Notes: Measurements have been made of amplitudes of reflected seismic waves, in order to investigate their change as a function of the shotpoint-seismometer distance and of the position of the reflection point. The change with shotpoint-seismometer distance, after correction for geometrical divergence, was usually small. This indicates either a rather strong difference between the values of Poisson's ratio for adjacent strata, or, more likely, a rather small value of the absorption coefficient. In one instance a very strong increase in amplitude with shotpoint-seismometer distance was observed. This may be attributed to incidence near the critical angle. In another instance a pronounced increase in amplitude with the position of the reflection point was observed over a very short distance. This may be due to an elongated depression of the reflecting boundary.

Notes: Using a resonance method, determinations have been made of the longitudinal bar velocity and of Poisson's ratio of thirteen different chemically pure limestones. The relation between the velocity and the density showed far less scatter than in the determinations previously published; this is primarily attributed to the high purity of the specimens used. The measurements further showed a tendency of the values of Poisson's ratio to increase with increasing density.

Notes: The Cagniard method of interpreting geoelectrical sounding data is based on the use of an empirical graph which expresses the relation between the resistivity and thickness of the second subsurface layer on one side, and on the other side the replacement resistivity and replacement thickness which are derived from the two-layer sounding curve which is asymptotic to the second branch of the observed sounding curve. In his method separate graphs of this type are required for different values of the resistivity of the third subsurface layer. In the present paper a generalized Cagniard graph is derived which has the advantage of being independent of the value of the resistivity of the third subsurface layer. Finally, the accuracy of the method is discussed, and a procedure is described for extending its use to cases where more than three subsurface layers intervene.

Notes: A method is described for computing master resistivity curves. It is a modification of that devised by Ehrenburg and Watson, but is superior as a shorter time is required for the computations. A collection of 31 master curves for the three layer case is presented.

Notes: An analysis is made of the propagation of the measuring error in the different stages of the interpretation by the linear filter and reducing method. This analysis leads to an understanding of the range of possible values of the layer parameters and of the nature of the relation between them.It is shown that this relation is not always adequately described by the equivalence expressions of Maillet.

Notes: Several papers have been published in which the electromagnetic anomalies are described that are produced by conductive ore bodies of different shapes. No publications are available, however, in which the electrical current pattern is described that is induced in these ore bodies. Yet an insight in this electrical current pattern would be valuable in order to assess the possibilities of different electromagnetic techniques, for instance with regard to the determination of the dip and of the depth extent of plate shaped ore bodies. In the present paper computations are given of the electrical current pattern induced by an oscillating magnetic dipole in a semi infinite plate shaped orebody of infinitesimal thickness, in which the penetration depth of the current is infinitesimal to a higher order than the thickness of the plate. The computations are based upon an equation derived by Wesley for the magnetic field produced in these conditions, combined with the relation between the electrical current density in a laminar sheet and the magnetic field produced by this current at the surface of the sheet. The results of the computations show that, if the horizontal distance between the dipole source and the sheet is sufficiently small, the maximum current density of the return current may occur at a depth below the upper edge of the sheet which is appreciably smaller than the depth of the upper edge of the sheet below the surface. The depth of the return current becomes large when the horizontal distance between the source and the sheet is large.

Notes: A system of geophysical units is proposed which is based on the International System of Units, using the meter, the kilogram, the second and the ampere as fundamental units. A historical introduction is given and the reasons for preferring the use of the International System of Units in exploration geophysics, are explained. At the meeting of the European Association of Exploration Geophysicists at Stockholm a resolution will be proposed recommending the use in exploration geophysics of the International System of Units.

Notes: In the linear filter method of interpreting resistivity sounding data, as developed by Ghosh (1971), it appears that the filter function in the x-domain approaches an oscillating function for both large positive and large negative abscissa values. In the present note the reason for this oscillating behaviour is derived, and a possible practical application is indicated.

Notes: The computation method described in this paper is based on the existence of a linear relationship between the mutual coupling ratio and the kernel function in the integral expression for it. Accordingly, the mutual coupling ratio can be determined by first computing sample values of the kernel function and then subjecting these to a digital linear filter. In the present paper the appropriate sampling distance is determined and the values of the digital filter coefficients are computed, both for electromagnetic sounding with horizontal coils and for electromagnetic sounding with perpendicular coils.
