    Notizen: Precocious centromere division at metaphase I leading to diploid gamete formation has been observed in three cultivars. Some of the PMC's are characterized only by rod bivalents whose centromeres split at metaphase I. After passing to respective poles, the already divided centromeres fall apart at telophase I, with the result that each pole has unreduced number of 34 chromosomes. There is no second division and such cells form dyads which give rise to diploid pollen grains. Such unreduced pollen are 100 per cent fertile because of reduced (or no) recombination between hamoeolugous genomes and the presence of two sets of chromosomes. Thus, triploids or even tetraploids can arise when such pollen grains are involved in tertilization with reduced or unreduced egg of other cultivars.

    Notizen: Abstract Total seed storage protein of 9 accessions of cultivated C. cajan and 10 wild Cajanus species was reported and compared by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A considerable variation was detected among the protein profiles of different accessions of C. cajan while those of wild species were very specific and distinctly different from each other. Relative similarities between various taxa were estimated by Jaccard's similarity index and cluster analysis was performed to produce a UPGMA dendrogram. The clustering of 10 wild species and C. cajan more or less agrees with their sectional classification and available data based on morphological characteristics, crossability, genome pairing in hybrids and nuclear RFLPs. The species closest to C. cajan is C. cajanifolia although the accessions of C. cajan also share some bands present in the profiles of C. scarabaeoides, C. goensis, C. lineatus, C. acutifolius and C. volubilis. This points towards polyphyletic origin of the cultigen which has been discussed in this paper.

    Notizen: Abstract Total seed storage proteins of five species of Celosia (14 taxa) have been compared by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Relative similarities between the taxa were estimated by Jaccard's similarity index and cluster analysis was performed to produce a UPGMA dendrogram which divides 14 taxa into two groups while C. trigyna holds an isolated position. One group includes 4x C. cristata and C. plumosa, wild 8x C. argentea and 12x C. whitei and the other separates four accessions of 4x C. argentea. This raises a doubt regarding 4x types of C. argentea being the direct progenitors of the cultivated types.

    Notizen: Abstract Chromosome complements and 2C DNA amounts of six species ofTerminalia have been studied.Terminalia oliveri, T. myriocarpa andT. arjuna are diploid (2n = 24),T. chebula andT. bellirica are tetraploid (2n = 48),T. muelleri shows a triploid number (2n = 36). Two well demarcated groups of species are recognizable on the basis of chromosome length and 2C DNA values which range from 3.60 pg (T. oliveri) to 12.80 pg (T. bellirica) showing a 3.5-fold difference. Differences of DNA per basic genome or per chromosome are greatest (1.97-fold) betweenT. oliveri andT. arjuna. Two species groups (1)T. oliveri andT. chebula, and (2)T. myriocarpa, T. arjuna, T. muelleri, T. bellirica, therefore are well differentiated by DNA per basic genome, irrespective of polyploidy. The mean values of the two groups are 1.81 pg and 3.34 pg, respectively, showing a 1.84-fold difference. Within diploids and tetraploids there is 1.97-fold and 1.76-fold variation, respectively.

The diploidC. trigyna has twice as much DNA/basic genome as other taxa, which is commensurate with its taxonomic position and genetic isolation. There is insignificant variation in DNA/basic genome among 4x, 8x, and 12x taxa. Therefore, DNA/nucleus shows a strong positive correlation with ploidy level. The different accessions of 4x taxa show constancy of DNA amounts. There is no correlation of seed weight with DNA amount.

The evolution of genome size has been discussed in relation to polyploidy and genomes, heterochromatin, adaptive changes in morphological characteristics, phenology and ecological factors, and infrageneric classification.
