(Ethyl)2, Thr4, Orn8, desGly9, carba6]-oxytocin (F327) after intraduodenal administration, during presence or diversion of the pancreatic juice via a pancreatic duct catheter, were determined by radioimmunoassay. The stability of the peptides to degradation was determined in vitro by incubation with activated pancreatic juice, chymotrypsin or trypsin, followed by reversed phase HPLC analyses. Results. All peptides were absorbed with a bioavailability of about 0.5% in the presence of pancreatic juice, but increased to 1.0%, 2.1%, and 13.5% for F314, CAT, and F327, respectively, when the pancreatic juice was diverted from the intestine. After incubation with pancreatic juice 95% of F314, 98% of F327, and 100% of CAT was found intact. When incubated with trypsin CAT remained intact while F314 and F327 were degraded by 54% and 46%, respectively. Incubation with purified chymotrypsin did not degrade the test peptides. Conclusions. The results indicate that the increased absorption of peptides observed under conditions of diverted pancreatic juice cannot only be explained by the absence of pancreatic enzymes, but also by changed absorptive properties in the gastrointestinal tract.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1975–1979 wurden Wasseramseln in drei verschiedenen Flüssen im Küstenbereich der Provinz Västerbotten untersucht unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Wanderungen, Ortstreue und Populationsstruktur im Winter. Die Anzahl der Wasseramseln zeigte klare jahreszeitliche Unterschiede mit einem Maximum in den Monaten Dezember und Januar. Die Geschlechter- und Altersverteilungen variierten deutlich während des Winters; ♂ und Altvögel überwogen vor allem am Ende des Winters gegenüber ♀ und Jungvögeln. Die überwinterten Wasseramseln zeigten eine ausgeprägte Ortstreue; ca. 17 % der Vögel kehrten im folgenden Jahre zu den gleichen Flüssen zurück. Zwei Wiederfunde von Wasseramseln, die im Untersuchungsgebiet beringt worden waren, aus Norwegen und eine Kontrolle aus Finnland deuten auf Herkunft und Zugwege der in Nordschweden überwinternden Wasseramseln hin. Diese Wiederfunde stimmen mit den Untersuchungen vonAndersson &Wester (1976) überein. Die Körpergewichte und Flügellängen zeigten gute Übereinstimmung mit Untersuchungen in Südschweden (Andersson &Wester 1971, 1972). Es wird vorgeschlagen, die Populationsstruktur überwinternder Wasseramseln anhand eines Modells der „dominance-influenced migration“ (Gauthreaux 1978) zu erklären.
    Notes: Summary Wintering Dippers were studied in the coastal region of the province Västerbotten in northern Sweden with special emphasis on winter movements, winter site-tenacity and population dynamics. In three different streams the number of wintering Dippers varied markedly during the winter, with maximum numbers in mid-winter (December–January). Sex and age ratio also varied during the winter. ♂ and adult birds outnumbered ♀ and juvenile birds during most of the winter. The wintering Dippers showed a good site-tenacity and about 17 % of the birds returned to the same stream the following season. Two long-distance recoveries and one control of a Dipper banded in Finland might indicate the origin of the wintering Dippers as well as the migratory routes of the species in northern Scandinavia, all in consistence with earlier studies of the migration of the species. Body-weight and wing-length data corresponded well with earlier investigations in southern Scandinavia. It is suggested that the structure of the wintering Dipper population can be explained by a mechanism of dominance-influenced migration proposed byGauthreaux (1978).

    Notes: Abstract Lake Hecklan, in central Sweden, was fertilized with phosphorus and nitrogen during thermal stratification (late May-early Oct) 1984–1987. The nutrient additions were relatively small and raised the total phosphorus concentrations from 6 to 10 µg l−1. The working hypothesis was that this moderate increase in the phosphorus concentration could increase the phytoplankton biomass without adverse changes in the planktonic community structure. The fertilization increased the phytoplankton biomass from 0.1 to a maximum of 2 mm3 l−1. Chrysophyceae and Cryptophyceae dominated throughout the experimental period. Thus, the phytoplankton composition remained typical for a Swedish forest lake and provided a potential for increased zooplankton growth. An increased growth of zooplankton was indicated by increased biomass of Cladocera and Copepoda in 1984 and 1985, and by increased fecundity of herbivorous zooplankton.

    Notes: Abstract The activity of acid phosphatases was followed for one year in Lake Gårdsjön as well as in the inlet and the outlet of the lake. A budget of the phosphatases was calculated, including an estimation of the production of phosphatases. The phosphatase activity was also measured in two basins upstream of L. Gårdsjön: the north basin and the south basin of L. Stora Hästevatten. The acid phosphatase activity was very high compared with reported alkaline phosphatase activities in other lakes. About 95% of the phosphatases in L. Gårdsjön was produced in the lake, and the production was highest in early summer. Small Chrysophyceae (〈 10 µm) probably produced the majority of the acid phosphatases in the investigated lakes, and accordingly could be favoured in environments with low phosphorus supply due to their ability to produce large amounts of phosphatases.

    Notes: Abstract Phosphatases catalyze the liberation of orthophosphate from organic phosphorus compounds. The total phosphatase activity in lake water results from a mixture of phosphatases localized on the cell surfaces of algae and bacteria and from dissolved enzymes supplied by autolysis or excretion from algae, bacteria and zooplankton. External lake water phosphatases usually have pH optima in the alkaline region. Acid phosphatases generally seem to be active in the internal cell metabolism. The synthesis of external alkaline phosphatases is often repressed at high phosphate concentrations and derepressed at low phosphate concentrations. Phosphatase activity has therefore been used as a phosphorus deficiency indicator in algae and in natural plankton populations. The possibilities for this interpretation of phosphatase activity in lake water are limited, however, and this is discussed. The in situ hydrolysis capacity, i.e. the rate by which orthophosphate is released from natural substrates, is unknown. However, we advocate that this process is important and that the rate of substrate supply, rather than phosphatase activity, limits the enzymatic phosphate regeneration.
