    Description: Within the Venusian magnetosheath, Venus Express has observed the existence of high-amplitude, nonlinear waves which have been interpreted as large-scale nonlinear rotational structures within the magnetic field. A number of mechanisms have been proposed that can be used to explain their origin. Venus Express data have been searched for other examples of the similar structures. It appears that such structures are quite rare, being observed during only 8 of the dayside magnetosheath crossings among 676 that took place between April 2006 and February 2008. All together, only 50 such waves have been identified during these 8 crossings. The properties of these structures were studied. After considering a number of possible generation mechanisms, it is concluded that the most probable generation mechanism is the Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability; however, other mechanisms such as shock-related processes cannot be completely discounted.

    Description: Using the plasma and the magnetic field data measured by the ASPERA-4 (Analyzer of Space Plasma and Energetic Atoms) and the magnetometer (MAG) onboard Venus Express between June 2006 and December 2008, positions of high energy O+ fluxes (〉100 eV) near the Venus terminator are examined for two different interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) configurations: IMF nearly perpendicular to the Venus-Sun line (perpendicular IMF case) and IMF nearly parallel to it (parallel IMF case). In most of the perpendicular IMF case, the high energy O+ fluxes are observed only near the magnetic poles. In contrast, they are observed regardless of a convection electric field around the terminator in most of the parallel IMF case. Energy of the flux depends on the convection electric field direction in the former case. In contrast, it has no dependence on the field direction in the latter case. We attribute these results to more complicated draping pattern of IMF around the ionosphere in the parallel IMF case than for that of the perpendicular IMF case. In the perpendicular IMF case, the IMF drapes around the ionosphere, forming a single plasma sheet. In contrast, in the parallel IMF case, the IMF drapes complicatedly, creating many antiparallel configuration of local magnetic field. Such multiple antiparallel configuration results in a local acceleration of O+ and more outflow channels. Thus, the ion acceleration region and its mechanism can be essentially different between the perpendicular IMF case and the parallel IMF case.

    Description: Epigenetic proteins are intently pursued targets in ligand discovery. So far, successful efforts have been limited to chromatin modifying enzymes, or so-called epigenetic 'writers' and 'erasers'. Potent inhibitors of histone binding modules have not yet been described. Here we report a cell-permeable small molecule (JQ1) that binds competitively to acetyl-lysine recognition motifs, or bromodomains. High potency and specificity towards a subset of human bromodomains is explained by co-crystal structures with bromodomain and extra-terminal (BET) family member BRD4, revealing excellent shape complementarity with the acetyl-lysine binding cavity. Recurrent translocation of BRD4 is observed in a genetically-defined, incurable subtype of human squamous carcinoma. Competitive binding by JQ1 displaces the BRD4 fusion oncoprotein from chromatin, prompting squamous differentiation and specific antiproliferative effects in BRD4-dependent cell lines and patient-derived xenograft models.     Description: [1]  The interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) embedded in the solar wind interacts with the Martian crustal magnetic field and atmosphere. The IMF orientation is one of important parameters to control the acceleration and precipitation of planetary heavy ions (PHIs). We statistically investigate effects of the IMF orientation on PHI precipitations toward the ionosphere based on observations by Mars Express (MEX). We identified 59 PHI precipitation events between July 2007 and September 2009. To estimatethe IMF orientation without magnetometer that MEX does not carry, we used the velocity distribution of exospheric-origin pickup protons. We estimated the IMF orientation without its polarity for 10 events. The results show that the precipitations of PHIstend to be observed around pole regions in the MSE (Mars-centered, solar electrical) coordinates determined from the solar wind electric field ( E sw ), in which the pole axis directs to the parallel or anti-parallel to E sw due to the ambiguity in the IMF polarity determination. The observed precipitating PHIs are accelerated only up to a few keV. This feature may reflect the short distance from the picked-up region.For one of these 10 events, we estimated the IMF polarity by comparing the velocity distribution of exospheric-origin pickup protons observed by MEX with those obtained from statistical trajectory tracing simulations under two cases of possible IMF polarity conditions. The estimated polarity indicates that the PHI precipitation in this event is observed in the downward electric field hemisphere in MSE, where E sw points to Mars in the pole region.

    Notes: Abstract Polarization measurements in the A(p, 2p)B reactions on 6Li, 7Li, and 28Si nuclei at a proton-beam energy of 1 GeV were performed in a kinematically complete experiment. By using a two-arm magnetic spectrometer, two secondary protons were recorded in coincidence at asymmetric scattering angles of θ1=15°−26° and θ2=58.6° for residual-nucleus momenta in the range K B=0–150 MeV/c. Either arm of the spectrometer was equipped with polarimeters based on proportional chambers. The data coming from this experiment are analyzed within the distorted-wave impulse approximation. It is shown that the polarization of recoil protons formed at angle θ2 in the interaction featuring a proton from the P shell of the 7Li nucleus can be described under the assumption of an effective intranuclear-proton polarization by using the single-particle shell-model wave function of the nucleus. Our data on the polarizations of the two protons from the reaction (p, 2p) on a 28Si nucleus also suggest the effective polarization of the protons in the D shell of the 28Si nucleus. It is found that, for high recoil-nucleus momenta of K B≥90 MeV/c, the effective polarization of the protons in the P shell of the 6Li nucleus—this polarization was discovered in studying the polarization of recoil protons in the reaction 6Li(p, 2p)5He—cannot be described within the shell model assuming LS coupling. As might have been expected, the polarization of recoil protons knocked out from the S shells of the 6Li and 7Li nuclei comply well with the predictions obtained in the impulse approximation with allowance for the depolarization effect alone.

The repeated operations involved in making very thin-walled tubes for bellows very adversely affect the mechanical parameters of 08Kh18N10T steel under static and cyclic loads. 2. The mechanical properties are adversely affected on account of the production of microscopic flaws and scratches, and also by grain growth. 3. The working life of bellows made of 08Kh18N10T steel may be improved if the number of cycles involved in making the thin-walled tube can be reduced. Welded tubes provide bellows of considerably increased working life.
