Description / Table of Contents:
Studied on the Geometry of Acceptor Ligands in the MLCT Excited StateMLCT excitation of d6 transition metal complexes with N acceptor ligands leads to a significant radial charge distribution between metal and ligand. Thus, the MLCT excited state can be considered formally as an oxidized metal center coordinated to a radical ion. Using quantum-chemical NDDO method including geometry optimization, the geometrical distortions of aromatic N-heterocycles pyridine, pyrazine, 2,2′-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline upon addition of an electron into the lowest π* MO are investigated in order to estimate the structural properties of these acceptor ligands in the MLCT excited state. The geometrical distortion going from neutral molecule to the monoanion is discussed in detail and comparisons with experimental data are made. Identical trends of bond alteration obtained by our calculations and of structural data of metal complexes with an effective π back-bonding suggest alternative mechanisms of charge transfer.
Notes:
