Notes: Optical birefringence in liquid-phase-epitaxial-grown (LPE) Bi-substituted iron garnet films was investigated with annealing. The optical birefringence was found to be composed of a stress-induced part and a growth-induced part. The growth-induced optical birefringence Δng was about 5×10−4 at λ=1.15 μm. Δng and the growth-induced magnetic anisotropy Kg disappeared after the annealing. Time constants for changes of Δng and Kg by the annealing were nearly the same and orders of a few hours at 1100–1150 °C. A deformation of the microscopic structure around bismuth ions seems to be responsible for both Δng and Kg. The large growth-induced optical birefringence in Bi-substituted iron garnet films plays an important role to achieve high efficiency TE-TM mode conversion in magneto-optical waveguides.

Notes: TE-TM mode conversion caused by magnetic linear birefringence (MLB) has been studied in liquid-phase-epitaxially grown (BiGdLu)3 (FeGa)5O12 films. The films were grown on Gd3Ga5O12 substrates of which the face normal is tilted from the (111) axis by the angle θc. The LPE growth on the substrate with θc ≠0 made the magnetization of the film tilt from the film normal, and this enabled the mode converter to work without any applied external field. The theory developed to describe the function of the mode converter agreed well with the experimental results. The MLB coefficient is about −9 rad/cm at a wavelength λ=1.15 μm. The Bi substitution is effective to enhance the MLB effect. A role of the MLB mode converter to realize a simple and compact waveguide optical isolator is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The relationship between the development ofCoccinella septempunctata brucki Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and its parasitoid,Perilitus coccinellae (Schrank) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was studied at two photoperiods (L 16:D8 and L 12: D12) at 26°C. The development ofP. coccinellae is well synchronized with the physiological state of the host,C. septempunctata, which can be parasitized not only as adult but also as larva or pupa. The parasitoid larva completed larval development within 19 days in a non-diapausing host, while in diapausing adults as well as in pupae held at diapause-averting conditions, the parasitoid larva ceased growth at the first instar. Growth was resumed when diapause of the host terminated or by the emergence of the adult host from the pupa. About 550 spheric cells, teratocytes, were liberated into the host hemocoel when the parasitoid egg hatched. The teratocytes increased in size in the active host, while their development was arrested in the diapausing host. Application of methoprene caused diapause termination of both host and parasitoid larva. The results indicate that the development of the larva ofP. coccinellae depends on the physiological conditions of the host,C. septempunctata brucki. The host-parasite relation thus represents an ‘endogenous synchronization’ in the sense of Schoonhoven's definition.

Notes: Abstract An 8- to 10-bit CMOS A/D converter with a conversion rate of more than 16 megasample/second is required in consumer video systems. Subranging architecture is widely used to realize such A/D converters. This architecture, however, exhibits a reference voltage error caused by resistor ladder loadings. The error has been discussed with respect to a flash A/D converter by Dingwall. However, it can not be applied for a subranging A/D converter as it is. The analysis of this error is very important in realizing the desired accuracy of a subranging A/D converter. This paper describes a static analysis to improve the linearity, and reports the results of this analysis for two typical types, one with individual comparator arrays for coarse and fine A/D conversions, and the other with the same comparator array for both conversions. This analysis makes it clear that a subranging A/D converter has unique saw-tooth characteristic in fine linearity errors. Furthermore, this analysis clarifies what conditions are necessary to achieve the desired accuracy. It is necessary, for example, that the product of the total input capacitance of the comparators C, the conversion rate f sand the total ladder resistance R is less than 0.03 in A/D converters with individual comparator arrays and 0.016 in A/D converters with the same comparator array in order to achieve 10-bit accuracy.

Notes: Abstract Clarification of factors enabling diapause termination was carried out in a stem borer, Busseola fusca. Diapausing larvae very rarely pupated under dry conditions. Water apparently played a significant role in the termination of late diapause. During the late diapause period, larvae in the field were exposed to rains of the short rainy season. This precipitation, however, terminated diapause in only a few larvae, which indicate that termination requires sustained exposure to wet conditions that are not usually met during the short rains.

Notes: Abstract Previous studies revealed that diapause larvae of Busseola fusca (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) began to respond to water and pupated in artificial wet conditions only in late diapause. Experiments are designed to clarify how water is involved in the termination of larval diapause. Neither feeding the larvae on fresh sorghum stems (6 weeks old) nor allowing them to drink water stimulated a break in the larval diapause. Diapause larvae transferred to artificial wet conditions pupated without increase in fresh weight. It is thus concluded that water contact is more significant as a factor terminating diapause in B. fusca than water uptake.

Notes: Summary The thoracic aorta and basilar artery, in which the incidence of atherosclerosis is known to be different, were examined to elucidate the correlation between the structure of the intercellular cleft junction between adjacent endothelial cells and its permeability to HRP. Tannic acid or HRP in the vessel lumen passed through the intercellular clefts of the thoracic aorta into the subendothelial space, whereas in the basilar artery they were unable to penetrate beyond the tight junction of the intercellular clefts. Freeze-fracture replicas revealed that the tight junctions of the thoracic aorta consisted of one to two junctional strands in most areas of the cleaved planes, with discontinuities in some places, whereas those of the basilar artery consisted of a continuous belt-like meshwork of six anastomosing junctional strands on average. These observations confirm that the structure of endothelial junctions in arteries has a close correlation with the permeability of the intercellular clefts to HRP.
